Help me fall in love again with Amelie

We called our daughter Amelie and at the time I loved it. It was also the only name my husband liked so I really didn't give it enough thought.

Now 2 and a half years later I loathe it :-( Mostly because of the things I have read on here (why oh why didn't I discover this place beforehand?!!)

So PLEASE can you post some things to help me like it again? (please only post nice things tho - am sure this is total misuse of this board but I can't change her name now so need to find the love for it again!!)

I've got an Amelie, and I can't imagine dd with any other name. I've never seen anything negative on here (but then I've never done a search as she was 1 when I joined and therefore already named!) and in rl I get told it's a pretty name all the time. I think it's feminine, and popular enough to be 'known' but not too popular if that makes sense? We pronounce it 'Amm-eh-lee', dh is French and says it slightly differently if he's speaking French to when he says it in English, more like 'Amm-ay-lee'. I shorten it to Melie sometimes.

And yes, I also feel like all I say is 'Amelie, no!', but I think that'd happen with any name 5 weeks into the holidays!

I've got a Tabitha too and I don't give a flying fuck what others think. She's my gorgeous, darling baby and I think her name suits her.

I think it's a lovely name... Very pretty !! DD1 has a cutesy name and it suits her (even tho she's a monster) but I'm having the same problem with DD1 who is 15 weeks, we gave her a normal name but my Dh messed with the spelling (even tho I told him mn would flame him haha) I absolute hate it, it doesn't suit her it's far too harsh and I wish to god he hadnt done it, not to mention the fact she will hate us for it when she gets older hahaha I think Millie would be lovely for your DD's nick name then she's got 2 lovely names to choose from when she can make her own mind up

Thank you all once again - it honestly is making me feel much better... I know I shouldn't care but sadly I am one of those people that do. It was met with "oh" when I told my family and that started the doubts.

YoullLaugh - you are absolutely right. I NEVER think about anyone else's name they just are "name". Very good point.

Sophia, Rose, Isabella & Grace are all beautiful names - and again prefer them to Amelie now. Why do people not like them??

My niece is called Amelie, and she is one of the sweetest, most loving, funny, warm, adorable, blue-eyed little darlings you ever did see. I wasn't sure about the name at first (because I am a triffic snob and thought naming a child after a film was a bit orf ) but I love the name now.

How can you hate your own child's name? Don't you just associate it with your lovely daughter?

Rae - Have a search of the name threads if you don't know what is 'wrong' with Rose and Grace. You will see that they attract pretty intense venom from some quarters as middle names. Apparently they are far too common and show no imagination and are meh and bland. They are the Louise and Jane of their generation as middle names (which they are - every second girl has them, but for good reason. They are gorgeous and go with lots of names).

George, Isabella and Sophia are all knocked for being too common, will date badly, showing no imagination, blah blah.

See how bonkers that all sounds? The negatives on Amelie are just as bonkers, you just can't see it. .

When I told DM Dd1's name, she said. "What?.... Oh?'. She had had a dream that I called her Emily Jane and was most confused it hadn't come true . She loves it now though. Don't place too much weight on first reactions.

Rae have just tried to look on Mumsnet history for threads hating the name Amelie, most threads hate most other names too. The only one that I kind of agree with is that saying Amelie in a strong Scottish accent doesn't sound nice. I am not Scottish so not affected by that. We don't use any nicknames for Amelie, maybe Amm occasionally. We pronounce her name Amm-eh-lie. I know the French pronounce it differently, we didn't put an accent on her name. I think Mellie would work as a nickname for your dd. Hope it grows on you again.
