There are several names I think are lovely but wouldn't use them as I don't like the nicknames associated with that name. Samantha (Sammy), Nicholas (Nick) and Natalie (Nat) to name a few for me.

I am the opposite with some names though. Love Seb not so keen on Sebastian, I like Alex but only so so on Alexander and prefer has to Jasmine.

Nicholas-I just don't like "Nick" or "Nicky."

I like Henry but always think "Harry" is an adjective and not a name.

LePetitPont · 20/03/2014 16:06

dilys4trevor I too want an Agatha so i can use Taggie of Jilly Cooper fame! Although with mine and my husband's somewhat stumpy genes, she would never have the log legs of an Irish wolfhound...

I really like Elinor but not Ellie.

Stateofgrace · 20/03/2014 16:32

Madeleine - Maddy
Victoria - Vicky
Rebecca - Becks or Becky
Olivia - Liv
Virginie - Ginny
Isobel - Izzy (however this could be combatted by 'Ibby')
Beatrix - Trixie ('Bix'?)

On the flip side..

Love Kitty but not keen on K/Catherine

OnABabyDiet · 20/03/2014 19:44

Funny lots of people are saying they love Victoria but hate Vicky. We have a 10 month old Victoria and this was our one reservation with using this name. However, it would never occur to us to call her Vicky. She is absolutely Victoria or sometimes Toria (as this is what her 3 year old cousin calls her). My sister's friend is a 40 year old Victoria and she has never been called Vicky in her life. She is also Victoria.

So I am still hoping our Victoria won't get Vicky!

But anyway..I digress. Names I like but don't like nicknames - love William but don't like Bill. Like Juliet but don't like Jules.

Love Charlotte but hate Lottie or Charlie. I hate all cutesy nicknames though. Like Isabelle but can't stand Bella. It goes right through me!

Mintymoomoo · 21/03/2014 09:32

Love Jennifer and Francesca but hate Jen/Jenny/Fran/Frankie

AmysTiara · 21/03/2014 11:25

Gabrielle and Gabriella. Gorgeous names but I hate Gabby or Gabs.

Isabel but I dislike Izzy and Belle.

myitchybeaver · 21/03/2014 11:43

I would have named one of my DC Oliver a lovely strong handsome name. If it wasn't for the drippy Olly/Ollie...

Stokey · 21/03/2014 14:57

Minty I know a Francesca called Chessie which is far nice IMO than Frankie etc

And for Victoria, I know a Tory, Tordy & Tic, all bettet than Vicky

Agree with Tamsin, loved it but didn't call DD2 it as didn't want it shortened to Tammy.

I also liked Miranda but couldn't get on with Mimi, Miri, or god forbid Randy as nicknames

And Melissa, y - Mel no.

WrongendoftheSTIX · 21/03/2014 20:50

Felicity. I hate the nickname 'Flick'

Innogen · 21/03/2014 22:26

As a Felicity, I hate Flick too. No one ever called me it though. I'm Fliss :)

Innogen · 21/03/2014 22:32

Sorry, too soon.

Fliss, or Fifi when I was younger.

Completely forgot about Tory for Victoria. Makes me more inclined to use it now.

Obviously if you hate all the nicknames it ruins a name, but it is very possible to manipulate nicknames away from one, towards an alternative, if needed. My parents did.

So don't rule a name like William out if you like Will, but hate Bill. Chances are that you can bend it your way. And by the time the child is old enough to chose a different nickname for themselves (some don't, I never did) it's not really your choice anymore what your child is referred to.
