Are there any names you love but you wouldn't use as dislike the nn?

There are several names I think are lovely but wouldn't use them as I don't like the nicknames associated with that name. Samantha (Sammy), Nicholas (Nick) and Natalie (Nat) to name a few for me.

I am the opposite with some names though. Love Seb not so keen on Sebastian, I like Alex but only so so on Alexander and prefer has to Jasmine.

tammytoby · 19/03/2014 22:39

William is nice but hate Willy
Sebastian is nice but hate Seb/Basty
Patrick is nice but hate Pat

JanePurdy · 19/03/2014 23:01

I like Tamsin but hate Tammy or worse Tammi.

On the other hand I hate Octavia but like Tavi.

Dovahkiin · 19/03/2014 23:25

Love Eleanor, hate Ellie.

Dovahkiin · 19/03/2014 23:26

And all 3000 nicknames for Elizabeth, which is a real fricking shame because I love Elizabeth.

MairzyDoats · 19/03/2014 23:28

Gabrielle or Gabriella = beautiful, Gabby = definitely not.

superlambanana · 19/03/2014 23:36

Isabelle / Isobel. Can't stand Izzy.

hollyisalovelyname · 19/03/2014 23:37

I like David but hate Dave.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 19/03/2014 23:40

I gave my dd a nickname I love (M e g) but dislike the two longer versions. Apparently she will never be a High Court Judge but hey ho Grin

I love Matilda but Tilly makes me gag. Love Tilda though.

Love Dominic but dislike Dom. Dom dom.doooommmmmm.

LargeBustedMamma · 19/03/2014 23:57

Loved Alana for my DD, disliked Ali/Allie which I guarantee it would get shortened too.
On the other hand I can't stand the name Georgina yet love Georgie. Each to our own I suppose,

5madthings · 20/03/2014 00:03

Our dd was nearly Genevieve but we both hate the nickname gen/Jen or Jenny. We would have used vi vi but I knew at school she would end up Jen.

Plus an annoying relative declared she would always pronounce it the French way, complete with faux accent... That would have driven me insane!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 20/03/2014 00:05

Nearly used Juliet for DD but hate Jules so she has it as a middle name instead. On the other hand I hate Margaret so her first name is just Maggie

5madthings · 20/03/2014 00:06

Oh and ds3 was almost Isaac but same relative insisted she would call him zac... And went on about how she hated Isaac as it is a biblical name... I did point out that zac/Zachary is also a biblical name..

ToffeeJungle · 20/03/2014 08:33

Love Joseph, dislike Joe/Joey
Love Dominic, dislike Dom

Love Matilda, dislike Tilly
Love Francesca, dislike Frankie

Wishfulmakeupping · 20/03/2014 08:39

Love Victoria dislike 'Vicky'
I love Elizabeth but was really worried about using it for dd in case of Liz/Lizzy or Beth. Betsy was the only nn I didn't mind- we used it as a middle name.

Wishfulmakeupping · 20/03/2014 08:40

Oh and Vivienne can't imagine a baby Viv

noodlebum · 20/03/2014 11:05

largebustedmamma - I know an Alannah and she's never been called Allie! Lana sometimes, but that's it.

TheBookofRuth · 20/03/2014 11:11

I like Anthony but dislike Tony, and I like Zachary/Zachariah but not Zach.

TheRaniOfYawn · 20/03/2014 11:11

The obvious shortening for DD's name is Tammy, but the only person who calls her that is her little brother. Her friends all call her by her full name and the family nicknames are Tass or Tansy.

Ludways · 20/03/2014 11:13

Love Matthew and Matt, loathe Matty

5things, I have a French Canadian friend called Genevieve, it's beautiful in French I always think it sounds wrong in English, lol. She usually goes happily by both her full name and Gene (pronounced Jean) which is lovely.

Amandine29 · 20/03/2014 11:17

LePetitPont · 20/03/2014 12:00

Toby but not Tobias

Alex but not Alexandra

Innogen · 20/03/2014 12:01

Victoria I love, Vicky is horrific.

Lulabellarama · 20/03/2014 12:04

Love Charlotte, hate Charlie or Lottie
Love Victoria, hate Vicky

dilys4trevor · 20/03/2014 12:07

As a Natalie, I can tell you that 'Nat' is widely used and no-one really says the full name. Even worse, some people insist on 'Nats.' I am 39 and it still grinds my gears.

I agree utterly on David - it's beautiful and strong but you cannot risk 'Dave.'

I think we are nearly decided on Agatha for our third (based on my love of the Belgian detective and the spinster from St Mary Mead) but I have to say I don't like Aggy AT ALL. I may insist her nn (if people insist on shortening) is Taggie, a la Taggie Campbell Black!
