I have a William who I'd love to call spike as a nn but it's not catching on and everyone calls him Wills.

Bit of a cockup really as my ds1 is Harry. It only dawned on me when Wills was about a month old.

YouHaveAGoodPoint · 29/09/2013 15:16

Sorry, but it's another no from me. I did automatically think of it as being a dogs name although that's not necessarily a bad thing. My two eldest are both named after pets. Grin (The next door nieghbours dog and my aunties cat)

I think its a bit cutey for me.

However, I am a great believer in people claim g their kids whatever they want. My best bit of advice is not to tell ANYONE until after the child has been named then they just have to like it. Smile

YouHaveAGoodPoint · 29/09/2013 15:16

Naming NOT claiming Blush

daughterofafarmer · 29/09/2013 21:03

It's another no from me.

What about Rex?

TheFantasticFixit · 29/09/2013 22:07

Thanks all! Great to have your feedback - even yours, wembley, and Daleybump (I'm so flattered that you actually had a RL conversation as a result!). It's sadly a bit late to swap the baby for a Doberman though.

I'm off to have a couple of gins after this thread Wink

Thanks To everyone who loved it..!

Love Spike! DS was very nearly a wee Spike.

Flossie82 · 29/09/2013 22:19

Great name for a hedghog

MERLYPUSS · 30/09/2013 21:23

It is the best of bestest names! You will always get people that say 'it's a dogs name' or some such bollocks. I love it and would've had it but could not think of an equally cool name for the other dt.

miffybun73 · 30/09/2013 21:25

Absolutely love it, think it's cool, adorable etc. but I wouldn't use it myself as my taste in names is very conservative (Boring ?) :)

Floggingmolly · 30/09/2013 21:27

I get a mental picture of a shaven haired toddler with an earring, wearing a track suit and drinking a can of red bull. It's bloody awful.

Hellonewworld0 · 30/09/2013 21:29

No.

mistlethrush · 30/09/2013 21:34

I knew a cellist who was called Spike as his nickname. Its a good nickname - particularly for a cellist - but I wouldn't name him that.

TheFantasticFixit · 01/10/2013 11:11

Flogging - are you psychic?! That's exactly how I picture my son!

Merlypuss - I love you!

Do people still call their dogs Spike? Sounds like a dog in a 1970s kids comic.

Now it just brings to mind Spike Milligan for me, who was a genius. So for that reason, it is a great name.

caz05 · 01/10/2013 13:08

I know a Spyke (rather then spike) I like it

birdofthenorth · 01/10/2013 21:00

I think I am in the "love" camp, but if I met an awful Spike I think I could be persuaded otherwise! I think I also love Ike. Fewer dog/hedgehog connotations!

YouHaveAGoodPoint · 01/10/2013 21:24

Grin. Spyke just looks like a typo version of Skype to my dyslexic eyes

Onesleeptillwembley · 01/10/2013 22:04

Oh wow. Didn't think it could get worse, but Spyke? Really? Just why?

Anjou · 02/10/2013 05:13

I love Spike. Considered it for both DS (it would've really suited both, with hindsight). Yes, I understand that it's a little different and that if a child is very shy then Spike might not be the first name you'd associate them with but there's no need to be rude when you're making your point, people but when a kid has a name, that then IS their name. They make it their own. Also, IME, if you're the sort of person who likes a more unusual name, you raise your kids to wear them well and not give a toss about the narrow minded views of others.

We didn't go with Spike for two reasons: I ruled out all one syllable names as you can't 'do' anything with them generally (not an issue for some people but is for me), and I would've preferred a 'full' name with Spike as a nn/diminutive. Thing is, couldn't for the life of me think of ANYTHING that could be the 'full length' version of Spike. Still can't. Hmmmm ...

If you love it, use it. Good luck OP! Smile

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 02/10/2013 05:20

Since you ask... No.
I wouldn't name my dog Spike either.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 02/10/2013 05:21

Agree that you could use it as a nickname since you like it.

Sunnysummer · 02/10/2013 07:15

Lovely, lovely name for a dog. Or a hot vampire. Or a kitten. Real boy... not so much.

Unless you and your husband (and siblings and extended family) are devastatingly attractive, witty and athletic, and confident that your son will never have a very awkward/shy/chubby stage, I wouldn't risk it.

TheFantasticFixit · 02/10/2013 18:06

Anjou I adore you and your lovely post Thanks

Sunnysummer - secretly you must know me in RL. My family and I are ALL of those things! Wink
