Sonny?

Honest opinion on Sonny? It's either that or George and I'm just feeling that George is too popular. But Sonny was suggested by my DH (who's a boxing fan) and I much admit its growing on me. But is it solid enough for a boys name? X

Really dislike. Sonny just seems to me like the parents couldn't even come up with a name - like girlie, or boy.
Not that keen on George either, but definitely better than Sonny.

Why do people like it?

It's dreadful. It's just an old-fashioned generic little-boy-name for use by strangers ("Run along home now, sonny"). Give the child a real name that is suitable for the grown-up that he will soon become.

Same reason I suppose anyone likes any name. I think it just sounds nice, I like the way it sounds when I say it, it suits our surname, his sisters name, i can imagine a baby, boy and man with that name. And like I said I know a grown man called Sonny, he's a friend of my fathers and I've always liked his quirky but not silly name. I like lots if other popular names Ben being my no.1 but we can't agree on any but Sonny. Hence me putting the feelers out. Think naming a child is just so difficult, obviously, but very difficult when I seem to have such different taste to DH. Our daughter wasn't named for a week. We literally tossed a coin between my chosen name and DH. He won! I struggled with it at first but now I adore it and proud to called her by it. It's not usual, but unpopular and traditional. I have lots of comments about the fact she has a 'proper' name. I'm not bothered too much about people's reaction but inklings that its a nickname would irritate me.

I quite like it.

I know a Sonny in his twenties and it really suits him.

I like it and have only ever met one.

I have one. Proper marmite name. DH and I both had marvellous, wonderful relatives called Sonny who were like proper grown-ups with jobs and everything Grin.

I think, as I said that, it's very nicknameish.

And I do worry another what it would be like to be a young Sonny trying to manage a team of older people for example. I think we should try not to do things that could make our children's lives even a little bit harder than they need to be. Lots we can't avoid- as my dd said once "mum, you've given me a full house- red hair, freckles, glasses and a posh voice" . I couldn't do anything about any of those 4, but at least I didn't also give her a name that would have made it 5!

Sonny and Cher (I think wife beater immediately).

Sorry, that's horrible and I'm in my late thirties so doubt a baby born now would have that association.

PoppyAmex · 07/05/2013 08:35

I meant my association is horrible, not your name.

My DSS is Sonny. It's a great name and I didn't realise it was popular. I don't teach any in a large comp.

Oh by the way, he has a 'sensible' middle name. Should he choose to be a high court judge.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 07/05/2013 08:42

Sonny Jim, sorry.

KittenofDoom · 07/05/2013 11:08

Is Jim the "sensible middle name"? Shock

It's an awful name. Sorry, but I hate it.

Grin. Could have been worse my favourite was Cosmo!

He is also afflicted with a short gene, a ginger 'fro and clearly a mad mother.

I'm sure he will cope.

I love it. For options, you could give him a longer name like:
Grayson
Jefferson
Jackson
Emerson
Mason
Nelson
Orson
Samson
Tennyson
Tyson

and use Sonny as the nickname.

LittleMissLucy · 08/05/2013 03:24

well I'd say George but that's only because I was at university with a very slutty girl called Sonny with very badly dyed hair. And I didn't like her, obviously.

pinkpiggy · 08/05/2013 04:06

It is a very popular name where I am- there are 3 in my DS's Reception class! I must say I really don't like the name and much prefer George.
