Everyone hates the name we love!

We have DD2 due in 3 months and after many veto's and arguments between DH and I we decided on a name we both love. Only problem is everyone else we told instantly hates it and says DD will be bullied because it's a boys name .

Dh is dutch and the name is in the top 20 over there, unusual here though I guess. The name is Noa by the way.

I think it's a gorgeous name. Really pretty. Take no notice of what others say. It often helps to keep any names you like to yourselves until baby is born. People tend to be more sensitive when baby is actually present and named. Well I hope so!!

Don't discuss it with anyone prior to her birth. Just introduce her as Noa when she is born (clearly this is a bit late now, but if you are set on it, don't get into any discussions about it before she's here.)

People seem to accept it much more readily if an actual baby is presented with the name in place (rather than a pregnancy which has a hypothetical name)

If you love it, who cares?! You're the ones who will say it the most.

This is exactly why you don't tell anyone the name until you're introducing your baby.

It's a beautiful name! Noah with the 'h' is a boy's name yes, but not Noa.

Congratulations. Within a very short time indeed, people will only think of your beautiful DD when they hear the name, nothing else.

Thank you for the reassurance, I did think it was maybe a bit too out there the way my mother was carrying on.

Well said Bowlersarm I think too many people are put off names by interfering relatives.

If you just say that this is whatevernameyouchoose then there's nothing they can say about it to influence you

The worst thing you can do is tell people what you are planning on naming your child as you either get "the face" or silence! The only thing that matters is if you and your DH love the name, it's no-one else's business. FWIW I think Noa is gorgeous! Unusual without being too out- there.

I think it's very pretty. Listen, it's YOUR baby and it doesn't matter what anyone thinks!! I don't think she will get bullied at all. Kids will be growing up with her and it won't be odd to them. Some men are called Beverley and Shirley!!! Honestly, go for it, it's lovely x

No disrespect to your mum or anyone else but they had there time naming babies and as long as you and your hd love it then go for it, the rest will get used to it in the end and if they don't that's their problem

I knew a Noah and he hated his name because he thought it sounded too feminine! (I loved it, though.) I think you'll be fine.

Noa is welsh for Noah. I have two Noa's in my class. Lovely name for a boy.

For me it's a boys name because I have a Noah. It is getting more & more popular in the uk as a boys name & I think your dd may come across a few comments but there are girls called Charlie etc so don't think it will be a huge deal. There was a Noa thread on here recently - I suggested Nea as an alternative

It's a lovely girl's name. Don't discuss names with anybody, just introduce your daughter ad Noa when she is born!

My Mum and Sister hated the names I suggested for DC4. I still used them and they have both said it's grown on them.

I prefer to know peoples true feelings about the names I like. BIL and Wife wouldn't discuss names and everyone in the family talks behind their backs about their Baby's name even now 6 months on. Beautiful baby but terrible name!

It is a nice name and you should go for it as long as you're fully prepared for her you (and her) to encounter lots of 'but that's a boys name!^ as 99% of people in the UK who have a name that sounds identical to that are male.

Perhaps they're only saying that to be polite?

How do you know your Mum really likes your child's name and isn't just being polite? Much like I assume you are to your BIL and their child's 'terrible' name.
