What do you think of Lux?

I love it and so does my DH. We had a family friend that we were very close to called Lux and she died recently and we'd like to use the name but have no idea what other peoples reactions would be. She was the only Lux I'd ever met so I assume it isn't a popular name.

I know it was a character name in Virgin Suicides which doesn't bother me, I like the film. There was a detergent called Lux too, but I doubt many under 20 years old would have ever heard of it now so don't think that would be a problem when baby is older if you see what I mean.

Lux is Yucks. Oh fucks.

charlottery · 15/04/2012 19:18

First thing I thought of was light - I like it

Alltheseboys · 15/04/2012 19:37

The name is special to you & you both agree. You can't make the decision on other peoples opinions that don't know it's significance.

Alltheseboys · 15/04/2012 19:38

MagsaloofHmm

Lux soap is still readily available if you google (lots of shopping site hits, some from high street retailers). And I've just had a nostalgic moment with some ads which are on YouTube.

Lux soap flakes vanished a little while ago (think DriPak had squeezed them out), but in their daythey were such a synonym of soap flakes you find references in all sorts of household books.

DaSmallPunsMum · 15/04/2012 20:33

No one is going to remember the soap?! That comment in itself is ridiculous!

submarine · 15/04/2012 20:37

My first thought is the washing powder my mum used when we had a twin tub!! I can still remember how the flakes flet and the smell, my second thought is the unit of brightness.

I hope this is a wind up! it would be like calling your child persil or metre.

No no no

TV show called Life Unexpected. Main character is called Lux.

www.imdb.com/title/tt1442109/

exoticfruits · 15/04/2012 22:24

Washing powder-don't do it!

DaSmallPunsMum · 15/04/2012 23:42

Oh my god these comments are making me furious! I'm in my twenties and don't remember Lux soap at all. It's only old biddies who will think that, not the new generation which your child is entering into.

upahill · 15/04/2012 23:49

First thing I thought was Lux Interior but that was a stage name and he is dead anyway.
The next thing was the rhyming thing Lux fucks and all that!! Taunts do happen in the playground and that is an obvious one.
But guess it will toughen him up if you go for it.

Personally I wouldn't but your call!

upahill · 15/04/2012 23:56

A bit of an overreaction DaSmall getting Furious?

Bunbaker · 16/04/2012 06:36

"I'm in my twenties and don't remember Lux soap at all. It's only old biddies who will think that"

There are a lot of us old biddies about, so the word Lux will mean soap to us. Live with it.

exoticfruits · 16/04/2012 06:49

People would be as well to take note-I agree that there are a lot of 'us old biddies' about and we will still be here when the new generation are here-thinking 'why call her after a washing product!'
Having googled I see that you can still buy it anyway-and not just old biddies.

Bucharest · 16/04/2012 06:52

I would think a) soap b)Fiat Lux (let there be light) c) that you'd spelled Luz wrong.

Either way I'd giggle in a Wtf way.

squoosh · 16/04/2012 10:33

Bit odd to get furious because people associate the name with a brand. It is a brand name, deal with it.

Never met a person called Lux, met lots of bars of soap called Lux.

scottishmummy · 16/04/2012 10:49

lux I'd think light measurement,illuminances
and soap
or slang for luxury items...pure dead lux maaaaan

so for all this reasons....no

LydiaWickham · 16/04/2012 14:53

DaSmall - that's why this topic is good, in real life, most people wouldn't be brave enough to say to a pregnant woman "Lux, like the soap?" they'd say "oh that's nice." and think "WTF, she's naming her child after a brand of soap." Then the child has to live with being named after a brand of soap, who's peers might be too young to remember, but who's peers' parents and first boss probably won't be. It only takes one person's parent to say "like the soap" to a school friend.

If you are going to give your DC an unusual name with teasing potential it's best to be forwarned so you can plan for it or just not give your DC a name that lends itself to teasing better that than be surprised by it later.

rebecklet · 16/04/2012 15:02

I instantly though shower gel.

Then I tried to think of other names with soap connotations and all I could come up with was Daz - which I think is even worse.

rebecklet · 16/04/2012 15:03

Should be thought

squoosh · 16/04/2012 15:38

Rebecklet . I loved the Lux shower gels that were out about 5 years ago. Was annoyed when they took them off the market.

Not great if they ever move to New Zealand where I think Lux means "hoover" as in - "I need to Lux this room". Lux is the equivalent of Hoover there.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 16/04/2012 23:20

Soap.

And if she said it to people on the phone they would think "Looks?".
