Is Poppy a cat's name?

Me and my husband both really like Poppy (for a gilr) but I feel it's a cat name. Also although I can imagine a small child called Poppy and an old lady called Poppy, I'm not sure I can picture a 30 year old Poppy. Quick opinions so I can cross it off or move it to the top of the list.

Lots of cats/guinea pigs are called Poppy because it is so cute and affectionate, like poppet.
Personally I don't like it for a person as it is too cutesy and just one letter away from Poopy.

Poppy is one of the best names in the world. Ask our calico cat: //www.talkigy.com/chat/poppy-cat

Megrim my Poppy is named after the eponymous heroine of Mary Wesley's "The Vacillations of Poppy Carew". In the book, Poppy's full name is Poppaea, and she was named after a racehorse that her dad had bet on Smile

(I read the book when I was about 15/16, had never heard Poppy as a name before, and that was that - firstborn daughter named on the spot, lol.)

I want to like the name Poppy, I really do, but I can't help but think Poopy Poppy every time I hear it Blush

I had a guinea pig as a teenager called Poppy who was nicknamed Poopy Poppy because she pooped so much. Now that's all I think of when I hear the name.

I know a Poppaea, Poppy for short.

Poppaea Sabina was a Roman empress, second wife of Nero.

My sister is a 28 year old Poppy. She is also an oxford graduate, an MA and works for one of the big museums whilst studying for her phd.
I couldn't imagine her being called anything else and she is the least 'cutesy'person I know . And she certainly isn't a cat!
Most names cousin be used for a cat/dog anyway. Oliver is hugely popular and I know 3 Oliver cats....

I think it's lovely

I've always associated it with dogs rather than cats. Didn't stop me using it for a daughter though! Who is a teenager and nearly an adult, and her name still works perfectly on her (phew! Wink )

And angry there are other shortenings of Matilda than Tilly if you did use it ...

I don't think it is a good cats name.

I like the name Poppy and know a gorgeous 1 year old called Poppy. However I do think a Poppy should have a very sunny disposition and that would put me off!

Oh Angry that's a shame. Could you not consider putting Matilda back on the list? It's a lovely name.

I have a poppy. No one ever says this to me and I never thought it! It's lovely

I have a Poppy, she really suits it and I'm pretty sure she's the only one in her school of about 200 kids.
I hate it when people tell me they have a dog/cat called what my children are called, what am I supposed to say to that?!
I'm pregnant with dc 4 and I really liked Matilda (I know it's very popular there but I don't live in UK) until I heard someone on the boat to the mainland call their dog "Tilly".
It's off the list now!

Many names are used for humans and pets.

The only girls name I have real trouble with is Tabitha. The tab bit does make me think of tabby cats.

No! It's a perfectly reasonable human name. Just as Amy and Chloe are (they were also sister kittens of DMILs)

When asking her 5 boys their ideas for names for their coming sister, my friend's 6 year old suggested "Pickles the Devastator 9000“. That is not her given name. Smile But she is called Pickles more often than her first name. Names and preferences related to them are largely subjective. Just because some people name a cat something doesn't make that name forever a cat name. Use your best judgement. Choose something you love that is fitting for YOUR baby. You will absolutely not please everyone. Your child will appreciate having a name with meaning to you, that you absolutely love.

I used to have a cat called Poppy but I still think that it is a great name for a person.

(And in my opinion Poppy is a very silly name for a pet. Pets should be called Rover or Snowy or Pickle but not a real name. And before people start saying Poppy is not a real name, it has been in usage since at least the 1920s).

Poppy is very punchy and snazzy and it will be fine on a 30yr old. Have you ever met a 30yr and thought oh she/he has a little girl/boys name?

In 30yrs all the flower names will have been around forever and seem very normal.

I think Poppy is a beautiful name.
