What's Your Name?

manicinsomniac · 22/11/2012 17:48

We've done mother's, father's, grandmother's, grandfather's, children's names. But I don't think I've seen an inspiration thread based on our own (maybe we don't like our own generation's names!)

Thought it might be interesting though. For those who want to share.

Also, how common was your name when you were born? And do you like it?

I'm a Rebecca. I think it was in the top 5. Certainly top 10. I was frequently in situations where we had to decide who was going to be Rebecca, Becca, Becky, Bex etc just to distinguish. I still really like it though. But I don't like Becky and am not that sold on Becca and Bex either.

Ive shortened mine to Viki since i was about 14, no one ever spells it right :( Its not as if its even that hard, there's only four letters!

Possibly SP, though your do seem to be the only fanjo lurking around Grin

I always get people writing my name down as Nicola, apparently Nikki isn't a real name and I must be lying about it not being shortened! Glad to know that there is another Nikki out there though Grin

I worked with a Nickie a few years ago. She looked quite masculine as well and I honestly thought that she was a slightly feminine bloke from the spelling of her name Blush

I'm Frances, pretty unusual but not out if the ordinary though I get really pissed off when it's spelt Francis

Was never Fran, Frankie etc but nicknamed Effie by my gran (Frances Emily = FE = Effie) and my uni friends adopted it as my NN. Thanks to Facebook its now stuck and many more people call me Effie thAn Frances.

Not bothered what I'm called but turn 30 next year and reckon I'll try to start using my proper name again

I'm a nichola, quite a few nicola's at school but I was better coz I had a 'h'. Found out later in life that I only got the 'h' as the registrar spelt my name wrong on the birth certificate and dad didn't correct her. Needless to say one very angry mother when he returned home Smile. I really like it, I get called nic quite a lot

Michelle... Like in my forum name!

BananaBubbles I also hate when people pronounce it Mee-Shell, or call me Mish or Meesh for short, have a particularly annoying uncle who insists on calling me meeshell and makes my skin crawl! Otherwise I quite likely name. There were 4 of us in my school year, but haven't met another one since!

Elizabeth. Only ever met one my own age. I don't mind it, but I do shorten it, because I've got a long middle name and surname.

I like it because it's common enough that people have heard it, can spell it and say it, but not so common that I've been Elizabeth A in school.

Another Michelle. Was one of about 6 at school! Very imaginative parents. Also hate being called meesh or meeshell!

My 'Sunday' name is Kathleenann.

As a small child my mother made a point of telling me repeatedly that my name was Kathleenann not Kathleen, as people tended to shorten it.

I love my name but a lot of people (especially healthcare professionals for some reason Angry) tend to see my name on the top of the notes they are holding and still call out Kathleen. It's a right bugbear of mine, so......

......I've shortened it to Kat and that's how most people know me. I do much prefer Kathleenann though Grin.

I'm Carrie but Caroline at job interviews and when complaining about shoddy service. I liked it more before Sex And The City came along.

I kind of think this thread helps the argument that we really don't need to worry about name popularity.

Most of us are of the generation where Sarahs, Lauras, Emmas, Rebeccas, Claires, Nicolas, Gemmas and Michelles seemed to be everywhere but most of these names have only come up once, maximum twice.

And I think whoever said that the really popular names now are less popular than the really popular names of the 80s - people have branched out.

I'm a Ceri (Welsh form of Kerry)

I like it, it means love although a lot of English people I meet say "Seri"

Not popular by any means, but I know of plenty of others here in Wales

I must admit though....it comes in handy if I am ever trying to pretend to be posh polishing tiara he he he Grin
