Really big mistake?

Well two actually - when I was pregnant I went out for a meal with three close friends who wanted to discuss my name choices. I love talking names, so happily divulged my first choice - a highly unusual name that I really loved. It went down like a lead balloon, with two of my friends barely disguising their horror/disapproval. I talked it through with dh - who was uncertain whether it would work. Anyway on the day of her birth, dh decided on his own that this unusual name was THE ONE. My friends have been more than a little uncomfortable that we didn't take their advice. (They suggested Florence or Amelia). It's fine now - in that I don't see these friends too often so it's not too awkward. But nearly a year later I do worry a little that I've burdened my dh with a v unusual name. (Dh is happy). I guess it's because the name change deadline is nearly up. I'm not sure I would, more whether I should..... Anyone else wish they'd played it safe? (It's not made up, strangely spelled or anything..)

Blimey. Not sure about that one but luckily my opinion doesn't matter.

DS is called Campbell which was DH's choice but we love it. My very lovely MIL hated it but now says she can't imagine him being called anything else (he's 7!). And DS loves his name. So I think go with what you love, and ignore other people.

I think it's lovely :) And in fact know a girl that instead of the Z has a D and emphasis on the first vowel

My youngest son has an Irish name which is unusual in England, a name that I really love; when he was born, out of all the names on the shortlist, that was the one that just seemed to fit him. My in laws hated it, I've had one or two friends in the past make rude comments (because its not spelt the way it sounds, mainly) but if I'm honest, I think that reflects badly on them and their social skills rather than my choice of name! But the older he has got, the more confident I am that it was the right choice (it really does suit him), and perhaps because I introduce him more confidently, I get very few comments now; if people do look bemused, I explain and move on. He loves his name, loves being the only person he knows with that name, and his friends have never batted on eyelid. Incidentally my in laws now act as though they have always liked the name and never had a problem with it.

I really don't get what's so bad about it? Or that even merits a "blimey"! It sounds nice, is a proper name, and has a lovely meaning (goddess of beauty).

My sis said 'thank god for that' when DH said he was vetoing my name choice for DD. We then used it!

I wonder if your mums hesitation is just because she has to think about the pronounciation?
I only say that because I just said it in my head a few times and wasn't sure if the a was long or short.

My dad ever so slightly mis-pronounced ds2's name for quite a long time.

Glad posting here has made you feel better. It's horrid when people in RL can (by accident) make you feel bad. At least here you get a wider opinion (as in more people) - and the consensus says - lovely name.

I have a friend who has a very unusual name (he's named after the most famous Brazilian footballer, if that helps!). I always wondered whether it bothered him and he always said not. His wife has recently given birth to their first child and they have given him a (different) very unusual name. I take from that, that growing up with an unusual name has been a positive experience for him, because if not he wouldn't have inflicted a bad experience on his own child.

This is why after DS2 I vowed never to reveal baby names before birth. Not that it totally stopped the comments when DS5 was born. No one liked his name. Even DH. (But he didn't come up with anything better so tough.) I love his name!

LMAO - the next time I have a pet whose name I don't need to shout it will be BadgerFelcher.
