What's Your Name?

manicinsomniac · 22/11/2012 17:48

We've done mother's, father's, grandmother's, grandfather's, children's names. But I don't think I've seen an inspiration thread based on our own (maybe we don't like our own generation's names!)

Thought it might be interesting though. For those who want to share.

Also, how common was your name when you were born? And do you like it?

I'm a Rebecca. I think it was in the top 5. Certainly top 10. I was frequently in situations where we had to decide who was going to be Rebecca, Becca, Becky, Bex etc just to distinguish. I still really like it though. But I don't like Becky and am not that sold on Becca and Bex either.

I'm a Roxanne, I have met two others a similar age to me. I used to hate it as people would sing the song at me very out of tune but I like my name now and I'm glad I wasn't given a boring name Xmas Smile

Arkady, after the female protagonist in Isaac Asimov's "Second Foundation" - though it's actually a male Slavic name meaning "the Prince".

Amelia but known as Mia since I was about 10. Never met another of either name until I was 25. Now both are regularly in the top 10 I think.

I'm Susan (born 1970).

Family call me Sue, which I hate. I like Susan!

I'm Natalie Marie - Natalie after Natalie Wood, Marie is my mum's middle name. I'm Nat to most people, Natalie only to my husband for some reason!

I'm a 79 baby, and Natalie was the most popular girls name in my Catholic primary school around age 7!

Aw, Queen. I absolutely love the name Samantha! I named my favourite doll Samantha when I was about five, and I still love it 30+ years later.

I'm a Tamzin.
Hated it growing up. Got laughed at when it was first called on a register at high school. Inappropriate spellcheck suggestions sometimes.

Now I like it. But not when I get called Tammy or Tazmin. I was the only Tamzin in school and then college, but it has become more popular recently and I've met a few others. And one of the Mums at school named her child after me.Grin I don't like my name shortening, but specifically chose names for my 2 DDs that were classic names that could be shortened.

My name's Cassandra, but I've always been Cassie. I like my name; I rarely meet another Cassie.

My name is Joanne. Please call me Jo.

I was born in 1974. There were three Joanne's in my class at school. Two of us had surnames that started with a 'W'. IIRC I was referred to as "Little Jo".

Can't believe I'm the first Louise to post...mid 70s baby. One of 3 in my class at high school. Was going to be called Natalie, which I much prefer.

Always wanted to be called Laura. I alway get excited if i hear of a baby called Louise now...somehow seems nicer now it's less common!

My year at school/uni was full of Michelle/Julie/Claire/Tracy's.

I'm a Lauren.

And a 1991 baby. Mum named me after Lauren Bacall. I don't think it was overly popular atm but i think did get more so further into the 90's. I don't think its ever been in the Top 10.

My OH is an Aaron.
My Mum's a Michelle.
My Dad's a Paul.
My sisters are, Paige, Keavy, Sophie & Kayleigh.
My brothers are, Conor, Joshua, Jamie, Cameron & Jack.
My nephew is Riley.
And my daughter is Isabelle.

I think a good variety there! Haha :)

Ellie, short for Eleanor (pronounced Elena, not norrr). Always liked Ellie but not so much Eleanor. Ellie is becoming far more popular and i predict in a few years schools will be full of them!

catinsantaboots- I know a Bongo (Ben) who's engaged to an Alexandra nn Ally!

I'm Rhiannon Elizabeth, born mid 80's. Was going to be Rebekkah right up until a week before I was born and Mum suddenly changed her mind. My Dad made her research the name thoroughly first as he thought it was the name of a witch!

I used to hate having an unusual name and always shortened it to Rhi, but now I love it. Glad I wasnt one of umpteen Becky/Becks/Rebecca in my year :D
