Opinions on Otto?

We started calling the bump Otto, just as a random bump nickname whilst discussing what to actually call him/her. Now we know it is a boy, Otto has kind of stuck and it is growing on us. Is it actually ridiculous and we've just gotten used to it? I'm worried it is too German sounding in a comic way...

It does sound German; indeed, it is a German name! I also think of 'Otto-man' - the school bus drive in The Simpsons.

That said, it is a nice sounding name and I think one that would be unique without being weird in the playground :)

WithACherryOnTop · 10/06/2012 10:03

I love it.It's not comical at all.

DottieRose · 10/06/2012 10:03

I think it is a beautiful ame and not at all ridiculous! Not common but not way out there either.....the perfect balance!

TalHotBlond · 10/06/2012 10:10

I like it but like another poster I'm sure it's the name of a character in The Simpsons which was very popular when I was at school (although may be less so now). I don't necessarily think that's something which would cause problems though?

WinkyWinkola · 10/06/2012 10:25

I really like it.

It is German/northern European sounding name - I don't see the problem with that though.

sunnydays81 · 10/06/2012 10:42

I love it Smile

blueglue · 10/06/2012 10:54

Honestly if you asked 100 people on the street (rather than on mumsnet), plenty of them would chuckle at it and some would say WTF?

Badgerina · 10/06/2012 11:13

It is faintly comical, but I really don't think it should put you off.

23 years ago, many people considered my brother's name, Oliver/Olly as comical (seriously! They did Smile) but now it's the most popular boys name in the UK.

Otto is awesome. And it's a palindrome Grin

snowshoes · 10/06/2012 11:40

I think it's cool.

tummytickler · 10/06/2012 11:58

I like Otto. I know a little Otto and have never seen anybody do a Hmm face upon learning his name.

Rindercella · 10/06/2012 12:02

Otto is a fab name, and as Badgerina pointed out, it is a palindrome too, which makes it doubly cool Smile

poppydaisy · 10/06/2012 12:42

I don't like it at all. Otto is a German comedian - it is very uncool over there.

Booette · 10/06/2012 14:15

I love it. I know a gorgeous little boy with called Otto, it totally suits him.

cheesesarnie · 10/06/2012 14:16

i love it.

babloogirl · 10/06/2012 14:18

I love it, I know a little Otto, he is the sweetest little boy you could imagine!

Go for it!!!Smile

evamummy · 10/06/2012 14:31

I'm not keen, I'm afraid.

Sarcalogos · 10/06/2012 14:35

I wouldn't call a child Otto if I didn't have german family links.

Can't really explain why, but I only like it in that context I'm afraid.

tammy234 · 10/06/2012 15:57

I dislike it and find it comical sounding, sorry. I do like Arlo or Cosmo very much.

hatebeak · 10/06/2012 16:00

I like it a lot, but I have a feeling there are going to be lots of little Ottos about in the next few years, if that bothers you. It's the new Arlo.

mybootsaremuddy · 10/06/2012 16:28

We have an Otto...... but he has 4 legs a wet nose and farts a lotGrin

It is a realy cool name though for a child or animal.

kickingKcurlyC · 10/06/2012 18:25

I think I like it... but I'm a bit confused because I know a dog called Otto.
Is it too doggy?

StepOutOfSpring · 10/06/2012 19:06

"I'm worried it is too German sounding in a comic way..."

I think that's a good summary, sorry!

ThePathanKhansWitch · 10/06/2012 19:09

I'd expect to see a Jolly little German man in Lederhosen eating a steaming plate of sausages. Sorry it's awful.

AKissIsNotAContract · 10/06/2012 19:16

I like it

survivingspring · 10/06/2012 20:21

I like it - I think it's a cool name and (at the moment anyway) a bit different. I also think it will get more popular and people will forget about any dodgy links to The Simpsons!
