I really like the name Polly. I think it is quirkier than Holly, Molly, Millie, Tilly etc but would like to know if that is the general consensus.

As for all the nursery rhymes associations I think it is cute, PJ Harvey sells it for me as does the Nirvana song though I know it's inspiration is sad )

Thanks x

Ah, thank you ditsySmileshe is a right little charmer, and is such a character. People seem to really like the name. Have had nothing but positive comments about it. And people say how much she suits it too.

Love this thread, have to say Polly has now become a fave girl name x

looki · 29/12/2013 20:52

It fits in exactly with the Holly, Molly, Millie, Tilly brigade. It's not used as much but it's certainly the same.

JRmumma · 29/12/2013 21:00

Love Polly. Makes me think of Connie Booth's character in Fawlty Towers.

Yika · 29/12/2013 21:06

I think Polly is very different from Molly or Holly. Basically it sounds quite posh to me, and they do not. At all. So I wouldn't class it in the same bracket at all. It also sounds 'strong'. That said, I don't much like it myself.

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 21:08

Just don't name Polly Molly Tilly,....PMT not such good initials!!! xx

I wouldn't think any of these names sound posh in the slightest except perhaps Poppy which I also bundle into the Holly, Molly, Millie, Daisy category. However I'm just a stranger on the internet and you should call your daughter the name you love!

oopsadaisyme · 29/12/2013 21:28

coco i think, as humans, we are all used to alot of name pmsl!!!!x

Tikkamasala · 29/12/2013 23:11

I think Polly has a different and quirkier vibe to the other names you mentioned. However I also think Molly and Holly have different vibes to each other too (personally I love holly) and I would lump together Millie, Tilly, Maisie, poppy as more generic cutesy and less personality...

As well as the connotations mentioned, nirvana etc, I think of Polly in cs Lewis the magicians nephew, the girl who discovers narnia, which is a nice association I think

LOVE the name Polly!

Only reason that its not on my list is that my first ever dog was called Polly, even though I don't really remember her (got run over when I was 3/4), I know everyone in my family would associate it with the dog. Sad

BuntyPenfold · 30/12/2013 11:35

I love Polly. I know one from nursery, she must be 10 now, and I've never heard a negative comment.

DitsyDonkey · 30/12/2013 17:32

Ok, I think I'm pretty much in love with Polly at this stage.....so onto middle names now, some I like are....

Polly Clementine

Polly Juniper

Polly Bloom

Polly Seraphina

Polly Florence

Polly Beatrix

Any suggestions? I want something quirky! X

Just wanted to add my niece is Polly age 7. She was named after her great-great-grandmother. Her three best friends at school are Molly, Lilly and Millie! Grin

OpalMoonstone · 31/12/2013 21:50

Yes I agree it is more quirky than Molly etc. Lovely name

OpalMoonstone · 31/12/2013 21:56

I wouldn't put it in the same bracket as Holly, Lily, Molly, Ruby etc as there are lots of children with those names at my dds' primary but Polly much less popular. Not sure there are any, or maybe there was one a couple of years above my eldest. Not sure. Really like it though

OpalMoonstone · 31/12/2013 22:07

Honey They need to make friends with a Holly and a Tilly
Grin

OpalMoonstone · 31/12/2013 22:09

I like all of those middle names op except for Bloom and Florence and I think I prefer Beatrice to Beatrix

DitsyDonkey · 01/01/2014 04:21

Aah so cute Polly, Molly, Lilly and Millie!

Polly is lovely Smile. In fact, my own mother wanted to call me Polly, but was talked out of it by my father.

Also wouldn't group it with Holly, Molly, Milly and soon as not so commonplace but I think it's really lovely AND easy to spell which is really important (am not bitter at all having grown up with a name that had to be spelled literally every time Wink )

Polly - upper middle class Victorian girl with an inky pinafore and a penchant for sticking frogs in peoples beds. I like it.

Holly - modern everyday girl's name. It's inoffensive but bland.

Molly - my great aunts name. She was a farmer and usually elbow deep in a cow's vagina. A very capable and feisty woman's name to me.

Millie, Tillie - flighty flibbertigibbets prone to a lot of squealing.

Brilliant squoosh Grin
