I really like the name Polly. I think it is quirkier than Holly, Molly, Millie, Tilly etc but would like to know if that is the general consensus.

As for all the nursery rhymes associations I think it is cute, PJ Harvey sells it for me as does the Nirvana song though I know it's inspiration is sad )

Thanks x

Polly is traditionally a nn for Mary (so is Molly).
I keep thinking "..wants a cracker". Sorry.

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 16:42

Oh Ditsy, don't use the Nirvana song as inspiration for Polly as a name lol, don't think that's how that song was intended xxx

I do like it though x

GColdtimer · 29/12/2013 16:43

I have one. She is 3 and really suits her name because she is quite quirky:). Never met another one and everyone we meet seems to like it. Never get "wants a cracker" - gear us that about??

GColdtimer · 29/12/2013 16:44

I also know an adult Polly and she loves her name.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 29/12/2013 16:45

you are right op it is cute but not cutesy

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 16:46

lljkk that's the lyrics x oops x

I do like Polly, bit original and quirky, why not!

But Polly 'put the kettle on'
...and Polly 'want's a cracker' -

Maybe not so much OP x

GColdtimer · 29/12/2013 16:47

I never get Polly put the kettle on. Or what a cracker. Honestly, never.

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 16:48

two falls sorry! the 'want's a cracker' is in the Nirvana song OP mentioned x

bamboobutton · 29/12/2013 16:48

I'm a polly and i have to say its a pretty fab name.

all the put the kettle on stuff never really bothered me, even as a child.

ive never met another polly either.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 29/12/2013 16:51

I like Polly, makes me think of Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf (which is a Good Thing)

DitsyDonkey · 29/12/2013 16:55

No the Nirvana song is about a young girl who was raped at a concert and she was called Polly but I adore the song, and adore Nirvana even though it is pretty sad, however it is a name I would use anyway regardless of the Nirvana association. Polly put the kettle on is a nursery rhyme as is Miss Polly.

Oh and can I just say again the nursery rhymes, parrot and Nirvana associations do not bother me in the slightest.

What would bother me is if the name was just seen as oh another Holly, Molly etc name, as I want something quirky but not ridiculously so iykwim?!

I like it. Would be on my list had DH not vetoed it Angry

IsawJimmykissingSantaClaus · 29/12/2013 17:01

It's lovely. I only know one Polly and she's fab and quirky. Go for it!

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 17:01

ditsy didn't want to say, but as long as you know the meaning behind the nirvana song!!! xx

Still like Polly as a name though, very girlie and original and quirky!

I'd say go for it x

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 17:04

ditsy (you just got me searching for my nirvana tunes, was a massive fan an not listened in ages!! ta!! xx)

DitsyDonkey · 29/12/2013 17:16

oopsadaisyme Grin enjoy!

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 17:39

Ditsy Bless, I will!!! And starting to really love the name 'Polly' the more I think of it - think it's just entered my girlie names list (if I ever stop having boys!!)

xx

Flickstar · 29/12/2013 17:44

I think it's quirky and different to the Molly,Holly,Lily brigade. FWIW, I've never heard of the Nirvana connection. (I'm 31)

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 17:48

flickstar only mentioned because OP mentioned, think that's just one for us Nirvana fans (I'm 34), not that that has anything to do with it, just means OP and me are awesome and cool hehe!! xx

MoonHare · 29/12/2013 18:39

Definitely quirkier imo.

coconutty I don't think it 'blends' in at all (and personally, really?? I don't think any of those names blend cos they happen to end in an 'e' sound??) think that list could possibly be endless x

nooka · 29/12/2013 19:00

I like Polly, I don't know why is feels quirkier than the other names, but it does. Possibly because it's a name in it's own right rather than a diminutive, so it doesn't feel like a cutie little girl name, but a bit more feisty. Also I've only ever met one Polly, and she was feisty, clever and quite cool.

Plus there is always Clever Polly :)
