Opinions on Otto?

We started calling the bump Otto, just as a random bump nickname whilst discussing what to actually call him/her. Now we know it is a boy, Otto has kind of stuck and it is growing on us. Is it actually ridiculous and we've just gotten used to it? I'm worried it is too German sounding in a comic way...

Love it!

TidyDancer · 10/06/2012 20:22

German in a comic sounding quite is a reasonably good assessment I'm afraid.

Otto is also the name of a military vehicle in NCIS.

TidyDancer · 10/06/2012 20:23

comic sounding quite way

Don't know what happened there! Blame the iPhone.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 10/06/2012 21:00

I'm with German sounding in a comic way, though not as bad as my Uncle Willi ! I also have an Uncle Otto (my Mum is German) and wanted something that would be ok in Germany, Otto wasn't on my list.

daisydoodoo · 10/06/2012 21:05

I'm not keen. Maybe because the only Otto I know (10yr

daisydoodoo · 10/06/2012 21:06

I'm not keen. Maybe because the only Otto I know (10yr Old rugby player) is the meanest, most spoilt, nastiest child I have ever had the displeasure to come across and his patents weren't much better either.

daisydoodoo · 10/06/2012 21:07

Oh my gosh I'm having problems typing tonight! Parents not patents.

Rosa · 10/06/2012 21:15

Otto - 8 in Italian ..... Or it makes me think of a big black dog...no idea why!!!
Other than that its your bump so your choice!

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 10/06/2012 21:18

My daughter has a Barbie film called Rapunzel and Gothel's pet ferret is called Otto in it. That's all I can think of Blush

But it sounds like a nice name.

emmyloo2 · 11/06/2012 09:40

I love it.

kerala · 11/06/2012 14:22

We would have used this had we had a boy. My MIL is German though and was horrified when we told her this is what DD would have been called if a DS. Her comment was that Otto is a name for a "farm boy" all the better reason to use it as MIL has the worst taste of anyone I know so if she doesn't like it its a real endorsement Grin.

tammy234 · 11/06/2012 14:56

kerala, whilst I don't doubt your MIL's bad taste, the name Otto has a VERY un-cool, comical image in Germany, mainly due a very well known comedian who goes by that name as well as being the name of one of the largest mail order companies (Otto Versand). Other old fashioned names (e.g. Karl, Leopold, Walter) seem to be making a comeback, but Otto is just too 'silly'.

squoosh · 11/06/2012 14:59

People featured in Living Etc always have sons called Otto.

True fact.

tammy234 · 11/06/2012 15:03

Not sure what that has to do with it Confused?

squoosh · 11/06/2012 15:04

It's called an observation. Is that ok?

sonniboo · 11/06/2012 15:09

I don't like Otto at all, I'm afraid.

StepOutOfSpring · 11/06/2012 15:17

What other names do you like, OP?

crochetcircle · 11/06/2012 21:45

I love it, really nice name. Go for it!

bananaramma · 12/06/2012 09:30

Otto is awful imo, and yes it is comical sounding to my ears.

lilbreeze · 12/06/2012 09:37

I know a little Otto and think it's a lovely name

However I wouldn't personally choose a "foreign" name if I had no connecting to that country.

ripsishere · 12/06/2012 09:44

It is the name of a cheap food shop in Switzerland. Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap.
It was always known as Otto's bingo bongo lotto in our house for some reason.

bananaramma · 12/06/2012 09:45

Especially as Otto von Bismarck is the main person that comes to (my mind).

bananaramma · 12/06/2012 09:46

And thiswww.otto.de/

ripsishere · 12/06/2012 10:10

and this Not that you are likely to visit Otto's bingo bongo lotto.

MarySA · 12/06/2012 10:18

Not keen on it I'm afraid. But it's a lot better than some of the names suggested on here.
