Is Poppy a cat's name?

Me and my husband both really like Poppy (for a gilr) but I feel it's a cat name. Also although I can imagine a small child called Poppy and an old lady called Poppy, I'm not sure I can picture a 30 year old Poppy. Quick opinions so I can cross it off or move it to the top of the list.

It was my rabbit's name.
But I do think it's lovely for a girl too. IMO the names of animals and people have crossed over and lots of names are fine for both. Smile

My cat was called Poppy.

Thanks all, will have to see if she looks a bit cat like when born. If she is this will make DS very happy as he likes cats but has yet to express opinion on baby sisters.

my friend called her DD Poppy but my in laws have a dog called Poppy as have the people next door. I agree the people and animal names have crossed over.

Poppy is a dog's name (I know at least 5), but it's also a nice name for a baby.

I know a Poppy in her 40's. Im not sure if its her given name or a nickname. She is indian and very beautiful and exotic looking so i think of it as a beautiful name.

Poppy is a lovely name, and doesn't remind me of cats at all.

Tabitha on the other hand makes me think of cats straight away.

Poppy is the best girls name in the world Grin. Although, it has to be said, I may be slightly biased Grin.

If I were you, I'd go with the opinions of those who have already replied before someone comes along to berate you for even considering such a name as a Poppy could never be a barrister or High Court Judge Angry.

Too cutesy for a girl/woman imo so yes, to me it is better suited to a cat or dog.

I am going to try to put you off Grin as I have a Poppy and the name is becoming annoyingly popular!! She gets lots of nice compliments about her name but I was in the park last week, called out to my DD and a guy walking towards me with his dog felt the need to inform me his dog was also called Poppy! I must say I used to have a solicitor called Poppy I thought it suited her well so I have no worries about the name suiting my DD when she's older.

He was a great cat though, miserable sod!

I have chosen Rex as my boy's name ( still don't know what were having ) and most people have said ' oh thats a dogs name etc ' but i love it, so Rex it will be!
If you love the name OP then just use it.

I have known a couple of people called Poppy, also one cat and one enormous Doberman dog.

Just so long as you don't pass over Poppy in favour of Fido or Tiddles...

i love the name poppy, it's on my shortlist. i've also seen women in their late twenties/early thirties with the name poppy so don't think it's a name that won't grow with her. and if she really hates it that's what middle names are for.

Our cat was called Poppy too. It's a bit cutsie for me, I'd prefer it as a nn for something more formal (but then I don't really like names that don't have at least two alternative forms)

The consensus seems to be that it is, indeed, a pet's name.

I've never liked it myself. I can't get past the "pop" part.

Doesn't translate well at all to adulthood. Fine for a toddler embarrassing for a bank manager. Go with your instincts and pick something else.

Not sure if it is necessarily a cat's name but it certainly a very 'cutesy' name that sounds very childish to my ears. It also sounds silly in other languages imo. It is like calling a child poppet imo.
