What do you think of Scout?!

I love it but I am aware it could be considered a bit of a pet's name. Thoughts please, I have decided that I should have decided on all my favourite names before I got pregnant so I know if I genuinely like them or whether my hormones make names seem nicer than they are!

Scout for a girl as in To Kill A Mockingbird? Brave. I dunno really. I love the character but it's a lot to saddle a small child with.

Scout for a boy is just odd, sorry. It's a noun or a verb, not a name. It's like calling your child Brownie.

I didn't think "pet", I thought of the boy scouts. Not keen on it as a human name.

Cute Smile

ShowOfHands · 14/02/2011 12:23

I think it's lovely. Smile

BuntyPenfold · 14/02/2011 12:32

As in TKAM - lovely.
As in Baden P - not great.

I suppose it all depends on your associations.

SueWhite · 14/02/2011 12:34

Awful.

It's a dog's name.

seeker · 14/02/2011 12:35

The girl in TKAM wasn't actually called Scout - it was a nickname.

ongakgak · 14/02/2011 12:36

Like it, but it does make me think it is not a "proper" name. As if they would need a more traditional full name which Scout was a nn for? Demi Moore has a Scout. I also knew a Scout and she was rough as guts, her sister was Chloe. Go figure.

seeker · 14/02/2011 12:40

It IS a nickname!

TubbyDuffs · 14/02/2011 12:43

I'm with SueWhite, definitely a dog's name

GrimmaTheNome · 14/02/2011 12:47

Dog or nickname.

The other literary 'Scout' is the Little Scout in Gene Stratton Porter's 'The Keeper of the Bees' - a child whose gender is not revealed till the end of the story hence goes by this nickname

MackerelOfFact · 14/02/2011 12:49

Horrible, sorry. TKAM Scout was a nickname, I'm sure, and it just has odd connotations - Boy Scout, Talent Scout etc.

seeker · 14/02/2011 12:52

The TKAM Scout was really called Jean.

Our dog's name is Scout, but her pedigree name is Jean Louise.

BuntyPenfold · 14/02/2011 13:04

That's really sweet.

Glamour · 14/02/2011 13:51

girlfromdownsouth · 14/02/2011 13:55

Ugh - far too celebrity trendy (think Demi Moore)

IngridFletcher · 14/02/2011 13:57

Why not call her Jean?

Imagine a non-cute 40 year old called Scout.
