I think Ethel isn't bad. And Mary as a middle name is a real alternative should she ever be unhappy with it. Lucky celebrity baby not to be called Banana Frufrubelle Eighteen or something...

Marinn · 13/12/2011 23:03

Is lovely she has a healthy baby and congrats.

The name though! Ethel! Wow I can't come up with much worse honestly.

tummytickler · 14/12/2011 09:27

Ethel is gorgeous. It does mean it will have to come off my list now though Xmas Sad
Ethel Mary is stunning imo.

pictish · 14/12/2011 09:28

Ethel - yuck! How contrived!

ThatVikRinA22 · 14/12/2011 13:43

ethel is just such an ugly name - i cant imagine a baby ethel. its horrible. each to their own though i guess, but can you imagine being 20 and being called Ethel?
I think you'd need your bumps read.

god its just awful.

if she wanted an old lady name there are other, classic but beautiful names.

TheOriginalFAB · 14/12/2011 13:50

Maybe Lily and Sam have named their baby after a relative..

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 14/12/2011 13:51

Eww I don't care for the name Ethel. S'not easy to say either is it? Especially when you're six and losing your front teeth.

CeliaDeBohun · 14/12/2011 14:28

It's not that bad. There are worse 'old lady' names out there. Doris and Gertrude spring to mind. Ethel at least comes with the cute nickname Ettie. Although having said that, my nan's given name was Doris and she was nicknamed Dolly, which is quite sweet imo.

AwayinaKayzr · 14/12/2011 14:35

I'm not keen on Ethel but I'm really pleased for Lily Allen after she's been through the lose of 2 babies.

minciepie · 14/12/2011 18:01

Ah, Ethel - guess who's been watching Downton Abbey then Grin

minciepie · 14/12/2011 18:02

In fact just realised it's Ethel Mary! Even more Downton...

Congrats to them. Ethel is sort of hard sounding but it may be a grower, think of the wave of names which a couple of years ago would have been unpalatable but are now on trend.

katkitya · 15/12/2011 11:39

I love Mary, not keen on Ethel. Is it official then? I actually love Doris, I would use Dot.

MamaLazarou · 15/12/2011 14:59

Ethel is just about the most hideous name I can imagine. Poor child.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 15/12/2011 15:19

I don't get it. I thought Lily Allen would be a bit of a trendsetter but she's gone old lady. Old lady names are everywhere now!

katkitya · 15/12/2011 19:48

Is it official?

guinealady · 15/12/2011 20:23

I could imagine shortening Ethel to Ettie or Effie and that would be quite sweet, but the name itself is hard work. Edith is much nicer.

Mary is no-nonsense, down to earth and a classic. No issues with that!

smother · 15/12/2011 22:35

Isn't this just a rumour?

I think names have a habit of being disliked/shocking at first and then growing on people... like Daphne, Agnes, Nancy...

smother · 15/12/2011 22:36

oooh, and Mabel.

MamaLazarou · 17/12/2011 14:55

I met a baby Mabel the other day. I just about managed to contain my laughter.

What has happened here is that certain old-lady names (Rose, Lily &c) have become fashionable, and some people have tried to be one step ahead by choosing granny names that haven't yet become popular. The trouble is that these names are unpopular for a reason - they are hideous. Daphne and Nancy have an old-fashioned glamour to them. Ethel is just an old bag's name.

Luminescence · 17/12/2011 15:06

Mabel is lovely.

fergoose · 17/12/2011 15:09

My grandmothers were called Ethel and Mabel - lovely names in my opinion, and I quite like the older, more traditional names, but maybe I am biased.

MamaLazarou · 17/12/2011 15:09

For a Victorian parlourmaid, yes.

ViolaCrayola · 17/12/2011 15:23

Not very keen on Ethel but Mabel is lovely. And actually the sound of Ethel is quite nice in a way...
