Grin well in that case, absolutely!

WineIsMyMainVice · 03/10/2013 12:49

IMO it's a dogs name.
But if you like it, go for it.

JRmumma · 03/10/2013 12:54

I wanted Spike but dh vetoed it as a 'dogs name'.

But i agree, my friend has cat called Elliott which is another friends childs name, same goes for oscar. We cant stop people using certain names for animals, and maybe some are more associated such as spike as it was the dog in tom and jerry and rugrats, but who gives a shit? What about Spike Milligan? LEGEND!

It's great, and how about Patch or Spot for a middle name, although it might be best to save them for sibling names.

TheFantasticFixit · 03/10/2013 14:33

Great idea Life! Spike Patch Spot works perfectly with our surname!

Thanks, Fantastic! Smile

LifeInFlipFlops, you've made such a good argument for why people shouldn't call their kids something a little unusual. I've seen the error of my ways and I'm just off to change DS1 & DS2's names to George. Both of them, to be on the safe side. Gosh, I hope they'll 'fit in' now.

TheFantasticFixit · 03/10/2013 18:24

Ahem, Anjou - George was the name of my first dog. Someone should REALLY notify the Cambridges of their startling mistake

Will his full name be 'William the Bloody'?

I think Spike is great as a nick name, not on any paperwork but the name everyone calls him/knows him as.

eurochick · 04/10/2013 12:38

It's definitely a dog's name. Please don't inflict it on a child.

I'm sure its been said before, but Spikes Milligan and Lee weren't christned Spike.

As the child with the 'unusual' name (and it's a people name too) I'd say 'please don't'. Its bad enough with an unusual but not unheard of name. Had my folks called me Spikalina, Spikette or Spatula I would have divorced them.

Every sodding day 'what?, eh? How do you spell that? What were they smoking? Ohhhh how unusual..., wahahahahahahahahahaha!, you mush hate that, your parents must hate you to have lumbered you with that...' Etc etc etc.

impatientlywaiting · 04/10/2013 14:08

I think Spike is really sweet. Don't think I would go for it as I don't think I'm brave enough for reactions from people (such as the ones on this post - who I'm sure would put things in a much politer way if they were saying any of this to your face)

I would love it as a nickname, but can't think of any obvious names which would lead to spike as a NN. Actually what I might do would be to go for Spike as a middle name but call him it all the time. Solves any school forms/job application gripes that people have raised but he still has the name?

If you love it then go for it. Anyone who you know who thinks its a dogs name will quickly forget that once they meet your son. And people who will never meet him don't really matter.

devonsmummy · 04/10/2013 16:38

I like it - know a 6 year old & it really suits him

nicename · 04/10/2013 18:17

99% of peoples names suit them! I can't think of a single person who 'isn't' their name. Even the oddest names grow on you.

It's just mine that's shit (thanks mum)! Mum wasn't quite 100% sold on DSs name but even she said after meeting him 'yes, he is a littlenice' (perfectly normal, if a little boring, family name).

MomentForLife · 04/10/2013 18:23

I really like it. There are quite a few famous Spikes aren't there?

nicename · 04/10/2013 18:58

I don't think many are really called Spike though.

ItsWarmerInTheSouth · 04/10/2013 20:40

Edith Bowman has a Spike. And a Rudy. Both fab names!

Mumblyboo · 06/10/2013 13:44

My sister taught a Spike Dolphin once.....we really laughed about that one.... Sorry OP it's just a bit rubbish as a proper name. Cute Nn tho that he can drop when he wants too. I guarantee you won't be able to look at your little bundleof newborn boyish gorgeousness and still think he looks 'spikey'.... Good luck xx
