Help me fall in love again with Amelie

We called our daughter Amelie and at the time I loved it. It was also the only name my husband liked so I really didn't give it enough thought.

Now 2 and a half years later I loathe it :-( Mostly because of the things I have read on here (why oh why didn't I discover this place beforehand?!!)

So PLEASE can you post some things to help me like it again? (please only post nice things tho - am sure this is total misuse of this board but I can't change her name now so need to find the love for it again!!)

Thank you!!

Well you can't blame people in England for pronouncing a name après le façon anglais: I dare say you'd look askance if a friend said in all seriousness that she was going for a weekend to Paree! You have got to get past that, and when you do you will hear it is a good name. It's not so girly as to be wet and as with all pretty names for girls, it holds the potential for her as an adult to be underestimated and then to be kick-ass tough when required! Go Amelie!!

I may not apply, but if you had a reason for choosing it in the first place (beyond it sounding nice) oresumably that still holds good?

Naming a child is a huge responsibility and its its not just their name, its a name you've given them and as human beings we can sometimes be really hard on ourselves for the decisions we make. Amelie is a lovely, sensible, strong name which could take her wherever she wants to go in her life. Have more confidence in yourself and trust yourself more! Congratulations on your beautiful healthy toddler :-)

It's a beautiful name and I think you chose well.

justhayley · 30/12/2012 23:36

I LOVE it. I picture an Amelie to be beautiful, feminine, traveled, intelligent, open, & spiritual. It's one of my fav girls names, don't hate it it's lovely

toobreathless · 31/12/2012 11:07

It's not to my taste & I wouldn't use it, but then I wouldn't use a name in the top 100 just for that reason alone.

BUT it it popular for a reason:

It is beautiful, feminine, sounds lovely to say, Perfect on a teeny baby or a grown women.

Popular names are popular because most people like them!

There is a lot of snobbery on MNs, and snobbery against baby names is utterly ridiculous. Ignore!

elsabel · 31/12/2012 22:50

This name is beautiful, stunning! I love it and if have a girl will seriously consider naming her it...im toying between this and Emily. Amelie is pretty for all ages and sounds very sophisticated aswell. Like toobreathless said it is popular, but any popular name will get negative comments aswell as positive ones. Please enjoy it, I just hope I have the choice to use it before someone I know does as its so god damn beautiful!

zenoushka · 08/01/2013 22:22

Oh I so love the name Amelie! Elegant and soooo pretty!

3smellysocks · 09/01/2013 00:10

stunning!

atthewelles · 09/01/2013 12:35

OP you could post any name on here and some posters won't like it; 'it's twee', 'it's dated' 'it's too popular'

while other posters will describe it as 'really pretty' 'lovely old fashioned name' 'I know a toddler with that name and she's gorgeous'.

Names are totally subjective and you are never ever going to find a name that everyone likes.

RaeOfLight · 29/05/2013 11:11

Ooh - just came back to this and have seen there are extra comments. Thank you all so much. I have actually warmed to it again now, and even though every now and then I hear a name and think "ooh, I wish I'd called her that", I do wonder if other parents do this on a regular basis?!!

It's a beautiful name, and it's on my list for dc1. I think it's feminine and stylish, works for both a child and an adult and has lots of potential nicknames.

I'm glad you've warmed to it again op Smile

GW297 · 30/05/2013 22:15

That is good news op. Amelie is still one of my very favourite girls' names.

Milasmummy · 05/01/2019 08:47

Dear @RaeOfLight
My sister is thinking of naming her daughter Amelie. What are your thoughts about the name now after a couple of years, do you still loathe it? Would you advise to use this name?

Astronica · 05/01/2019 09:17

I think Amelie is a lovely name. Many people agree - that's why it's quite popular. I don't think it's linked to any particular class. Just my take, but I don't see this forum representing the views of society generally regarding names. It seems very strongly negative about anything that isn't thoroughly conservative and mainstream.
