What do you think of Lux?

I love it and so does my DH. We had a family friend that we were very close to called Lux and she died recently and we'd like to use the name but have no idea what other peoples reactions would be. She was the only Lux I'd ever met so I assume it isn't a popular name.

I know it was a character name in Virgin Suicides which doesn't bother me, I like the film. There was a detergent called Lux too, but I doubt many under 20 years old would have ever heard of it now so don't think that would be a problem when baby is older if you see what I mean.

I thought of a cinema. And then soap.

And a geek

(as in, I'm the geek, for associatingit with other units of measurement)

In real life the few people I have asked have all first associated with Virgin Suicides, surprised that on here more have said soap.

Soap, totally soap. If you went on Family Fortunes and had to answer the question "We asked 100 people to name a brand of soap" it would be in the top three I'd guess! I'd go Lux, Palmolive, Pears.

Why would you only think about what people under 20 think about the name? Most of the world is over 20 .

GymBunny, now I'm imagining your friend Lux meeting Biker Lux in the afterlife! I'm warming to Lux as a name - and the association with light is lovely.

Margo Because I don't expect people who are currently adults to be teasing my future DD in school when she is older. I think that for children her own age soap won't spring to mind so its unlikely that it would be a big teasing issue.

Thanks Blue. She'd love to meet a biker or two I'm sure, maybe they could finally teach her some balance. Riding a bike, staying on a horse and standing on a ladder were all things that foxed her!

It makes me think of Luxembourg. Lux is the short hand for it, it's the airport 'tag' (don't know what those 3 letter codes for airports are called).

could it be short for something? (other than the small tax haven principality in Europe)

FGS it is a brand of soap. You wouldn't called your child Radox or Dove would you? I am only 29 but I know the brand well so it must have been sold more recently than in the last 20 years.

Sorry, but I don't find it a very attractive name in itself.

It's part of too many other things, as well - advertising etc. I mean it's short for luxury, so there's that connotation, it sounds like a nickname, it's very abrupt, and it does (sorry) make me think of the sort of made up names people who take too many drugs give each other.

I just think you could give a child so much more than these three letters.

Lux to me immediately says Jewish surname.

I don't think that the people that "Lux" will be growing up with would associate her name with soap, just as they would associate Ariel with the Little Mermaid before thinking of the washing powder.

Flighty is right - it does rhyme with lots of things, but that shouldn't be enough reason to not use the name.

Lux Aeterna is part of the Requiem Mass. I think the idea of naming someone after 'light' is nice, as all the connotations of 'light' are positive, uplifting, joyful, etc, and a lovely way to remember your friend.

Having said that, I'd probably use it as a middle name just because of all the other connotations, or choose Lucy/Lucia which are equally nice & could use Lux as a nn.

I love the name Lux. Wanted it for DS3, in fact I think it even featured on a thread on here about 2 years ago, alongside Beamish, Humphrey, Monty, Clovis and Helix. I think I like names with xs in, as I was determined that DS1 (Alexander) would be abbreviated to Lex.

I'd always thought of it as a boys' name, but go for it. There's always something that rhymes with a name, or that is a similar brand name or whatever. But it means 'light' in Latin, and that's enough.

Not if it were a pretty name. I'm sorry - yes, it's a decent nickname but for me, when I name a child I like to give them a bit of flexibility, a name is a gift - so a proper first name they can shorten if they like, loads of nicknames of course (who doesn't call their child a whole bunch of silly shortenings and so on) and a middle name that's a bit different, so depending on their own taste they can play around with it all.

Giving a child a three letter, very unusual name which leaves no scope for alteration/individual preference is somehow a little ungenerous, I feel. But we are all different and if you realy love the name, it's still a gift from you, and your child might love it.

I speak as someone who gave their child an unusual first name, which I now almost regret, but the child refuses to depart from even though he has several other options, including a very ordinary middle name and I've even offered to change it for him officially if he likes. Nope. He likes it just as it is.

So really just analysing my own feelings, you must do what you feel is right.

I think Jo Whiley has a daughter called Lux. (Don't ask me why I remember this crap :))

It's a bit of a nothing name to me, it sounds like an abbreviation and doesn't haven't have enough oomph for a full name.

Having said that, it could be worse. Ending on a positive!

I like it - unusual and with a lovely meaning.

My first thought was the character from the film, then the unit of light - I haven't heard of a brand of soap called this.

You could always use it as a middle name, if you feel it doesn't work for the first name, but still want to pass on your friend's name/memory in this way.
