Sonny?

Honest opinion on Sonny? It's either that or George and I'm just feeling that George is too popular. But Sonny was suggested by my DH (who's a boxing fan) and I much admit its growing on me. But is it solid enough for a boys name? X

And I bet in both cases Sonny is not their given name. Perhaps they acquired the nn because of their characters.

"It evokes a sort of youthful charm which is a quality I think all men should have, that cheeky charming chap characteristic..."

See, I can't stand the "cheeky charming chap type". Horses for courses, like everything else in life Grin

Are all Sonnys successful?

I love it, there's a Sonny in our family and to me it isn't too cute & babyish for an older boy, especially if you do as suggested by a couple of posters and maybe name him with a longer name xxxxson then he can choose when he's older. I like Grayson FWIW.

Sonny isn't even a particularly out there name.

I'd love to know where some of you live to think it is.

I wonder as well usual its getting more popular in 2010 it was just outside the top 100 boys names and has gone up sincd then.

seeker · 09/05/2013 17:56

It's not even remotely "out there". However, it is like calling your child Ducky or Lil' Man.

Nah. It's a perfectly fine name in its own right.

Might not fit the MN baby name criteria, but that's a good thing imo.

I know two boys named Sonny-one is six and one is 9.I prefer George but there isn't much wrong with Sonny though I can't really see it on a cool young 20/30 year old but there are so many of them about nowadays it will be quite normal when they grow up.

Good name. George is a boring name.

So sonny will make life hard but George is fine, I mean no-onehas heard if the nursery rhyme Georgie porgie pudding and pie, kissed the girls and made them cry...

They are both fine names and I know children and adults called both who seem happy with their names.

I am not sure that mnet judgment tallies up with RL tbh. There isn't this much angst in RL.

Its funny a while ago there was a thread about my dd's name and people on here said it meant/associated with drunk and too cheerful etc yet at the moment it seems to be on everyone's name lists on mnet and gets lots of positive comments. I would rather it didn't have the mnet seal of approval I think....

Ds4s name gets very negative replies on mnet, too 'rude' and a criminal name etc... Yet there are several famous people with his name and on BBC news the other day there was a UN spokesperson with his name, it didn't appear to have done him any harm. Nor the 60 + yr old locally I know with the same name who was thrilled to meet a child with the same name.

Just imagine being a middle aged woman called, say, Girly. Now imagine bing a middle aged man called Sonny.

Report
5madthings · 09/05/2013 20:18

Sonny is an actual, name tho and has been legally used as a first name since 1927, and was occasionally used before then as well. It has suffered various surges in popularity such as in the 1970s and is again on the rise.

Girly has not been used as a name.

You seem quite intent that it will be a problem seeker but I and others on this thread know adults with this name who are perfectly happy with their name and have encountered no problems at all.

Oh, seeker! It's not the same at all!
People have names like Johnny (condom), Dick (penis), Willy (penis), Pat (cow poo), and they get by just fine. Sonny is bright and fabulous.

I love it (also love George though. Sonny was DS1s first nickname. All the nurses in hospital called him it - they thought it was his real name. Was just thinking the other day how lovely it is. Wish he'd kept it.

Both gorgeous.

Thanks lentil, I think this has been a good test of my love for the name. And my reservations about it have kinda been dispersed with the good comments. The main argument seems to be its a boys name and not a mans but that was never an issue for me as I know an elder Sonny.

"It is cheerful and happy... Evokes youthful charm, the cheeky charming chap quality" was put perfectly. It's a happy name, it makes me smile and I am sure it's gonna right for us. If its a boy.

If not its Belle.

Grin Yay glad that can be shelved. Thanks guys x

I've been following this thread for the last few days.

I think you've made a brilliant choice.

A very good friend is called Sonny and he's in his 30s now, when i had my 2nd son, i named him Sonny too after my friend.
When i moved to our new house, found there was another Sonny here too, he must be about 14yrs old now.

Sonny suits my son and my friend perfectly. They are both actually really happy go luck people, both cheeky and both love their names.
My friend was over the moon i'd named my son after him.

Btw - nothing wrong with George either, its one of my other sons middle names.
