Is Poppy a cat's name?

Me and my husband both really like Poppy (for a gilr) but I feel it's a cat name. Also although I can imagine a small child called Poppy and an old lady called Poppy, I'm not sure I can picture a 30 year old Poppy. Quick opinions so I can cross it off or move it to the top of the list.

I know two cats called Poppy.

Poppy is a lovely name, lots of people call their pets names, doesn't mean their just for pets though. One of our friends had 4 sons so decided to call their female dog the name they would of used if they had had a daughter. Just go for it if you like it then thats the main thing. And when she's 40 everyone will have names like Rosie, Poppy, Archie, Lottie, Isabel etc so it won't seem weird at all. My accountant is a Poppy and it suits her well.

I'm a 26-year-old Poppy and I'm not embarrassed by it at all, I love it.

Sweetiepetal · 29/02/2012 16:20

I love the name Poppy, but my husband said noSad

iloveberries · 29/02/2012 17:05

love it for all ages!

I did have a cat called Poppy... Also had one called Becky though, and I know lots of grown up Beckys!

Can I suggest Polly as an alternative if you want something slightly less cutesy?

Miaow. As in, yes.

I hear 'Poppy' shouted a lot on Hampstead Heath, and either a labrador or a toddler can respond. Grin. However, I wouldn't in the least let that stop you if you like it - I don't think names (other than Fido, Puss and the like) can be pigeonholed as 'animal' or 'human' names. Our baby to be will have the same middle name as one of my parents' cats - no doubt they will find this hilarious, but it's actually a nice Irish name, with a lovely meaning and myth attached, and to be perfectly honest I've no intention of not going with a name I like because it has feline associations for someone else!

mimimomma · 02/03/2012 06:25

It's lovely, move it to the top of your list. Remember that when Poppy is a high court judge her colleagues will be Archie, Alfie, Molly and Milly :)

My brother's dog was Poppy.

Too babyish and cutesy for many people's taste. Sounds like 'puppy' too much for my liking.

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/03/2012 09:33

It's my Whippet's name and also the name of dd1's friend's Gran's Springer puppy.

They're both very sweet dogs if that makes a difference?

Kaekae · 02/03/2012 17:43

Why will the name be embarrassing for a bank manager? What a silly comment.

My parents dog is called Ben and a friends dog is called Frank.

abbypumpkin · 06/03/2012 14:12

I don't like it personally but think it's cute and nice for a girly little girl with pig tails and a flowery dress but I don't think it works on a teenager/adult or even a little one who's a tom boy

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 07/03/2012 05:00

Wouldn't have thought of it as a cat name but it IS extremely cutesy and a bit naff, in my opinion.

Poppy is very punchy and snazzy and it will be fine on a 30yr old. Have you ever met a 30yr and thought oh she/he has a little girl/boys name?

In 30yrs all the flower names will have been around forever and seem very normal.

I think Poppy is a beautiful name.

bouquetofpencils · 08/04/2014 21:51

(And in my opinion Poppy is a very silly name for a pet. Pets should be called Rover or Snowy or Pickle but not a real name. And before people start saying Poppy is not a real name, it has been in usage since at least the 1920s).

Cinderelephant · 08/04/2014 21:54

I used to have a cat called Poppy but I still think that it is a great name for a person.

Gugglebum · 09/04/2014 03:17

When asking her 5 boys their ideas for names for their coming sister, my friend's 6 year old suggested "Pickles the Devastator 9000“. That is not her given name. Smile But she is called Pickles more often than her first name. Names and preferences related to them are largely subjective. Just because some people name a cat something doesn't make that name forever a cat name. Use your best judgement. Choose something you love that is fitting for YOUR baby. You will absolutely not please everyone. Your child will appreciate having a name with meaning to you, that you absolutely love.
