Xanthe for a girl...Zebedee for a boy?

what do you think?

DH suggested Zebedee but i think he may have been joking. i like it however.
especially due to the Magic Roundabout connotation.
what would it shorten to?

though it does mean 'gift of god' like so many many other names..

and 'Xanthe'...well 'fair-haired' - all my kids are blondies so far!

Xanthe is lovely, Zebedee I'm not keen on (I picture an annoying bouncing child).

Pandygirl · 26/05/2012 14:00

I imagine you'd shorten to Zeb (which is quite cool)

HandMadeTail · 26/05/2012 14:00

You can't use Xanthe for a girl, because I wish I had called DD1 that and now she's 13 it's too late, and that would not be fair to me. Wink

EggWhiteOmelette · 26/05/2012 14:00

Zebedee is stupid, sorry.

Xanthe is lovely, though.

DoingItForMyself · 26/05/2012 14:01

I did laugh to start with but thinking about it, Zebedee has grown on me! Zeb for short.

This generation will never have heard of the Magic Roundabout (despite recent film re-make/flop) so his friends wouldn't take the mickey, it will only be the parents who might raise an eyebrow. Do it!

confusedpixie · 26/05/2012 14:02

I have a cat called Zebedee. He's huge, pitch black and quite fat. That's all I can think of when I think Zebedee. Zeb is cool though.

Love Xanthe though, it is nice!

5madthings · 26/05/2012 14:16

i used to know a little Zebedee :) he got called Zeb for short, i thought it was unusual but actually it was fine, i also know a Zeb, but not sure if that is short for anything or just his name.

Selks · 26/05/2012 14:19

Xanthe - great
Zebedee - terrible, please don't inflict the poor child with this!

dionysia · 26/05/2012 14:34

a good mix of views!!

my children are annoying and bouncy. it's why it suits...

so an all round yes for Xanthe... (apart from those with regrets!)

scan picture was very indeterminate so probably a girl anyway (my boy was really obvious from the scan)

Yes, Xanthe's lovely too.

Rosa · 26/05/2012 14:41

Sorry don't like either .....

StepOutOfSpring · 26/05/2012 14:50

Both fantastic names :) Zebedee is a classic Biblical name and a refreshing change from Zachary. Magic Roundabout 70s link? All the better!

bronze · 26/05/2012 14:53

I love both

threeleftfeet · 26/05/2012 14:54

Both names are great :)

I know an adult Zebedee and he likes his name AFAIK.

ladymuckbeth · 26/05/2012 14:58

They're the sort of names I would have liked had I met an adult with the name (in fact know a Zeb and it very much suits him). But I have to say that to me they sound like quite try-hard names and are very much of the moment. I knew a Milo at university and thought it was incredibly cool to have such a name, now they're littered everywhere!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/05/2012 15:03

Xanthe doesn't do much for me but is okay. Zebedee is quite ridiculous imho.

Threelittleducks · 26/05/2012 15:08

I think if I heard someone shouting on Zebedee in the playground it would remain a giggleworthy moment for a long time.
Unless of course a huge curly haired standard poodle came bounding up. Then it would be cool.
Xanthe is gorgeous! X

lovemygirlivy · 26/05/2012 15:18

Xanthe is nice, at first i thought Zebedee was odd - but then Zeb is really cool.

Selks · 26/05/2012 17:13

Zebediah instead of Zebedee? Seems a little less silly.

Badgerina · 26/05/2012 17:16

LOVE both. An old school friend's mum is called Xanthe and she's lovely, and Zebedee is flipping awesome! Boooooinggggggg!

treedelivery · 26/05/2012 17:20

I can't really see a 30 year old Zebedee - yes, maybe a bouncy fun toddler but not a young man. All rise for Judge Zebedee Smith-Jones. I'm just not sure I'd want it for a name.

Why not name him Zeb and maybe Zebedee could be your own pet name for him.

Xanthe is nice, although your adult child will not thank you for the trouble she will have with call centres Grin

shoobidoo · 26/05/2012 21:42

Like both but particularly like Zebedee, nickname Zeb. Such a cool name and it is indeed a refreshing change from all the little Zaks/Zacharys around here.

xTonixxx · 26/05/2012 23:43

Xanthe is lovely

Sorry but Zebedee just sounds silly IMO and Zeb sounds equally silly and not at all "cool" IMO.

StrawberryRoan · 27/05/2012 07:11

Xanthe is lovely.

Zebedee is bloody awful.

messagetoyourudy · 27/05/2012 07:18

What about Xanthe and Xander ? Or you could spell it Zander?
