I'm trying to get an idea of how the name Jasper is seen. Various opinions I've come across are:
-posh but in a nice way
-posh but not in a good way
-lovely quirky classic
-a 'joke'/ cat's name
Please share your thoughts with me!

I know one Jasper - 13-year-old from an arty/media/outdoorsy sort of family - wouldn't call them really posh, possibly quirky. I think it's a nice name.

JaxTellersOldLady · 31/03/2011 10:43

well the only Jasper that I knew was a hulking big German Shepherd Dog!

And that name will always be associated with a dog for me.

WalterFlipsticks · 31/03/2011 10:46

My cat was called Jasper.... BUT I really do like it for a human name too, it's lovely

springissprung · 31/03/2011 10:48

Does it sound like a 'real' name - i.e. does it sound bit jokey to you in a way that the name Barney always does to me!

A few years ago a little boy called Jasper and his family moved close to where I live. At first I was quite surprised and not overly keen on the name. But it's definately grown on me, he's cheeky and it suits him.

Tuschinski · 31/03/2011 10:59

Ok if you are posh a bit pretentious otherwise.

SenoritaViva · 31/03/2011 11:01

It is my brother's name and so I love it. I am also a bit 'posh' as others have identified here!

That said, we moved a few times when I was younger and every time we did our new neighbours had an animal called Japser. He hated it therefore as a child but loves it now.

I believe it is becoming quite popular now.

TeamLemon · 31/03/2011 11:03

I know;
One human (posh) Jasper.
One vampire Jasper (Twilight)
Three canine Jaspers
Two feline Jaspers

Hedwig3 · 31/03/2011 11:11

Perfectly 'normal'

LadyGoneGaga · 31/03/2011 12:22

But a Jasper is a wasp?

MamaLazarou · 31/03/2011 12:31

A wasp, yes, or a silly cat name.

Sorry. I met a real life baby Jasper recently and just about managed to stifle laughter.

marge2 · 31/03/2011 12:35

I only know one Jasper and he is posh in a nice way.

MadreInglese · 31/03/2011 12:37

I know of three Jaspers:

one is a gorgeous little blonde boy
one is a doolally black labrador
one is a fictional hunky vampire

moogdroog · 31/03/2011 13:52

I've known just one human Jasper, a much-missed old friend of the family, a fantastic character, an eccentric and a proper old hippy.

I've known several cat Jaspers over the years, but I think it's too good a name to be just for the cats - go for it!

Iklboo · 31/03/2011 13:54

I knew a very lovely Irish Setter called Jasper. He used to run up & greet me every night when I was on my way home from school.

cumbria81 · 31/03/2011 13:56

I don't think I could possibly bring myself to sleep with anyone called Jasper if that helps

MadreInglese · 31/03/2011 13:58

although the (currently childless) owners of Jasper the dog have expressed regret at using the name as they now quite like it for a future son's name

MamaLazarou · 31/03/2011 14:01

I too would never shag a jasper.

BikeRunSki · 31/03/2011 14:12

A bit posh, arty, bohemian.
Nice.
Wears Boden for scruffs.
Family probably have some land.
But all in a very hippy way.

IslaValargeone · 31/03/2011 14:26

It's lovely, and I see it as the name of the type of man I'd like my daughter to marry :o

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 31/03/2011 14:29

My DSs is a Jasper. We're not posh in the slightest and he's a very funny, down to earth, happy little soul and it suits him well.

mothermirth · 31/03/2011 14:31

The best boy's name I could find when naming my DS. He loves his name and he's the only one in his school. It's easy to spell, never forgotten and suits my sweet, mischievous boy.

Can she wait a few years IslaValargeone? Grin

mothermirth · 31/03/2011 14:31

Great minds BigHairyLeggedSpider Smile

mothermirth · 31/03/2011 14:32

LadyWellian · 31/03/2011 14:33

I had a friend called Jasper at college. He was a bit posh but not overwhelmingly so.

It was around the time my nephew was born and they were trying to think of a name - I suggested Jasper among others but his dad said if he had a son called Jasper he would want to hit him over the head with a frying pan. (It's a wasp thing - definitely do not call your DS Jasper if you live in the SW).

I also know one little Jasper. Plus the hunky vampire one. No cats or dogs.

I think it's a nice name.
