Everyone hates the name we love!

We have DD2 due in 3 months and after many veto's and arguments between DH and I we decided on a name we both love. Only problem is everyone else we told instantly hates it and says DD will be bullied because it's a boys name Hmm.

Dh is dutch and the name is in the top 20 over there, unusual here though I guess. The name is Noa by the way.

Ha! x-post

SanityClause · 11/01/2014 23:20

Sorry, I didn't answer the OP.

I agree with PP. Never discuss names with anyone other than the co parent, until the baby is born. Only really rude people would make any comment about the name when introduced to a small person who smells of vanilla.

And I like Noa. If you, and later, she, get comments about it being a boy's name, it's easy to retort, "no, it's Dutch". Job done.

sydenhamhiller · 11/01/2014 23:23

Close family have not liked 2 of my 3 DC's names... But after initial purses mouths, they get used to it!

zipzap · 11/01/2014 23:38

I love Noa but wouldn't ever use it - only because I have a boy Noah Grin

I do have lots of welsh relatives who reckon on Noa being a Welsh girls name - to the point that one elderly welsh relative sent me a beautiful set of baby towel and bits and bobs - all in beautiful shades of pink - and a Congratulations on your baby girl card Grin

JumpingJackSprat · 12/01/2014 09:54

Noah is very feminine sounding anyway and always struck me as more of a girls name. Noa is much better than Nia which is one letter away but for some reason is perfectly ok whereas Noa is not. I like it anyway I would go for it. The number of names in the world is far wider than the limited opinions you will get here and imo is better to stand out. Never did Cameron Diaz or drew barrymore any harm!

Trizelda · 12/01/2014 10:01

Miley Cyrus's sister is called Noah.

DessieLou · 12/01/2014 10:11

I used to know a little Noa, she was adorable! It's a really sweet name, go for it. We get funny faces from people when we introduce dd and I couldn't care less. Her name is not at all unusual but has (for some) a negative connection so whatever you name dd people will have an opinion.

notso · 12/01/2014 10:24

I trust them that's how.
They didn't suddenly say as soon as he was born they liked the name.
DSIS kept asking me if I was sure and saying he looked more like our second choice of name.
My Mum just called him the Baby for ages but after a while said he'd made the name his own.
DSIS is expecting her first soon and names have been discussed between us she said she thought DS's name was "a horrible old mans name" for ages but now when she hears it she thinks of lovely DS3. Her DH thinks his parents will hate their name choice and she has used DS3's name as an example to persuade him as they have changed their minds on it.
Obviously once a baby is born it is hard to say what you really think. DH and I have never mentioned DN's name to BIL and his wife. I wouldn't say I think it's awful but I wouldn't lie to them and say I love it either. It's double barrelled, one name is spelt and pronounced wrong and it sounds made up. If they mentioned it when SIL was still pg I would have said what I thought.

notso · 12/01/2014 10:25

That ^ was to Sanity and Squoosh

MissFenella · 12/01/2014 10:29

Noa is a girls name according to wiki with beautiful meanings en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noa_(name)

I like it - name your daughter whatever you want

livingzuid · 12/01/2014 10:43

Noa is a gorgeous name. My DH is also Dutch and we (think) we are having a boy and I really want a Dutch name but he wants an English name! We live in NL and his mother is English speaking and he has an English name that no one can ever pronounce so why he wants our child to go through that I don't know Confused we are currently arguing about it Grin

I think it adds to the unique - when your daughter explains it she can very proudly say her father is half Dutch and that is why she has such a beautiful name. I think it is lovely to reflect that side of her heritage.

livingzuid · 12/01/2014 10:47

By the way to give her a Dutch name when her dad is Dutch makes perfect sense. I have a French name and neither my mum or dad can even manage a 'bonjour' and it is highly frustrating to always answer why do I have a French name, no I am British, no I don't know why they chose it blah blah! Your dd won't have to go through that!

lljkk · 12/01/2014 10:57

I wouldn't use it, sorry. Not worried about bullying just wouldn't choose for my child the recurring hassle about spelling & gender confusion. there are other many nice Dutch names (I work with loads of Dutch people).

volvocowgirl · 12/01/2014 11:05

I think it's a very pretty name Smile

CarryOnDancing · 12/01/2014 11:07

I think it's a beautiful name!
Just carry a box of the Noa perfume around with you and spray it at anyone who offers you a funny expression!!

livingzuid · 12/01/2014 11:23

She might want to live here as an adult. You might decide to move back. In which case she would have no problems with her name whatsoever. The Dutch are a bit more laid back about these things anyway. Let us know how you get on :)

Writerwannabe83 · 12/01/2014 11:58

The only people who know what me and DH are likely to call our baby belong to MN [smile

Everyone in real life keeps asking about names but we have told them we haven't decided and even when we do they will be told after the birth Smile

FWIW Op - I think Noa is lovely Smile

DaleyBump · 12/01/2014 12:01

Noa is lovely.

I have a boys name. I'm called Dale and although I was bullied throughout school, it was never because I had a boys name. Just use it :)

NakedTigarCub · 12/01/2014 15:54

If you like it use it.

If you want an alternative Nola.

Dont.tell people the name and accept some people will not like whatever you pick. Your baby you get to pick the name

Congrats xx

MrsT2007 · 12/01/2014 16:30

It's lovely! Balls to everyone else, your parents have had their child naming. Now it's your turn & choice!

My mum wasn't sure about DD name when I mentioned it whilst pregnant. But when Lois arrived, it was the one name on our short list that really suited her. Mum has never mentioned it.....

BEEwitched · 12/01/2014 16:42

Noa is lovely and I knew it was a girl's name - I would stick to it and ignore others.

ImpOfDarkness · 12/01/2014 17:59

It's a girl's name in Hebrew so I'd presume you were Jewish.

Frikadellen · 12/01/2014 18:13

My mother said "thats HORRIBLE" when we named ds Conrad. FFW 11 1/2 years to this September where she said " I have always liked the name Conrad its such a good solid strong name"

yeah right.

Frikadellen · 12/01/2014 18:14

BTW Noa is beautiful

Rhubarbgarden · 12/01/2014 18:33

I much prefer Noa for a girl to Noah for a boy. How about Noor as an alternative? I absolutely love Noor, but DH's cousin nabbed it before we could use it.
