Sonny?

Honest opinion on Sonny? It's either that or George and I'm just feeling that George is too popular. But Sonny was suggested by my DH (who's a boxing fan) and I much admit its growing on me. But is it solid enough for a boys name? X

Santiago? Santino?

Sonny Bono was Salvatore.
Maybe it can work for many names beginning with S!

Dreadful, sorry.

Imagine it on a grown man's cv.

FlipFlops, didn't seem to do this lot any harm: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny

Love George, not so keen on Sonny, just don't see it as a "name", more a nickname.

I said I liked it earlier, but after being asked by seeker I actually thought about why I liked it.

I like the name Sonny because to me it sounds cheerful and happy. It evokes a sort of youthful charm which is a quality I think all men should have, that cheeky charming chap characteristic, someone with a twinkle in their eye.

George has dead eyes (I joke).

Having clicked on quite a few "Sonnys" from the wiki list linked above, every one so far has been a nickname, and not the original given name.

My dad was known as Sonny all his life. Her actual name is quite different; he was named after his father. BigBongTheory is right; it's a recognised form of junior, quite bizarre to make it a name in it's own right.

And just lol at the high court judge comments.

I also agree with choosing a longer name and then using Sonny as a shorter nickname, so that the DS can choose when he is older. However, the first Sonny that springs to mind is of the Corleone variety, so it's probably not a name I would choose myself, IYSWIM.

I love it and considered it for DD (before we knew she was a DD btw!). We liked it because off the character Sonny from The Godfather (James Caan's character)....in the film it's short for Santino.

We almost went for Samson with nn Sonny. I really like it, but didn't think it suited DS2 when he arrived.

I love it and don't think it should be just a nickname to a "proper" first name. Sonny is enough in my opinion. Though I think Sonny Bill Williams (new zealand rugby player) may make me biased Wink

Though I do think it depends on the surname though, as I think some surnames would just sound silly next to it.

But it's a generic nickname for a little boy!

Would you call a child Laddie? Or Lassie? Or Ducky? Or Pet? or Young-feller-me-lad?

Op I just read the other posts and I really think you should go with sonny as long as it goes well with your last name. I don't think George is nearly as nice.

Littlehousesomewhere · 09/05/2013 09:49

Well names like John, Harry, johnny and Jane are all used to describe "generic people" and are still popular so I don't think that makes much difference.

tigold spot on, both (grown up successful careers) Sonnys I know are a pair of characters with a twinkle in their eye, a ready laugh and bags of charisma.

I love the name George as well but if your hearts set on Sonny then go for it, gorgeous name.

I don't think giving a child a name actually imbues them with a whole pre ordained character / personality Confused
Plenty of John's, Toby's, etc. will be just the same.

Maybe they've had to be like that to survive? Just a thought.......
