Help me fall in love again with Amelie

RaeOfLight · 28/08/2012 19:29

We called our daughter Amelie and at the time I loved it. It was also the only name my husband liked so I really didn't give it enough thought.

Now 2 and a half years later I loathe it :-( Mostly because of the things I have read on here (why oh why didn't I discover this place beforehand?!!)

So PLEASE can you post some things to help me like it again? (please only post nice things tho - am sure this is total misuse of this board but I can't change her name now so need to find the love for it again!!)

Thank you!!

I think I might add it to my baby name list too

Abra1d · 29/08/2012 12:01

It's a very pretty name. I love it.

mummabug · 29/08/2012 12:03

My 3 yo DD is Amelie. I think its gorgeous and can't imagine another name for her. For the first six months I wasn't sure (we had such trouble finding a girls name we liked at all) but now I love it!

WHATEVER NAME YOU CHOOSE some stranger on a baby name forum will hate it for one reason or another. Who cares? If they knew your daughter they would soon change their opinion. How many people on here say "i know a little girl called ...... and she's so sweet...i love that name now".

I live on the coast in the south west, I've never met any other children with her name, let alone 'chavs'. It's beautiful.

Viviennemary · 29/08/2012 12:07

Has she got a middle name you could use for a while. But there is nothing wrong with the name Amelie. Sometimes I think I wish I called DD a more unusual name rather than a boring everyday one. But she says she is happy with the boring name! What about Amy for short.

RaeOfLight · 29/08/2012 12:36

Wow this is all very encouraging - thank you for replying.

LOVE the nn Mimi - how can I make it stick??!!!! And I love being called a daftie. :-) It's not very insulting and it made me smile... And you're probably right!

Tigers we pronounce it the same as you. No accent either. Upthread when I said some people say "Amma-Lee" I kind of meant that people say it as 2 names. A bit like saying Emma-Lee instead of Emily... Just to explain myself a better to Elah

And yes - she does have a middle name but as mentioned above thats one of the "too common, no imagination" types ;-)

:) I love being called a daftie too. It makes me feel like the person saying is Mrs Doubtfire and is shaking his/her head with a wry but kindly smile!

Incidentally my middle name is Grace, and if I am ever lucky enough to have a little girl it will be her middle name too. And I have my faults, but no-one has ever accused me of being common, or lacking in imagination, so they can actually suck my dick.

PedallingSquares · 29/08/2012 12:49

I think this need to find a name that is different is all a bit strange really.

I find unusual names all sort of jumble together in my head in a muddle labelled 'unusual names' and I can't remember them at all which I don't think what the parents had in mind.

But maybe that's just me.

Amelie on the other hand is gorgeous.

PedallingSquares · 29/08/2012 12:52

I'd just start calling her Mimi if you love it. Will your DH use it too?

RaeOfLight · 29/08/2012 12:57

:-D Jodie !! I did actually "LOL" at that!!

RaeOfLight · 29/08/2012 13:02

He might Pedalling ... Although he loves her name - this is all his fault after all!

I totally agree with wildspinning.

FWIW I think it's a beautiful name and is number one on my list, with the nickname Mimi :)

winkle2 · 30/08/2012 11:02

Also FWIW (again!) I hate the names most MNers love, like Beatrice, etc - so old fashioned!

LOVE AMELIE!

NoComet · 30/08/2012 11:14

It's a beautiful name, it is as others have said, 2.5 that's the problem.

At that age DD1 climbed, fiddled with every non toy item in the entire world and ran off constantly. Her name got completely worn out and it doesn't have an obvious NN.

Yika · 30/08/2012 11:30

Mimi is lovely as a nn, also like Amy as suggested by Viviennemary. You could call her Amelie-Mimi till she gets used the nickname, then just use one or the other as the mood strikes you!

RaeOfLight · 30/08/2012 16:25

Thats a good idea Yika to get her used to it...

Thanks again for the positive comments - I am definitely liking it more over the last few days.

It's s beautiful name!!!! Love it love it love it :)

squoosh · 30/08/2012 16:47

I find it really odd that nearly three years after you named your daughter you could go learn to 'loathe' her name. And all down to anonymous internet opinions. To be honest I'd find your reaction odd even if the negative opinions were from people you knew in real life. Surely the name becomes irrelevant once her personality starts to develop and from then on she just is her name?

Without wanting to be rude, get a grip!

CharlieCoCo · 30/08/2012 18:25

what about Mila for a nn? i would have an Amelie and would either nn her Millie or Mila (Meela not miller). i know its a little far fetched but my name starts with a corn and nn starts with a con so its not toally out there.
Possibly Amy, but thats just changing her name really lol.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 30/08/2012 20:58

Lovely name! How about Milly for a nickname.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 30/08/2012 20:59

squoosh I think it's a human reaction.

RaeOfLight · 31/08/2012 18:40

Really like Mila too. It's definitely partly down to overuse. Had a trying day today & it only started to bother me again at about 3pm. Thank you for all the lovely comments and reassurances.

im having the exact same feelings about my sons name hes only 3mnths old but i cant even bring myself to use his name &just call him the baby. i think it was negative comments which set me off too or maybe PND. i really want to love his name again (its noah by the way) i suffer really bad anxiety over it. how do u feel about your daughters names these few mnths on? have u fell in love with amelie again? its a lovely name by the way

TheCatInTheHairnet · 28/12/2012 18:23

Amelie is a lovely name!

Hey, things could be worse. My daughter has a name that was very uncommon 10 years ago and is now in the top 15. And to top it off, with her middle name, there is now a porn star with the same name!! FFS!! Xmas Confused

But I still really love her name. It suits her.

strumpetpumpkin · 28/12/2012 18:30

its a beautiful name

GW297 · 28/12/2012 18:36
