Well two actually - when I was pregnant I went out for a meal with three close friends who wanted to discuss my name choices. I love talking names, so happily divulged my first choice - a highly unusual name that I really loved. It went down like a lead balloon, with two of my friends barely disguising their horror/disapproval. I talked it through with dh - who was uncertain whether it would work. Anyway on the day of her birth, dh decided on his own that this unusual name was THE ONE. My friends have been more than a little uncomfortable that we didn't take their advice. (They suggested Florence or Amelia). It's fine now - in that I don't see these friends too often so it's not too awkward. But nearly a year later I do worry a little that I've burdened my dh with a v unusual name. (Dh is happy). I guess it's because the name change deadline is nearly up. I'm not sure I would, more whether I should..... Anyone else wish they'd played it safe? (It's not made up, strangely spelled or anything..)

I think its lovely.

I called my DS something unusual - but not outlandish or with weirdy spelling - and I got lots of funny looks and awkward silences when i revealed the name. Everyone else in my baby group had a Josh, Harry, Oscar or Jake.

Fuck em Grin

Shanghaidiva · 23/04/2012 12:47

Don't change it - (change your friends) - lovely name.

it's lovely! Don't worry about them, they'll get over it.

tunaday · 23/04/2012 15:49

Lovely name. Not weird, embarrassing or anything. I thought it was going to be MoonUnit or something!

Dotty342kids · 23/04/2012 15:53

I really like it too - sod the friends and what they think!

Ephiny · 23/04/2012 15:55

I like it - pretty and unusual, with a lovely meaning. Much better than Florence/Amelia IMO.

deliakate · 23/04/2012 16:30

Not heard of it before.... but its nice

rhibutterfly · 23/04/2012 18:47

love it :)

anniemcphee · 23/04/2012 19:08

I like Lilia. Ignore those "friends"!
My DD has an unusual name, not so out there or spelt oddly, but when we first suggested it we got looks of horror from people - including MIL (although that was a bit of a bonus IMO as her choices were awful!).
Now all my friends say they couldn't imagine her being called anything else as it really suits her.

With DS all my unusual suggestions were put down by friends and I stupidly listened and settled for a very common name, and used the unusual one as a middle name, and I regret it.
Stick to your guns if you like it. :)

ewaczarlie · 23/04/2012 19:13

That's a gorgeous name don't even think about changing it. Just remember how many charismatic women have unusual names. Also my name is considered unusual here (1st 3 letters of nick) and most people pronounce it wrong but I don't care, I just correct them and enjoy being more memorable because of the 'unusual' name

Kaekae · 24/04/2012 01:33

Don't worry about what others think, I really like the name Monty told a group of friends and one shouted out really loudly "Oh no that is horrendous" Sod her, I don't like her children's dull names so I won't be letting her put me off.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 24/04/2012 13:37

Is the first part Zar or Zah? either way I really it!

Tessa617 · 25/04/2012 03:19

I like it - any name with a Z is just great. People feel the need to tell you their opinions about names. I have learned to button my lip (while pregnant I do not tell anyone our names except one friend who is a preschool teacher and has heard A LOT of names; when friends tell me their possible names I do not shoot them down). After DS was BORN and NAMED my mother started suggesting other names we could have used. I found this incredibly hurtful and still havent really gotten over it. And neither has my mother: he is nearly 2 and she just calls him The Boy. Not kidding.

Frikadellen · 25/04/2012 08:32

Oh wow Dont change that it is BEAUTIFUL. We named ds Conrad and people have extreme reactions to that (I have learnt it is a marmite name) He is now 10 and he is SUCH a Conrad I cant imagine him being anything else.

Thankfully inlaws were polite (mil loves it) my mother said OMG THATS HORRIBLE. geesh tnx mum you named your son Helmut so I dont think you can comment..

welovesausagedogs · 25/04/2012 22:52

I think it's a really name and isn't strange in the slightest, it's a proper name i though you were going to say some made up name of something.

Not any weirder than Daria or Azaria

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 25/04/2012 23:40

Being perfectly honest, I don't like it. However, if people only used the names I liked we'd all need long numbers after our names Grin I certainly don't think it's horrible or embarassing or anything anywhere near as strong as that! I hear a lot of 'stranger' names that that on a daily basis!!

pictish · 25/04/2012 23:44

Nothing wrong with it! Your friends are being a bit weird to be honest. I can't see how anyone could actually balk at it.
It's fine and very inoffensive.
It's pleasant.

Glenshee · 25/04/2012 23:57

Great name! It has a beautiful rich meaning, and is very popular in Eastern Europe, yet easily pronounceable in English. Not weird at all, quite the opposite. I love it.

CheerfulYank · 26/04/2012 02:44

I think it's pretty! I'm a little unsure of the pronunciation because here in the US Maria is "Mah-ree-uh" and it's "Mah-ry-uh" there, isn't it?

Still lovely. I knew a little girl called that minus the "i" and she was a sweetie. :)

mathanxiety · 26/04/2012 02:51

Beautiful name and well done for sticking to your guns.

If your friends want to name babies they should have their own.

TinkerMaloo · 26/04/2012 14:21

she did! look to her last post... and i like it :)

Novascotia33 · 27/04/2012 22:08

I think it's a great name, and not that off the wall at all, I thought you were going to come up with some completely madeup crack-a-jack thing!

Maybe you just need to change your conformist friends baby!

Go with your heart, it's beautiful, I'd love it if I was called that, I think in 15 years she's going to be totally thanking you.

MissCeliaFoote · 27/04/2012 23:45

I think that's a great name and I am now actually jealous of it and wish it was my name! Your friends however are clearly a bit mad.
My grandmother wanted to call me Apricot when I was born and was very affronted when my mum refused! Now, that's weird.

SundayNightFever · 28/04/2012 22:35

Gorgeous name, really lovely. I'm normally one for very traditional names, but this would sway me, its fab.
