What's Your Name?

We've done mother's, father's, grandmother's, grandfather's, children's names. But I don't think I've seen an inspiration thread based on our own (maybe we don't like our own generation's names!)

Thought it might be interesting though. For those who want to share.

Also, how common was your name when you were born? And do you like it?

I'm a Rebecca. I think it was in the top 5. Certainly top 10. I was frequently in situations where we had to decide who was going to be Rebecca, Becca, Becky, Bex etc just to distinguish. I still really like it though. But I don't like Becky and am not that sold on Becca and Bex either.

Sarah. Always one of many. Never minded though, think its quite a nice name really, if a bit plain :) (although growing up loved the fact it means 'princess' in Hebrew)

Joanne, there were 3 of us in my year at school and we all had the middle name Louise as well!

Mairi. Gaelic for Mary. No one can spell it. Ever. Or so it seems!

Thwarted - I also have Louise as a middle name. You weren't a late 70's/early 80's child by any chance were you?

Lotte. Just that, not short for anything. Never met another one. Although DH came and gleefully pointed out that the Private Eye "Grim Up North" cartoon had a little girl called Lotte in it a couple of weeks ago. I'm 27, so I think I'm well ahead of the curve.

Wasn't a huge fan when I was a child, but I like it now. No one can spell it, an lots of people struggle to pronounce it though... Hopefully that'll change if it starts to get more popular.

Lindsay (named after a barmaid my dad knew...apparently!) Was going to be called Natalie which I love, but mums best friend beat her to it.

A little girls name in my opinion, and no-one ever spells it right!

When I was a baby (I'm told) my parents couldn't think of any decent names so called me Jacqueline....I hated it. There were three of in the same class and we'd get called a variety of "Jackie" "laughing jack-ass" and so forth. So when I was 18 and legally able, I went to a solicitor's office and changed my name officially. I chose my own name, Alexandra, and have had it proudly for years, never let it be shortened to Alex.....although I have a very dear friend who refers to me as Allissandra which is lovely. People find it odd when I say I chose my own name!! I also have to produce various legal documents to prove the change because my birth certificate says one thing, and my marriage certificate says another...
When I had children of my own I didn't want them to have boring names (that they'd have to change!) so I called my daughter Theone (pronounced Thee-oh-nee) and I haven't met or heard of any other Theone's so far...

Sareth.

Rhymes with Gareth. I like it, I get called Sarry (to rhyme with Harry) as a nickname. Never met another, until a friend of my mum's named gave it to her daughter as a middle name.

I was one of a million! Even living in an area where being white put me in the minority there was always another in the class! I believe that it was to do with my parents liking the name rather than because it was popular. I'm Claire!

Popular names now don't seem to be AS popular as they used to be.

Harriet, middle name Alice. Harriet means 'home ruler' and Alice means 'noble' - rather like that combination! :)

When I was born Harriet was the 68th most popular name in UK. Now it's higher up I think.

Every other Harriet I've met has spelt her name Harriet, however I am forever having people spell my name Harriett, Harriette, and worstly Harriott. I do like my name though even though it's now very popular.

Abigail. Most people call me Abi. I like it well enough.

Unusual when I was at school - no others at primary, one in the year below me at secondary, and one in the year below her, 120 girls per year. Much more popular now - ranks around the top 30.

Hated it ever since I can remember, always wanted to be called Caroline for some reason.

Only ever got called Deborah off me mam when I was in trouble as a kid.

My middle name is - I believe - unique. Cornish and very old.

To reveal it would definitely 'out' me.

I'm an Æva! Said aye-vah. It took me a long time to find out how to do the Æ on the computer. There's a reason why I have it though- I'm Icelandic.

I'm a Kelly. I hate it. It rhymes with a lot of words!

It was either Kelly or Paige though.

I was born in 1990 and there were a few Kelly's in my year. In my street there are 4 of us. In my local pub there is 3. None are from my street either!

Seeing as I've outed myself already with Æva, I'll say my middle name.Elsð (Elsa in Icelandic basically). My parents evidently had a competition with all the other parents to see how many accents they can fit in a full name.

I'm Beth, have always been Beth although it's a shortening of my middle name. Only my GP calls me Catherine.

I've only ever met one other Beth of my age. I really like it.

Fiona. Don't know of any others. Hated it growing up, love it now.

I'm Amy. Always liked it. I've known a few others but not loads.

My dad said he named me after Amy turtle from some tv show that I now can't remember! I was almost Elizabeth but definitely prefer Amy, although I do get aims as a nickname a lot.

Luisa, I have only met a handful of others with this spelling as its the Italian spelling.

It means woman warrior which makes me laugh. I'm just a big pussy cat!

I'm Victoria, didn't know many others my age while growing up but strangely now I know quite a lot, including my best friend. I hated it when I was younger, 27 now and have finally decided I actually like it.
