Everyone hates the name we love!

We have DD2 due in 3 months and after many veto's and arguments between DH and I we decided on a name we both love. Only problem is everyone else we told instantly hates it and says DD will be bullied because it's a boys name Hmm.

Dh is dutch and the name is in the top 20 over there, unusual here though I guess. The name is Noa by the way.

My DH has a very dutch surname, no one can spell or pronounce it Grin. So I liked the idea of very English or simple first names, DD1 is Faith and I initially wanted Freya for DD2 but DH loaths it. Noa is the only name we agreed we both love so im sticking with it now.

I do wish id have kept my mouth shut when telling people but im not going to change my mind now.

Thank you so much for your opinions, it has made me feel much better

Ah :) My DH has an easy surname which is rare! It doesn't matter what others think if you like it you stick with it. And it's so pretty as a name.

RufusTheReindeer · 12/01/2014 19:43

Beautiful name

My mum hated ds1s name before he was born

Then when he was born she said "he does look like a RufusTheReindeer"

traininthedistance · 13/01/2014 00:41

I know two Noas - it's very popular in Israel. Lovely, unusual and very pretty!

sorry I'm being thick, how does one pronounce the Dutch Noa that OP wants?

PhantomMenace · 13/01/2014 10:58

DH says you would pronounce it the same as Noah

Noa is a lovely name and very popular here in Spain.

A friend (who also lives in Spain) wanted to call her little boy Noah initially but was warned against it by all of their friends and family because here it would be like calling your boy Olivia or Eva. Her Spanish DH also said no way because it would be cruel. They did decide on another name and now she is very glad she didn't go with Noah.

I imagine the same situation for a girl called Noa in the UK where Noah is so popular at the moment. Shame though because it is very pretty.

skydivermcfly · 13/01/2014 11:36

Yes it is pn exactly the same as Noah.

flatmum · 13/01/2014 11:39

I think that's a lovely name and makes perfect sense if she is half-Dutch.

I would assume boy until I knew but, so what?

What about Noelie if want something more obviously female for the UK market?

But tbh, nowadays, I think what does it matter? My dc go to school with 2 Tates - one girl, one boy. I have a Dylan who has an American friend called Dillan who is a girl. Who cares? They certainly don't - I think it will be normal for their generation anyway.

roobywooby · 13/01/2014 11:40

I love it for a girl - much prefer it actually to the boy name.

What does it matter?

Jamie/Jaime
Chris/Chris(tine)
Alex/Alex(andra)

why do you have to be able to tell the gender from hearing the name?

Noa is on our list, seen as a strong biblical woman (numbers 27). We love that. Top name in Israel and popular in Spain too

MoominsYonisAreScary · 15/01/2014 14:40

I like it, does it really matter if people think its a boys name. Obviously they will see shes a girl.

Ive known a few Dales, Ashley, Coutney, Dylans etc both male and female

Juliealpha · 15/01/2014 14:57

My 15 year old is called Christian. A boy, but i went to school with a girl called Christian. It made no difference. They grow into their names

MsGee · 15/01/2014 15:01

Everyone hated DD name and nickname when she was born. PIL refused to use the nickname for months and stumbled over the name to make a point.

Name now universally loved and we are often complimented in it.

DD name v similar too BTW (just add one letter..)

lilyaldrin · 15/01/2014 15:05

Who cares if you can't immediately tell someone's gender from their name? What an odd thing to get worked up about.

Doesn't seem to have done Cameron Diaz any harm anyway!

lilyaldrin · 15/01/2014 15:07

I've never heard anyone say "oh my god, you can't call a girl Frances! What if people think she's a boy called Francis!". The horror Grin

shoom · 15/01/2014 15:08

I know a Noa. Yes the first time I heard it, I wondered if I'd misheard "Nora" but haven't thought any more about it. Go for it!

RedToothBrush · 15/01/2014 15:17

You are bang on trend!

Apparently its becoming the thing for celebrity couples to give their daughters 'male' names.

I wouldn't worry about it. Its likely to become more common anyway.

leolion · 15/01/2014 15:20

Go with what you like. You'll never find a name that everybody likes, it's so subjective. For what it's worth, I love the name.

Melanienm · 15/01/2014 15:23

I think Noa is a lovely name!
