Oh, don't like Ethel AT ALL. Not that it's any of my business of course. But...Eeeew.

katkitya · 17/12/2011 20:07

It's refreshing that she's keeping it private and enjoying the first few weeks in peace. I don't think she will be doing the cover of Hello anytime soon!

Ethel is utterly hideous.

RainboweBrite · 17/12/2011 23:58

Have to admit I am not a fan of Ethel either.. As an Irish Catholic in my early 30s, very used to Mary as a middle name!

suzydelarosa · 20/12/2011 19:48

gads, Ethel isn't good. When I was young there was an elderly lady at my church named Ethelene... kid you not... sounds like some kind of petrol that you put in your truck! nice one.

JollySantaJackrum · 22/12/2011 23:20

I'm sure the nasty girl in the Worst Witch books was called Ethel... I think it's not a true rumour.

bundle · 26/12/2011 12:16

I hope it is Ethel, gorgeous name

Arwhen · 29/12/2011 13:52

Have they still not announced it then?

smother · 03/01/2012 12:45

grrrrr.... does anyone know whether the name has been confirmed yet? I need to know and getting impatient!

Angry
serendipity16 · 04/01/2012 10:14

I've just seen parentdish.co.uk on facebook confirm that this is the name Lily Allen has named her baby.

Ifancyashandy · 04/01/2012 10:25

Ethel is ok -pretty but there are prettier. Ettie is lovely NN. Glad it's not Edith. Now, that's horrid!

Mooja · 04/01/2012 10:29

Yep, Daily Fail today - Ethel Mary.

It's an interesting choice, I was all yuck at first, but it's kind of growing on me. I doubt they're calling her Ethel, maybe they call her Effie or something similar.
Couldn't imagine actually calling a tiny baby Ethel whilst speaking to her.

Sidge · 04/01/2012 10:32

Ethel is a terrible name.

Round here she'd be Effel Grin

3boysgirlontheway · 04/01/2012 11:07

I like it, I wonder will there be lots of Ethel's now?

smother · 04/01/2012 11:08

wow, it's been confirmed then.
I think Effie or Ettie are v sweet. Mary is lovely too.

The reactions to Ethel on here suggest that it's still seen as an ugly/dowdy old lady name... perhaps they used such a name to avoid 100s of babies being born with the same name as theirs in the next couple of years.... or perhaps we're all suckers and there will be 100s of Ethels.....

fergoose · 04/01/2012 11:22

I really like it - very surprised only 3 babies given that name last year.

Sidge · 04/01/2012 11:36

fergoose there's a reason for that I think!

MackerelOfFact · 04/01/2012 11:57

Strange choice - it's like they've decided to go for old-lady chic and figured that the more old-lady the name is, the more chic it must be. So they've gone for the most cliched old-lady name there is.

Etheldra is quite pretty, as is Ettie. But Ethel just sounds bit like the name of a chicken to me.

Congratulations to them though, I guess part of the reason they didn't announce the name was so that people didn't pick it apart and criticise it.

suzikettles · 04/01/2012 12:05

I always think of Ethel as a pig's name (must have been in a book I read once - does Ethel in the Worst Witch get turned into a pig?), but if you ignore your prejudices then Ethel is actually a nice sounding name.

I know an Edith and didn't much fancy the name before I met her, but she's so lovely that I now think it's a great name. I'm sure Ethel will be the same.

Now Senga is irredeemably awful. Hopefully that'll stay with the maiden great, great aunts where it belongs.

TartyMcFarty · 04/01/2012 13:19

I adore the name. I'm really onto old lady names - if I ever have another DD I'll be considering Dorothy Smile

UrsulaTurkeyCurryBuffay · 04/01/2012 15:03

How the frig did she get her DH to agree to Ethel? I am disappointed but happy for her she has her baby here safely.

Rufus Hound's baby is called Hilda. We are obv vey vey behind.

smother · 04/01/2012 15:11

what i'm wondering is how gallicgirl guessed so early on? look at top of thread.... she voted Ethel way back then..... Hmm

icapturethecastle · 04/01/2012 19:23

Maybe gallicgirl is lily Grin. If I read Ethel without any association I would say what a pretty medieval sounding name but really all I can think of is Ethel from Eastenders. Should open a book on how many there will be on the list next year. Anyway very pleased for them - I have always liked Lily.

telsa · 04/01/2012 23:41

Enid, Nora and Doris will be the next big names then, I guess.
