What do you think of Scout?!

I love it but I am aware it could be considered a bit of a pet's name. Thoughts please, I have decided that I should have decided on all my favourite names before I got pregnant so I know if I genuinely like them or whether my hormones make names seem nicer than they are!

Thanks for all the opinions. I can't imagine a 40-year-old Scout but I love the name Scout and both DP and I love TKAM and I want a name that means something to us.

Hate Jean unfortunately. It would definitely be for a girl not a boy.

Lockets - I'm really surprised you know two Scouts and Kitty Scout is a lovely name. You never know, she might end up using Scout instead!

Kitty Scout? It sounds like someone who looks for stray cats.

reddaisy · 14/02/2011 14:37

Fifth baby?! This is just my second and already I am struggling! DD1 was easy but we never did decide on a boys name for her so it was lucky she was a girl.

There are so many names I quite like but none I am sure sound like one of my children's name IYSWIM.

I knew Demi Moore had one, I didn't know about Mackenzie Crook having a Scout too.

Atticus would be cool but I know I'm not brave enough for that!

They haven't got a Boo have they?!

QuestionNumber, that is actually a poster's childs name so there was no need to post something rude about it.

It is not like she is asking opinions about that name. Scout is the name being debated.

Oops, sorry lockets, just read whole thread, didn't mean to be rude about your DDs name Blush

Yes, but you could consider accepting my apology. I'm sure we all read threads too fast sometimes and make mistakes. Apologies once again.

Tillyscoutsmum · 14/02/2011 14:48

It wouldn't take Sherlock to work out that I love the name Scout Smile. We toyed with using it as her first name but weren't quite brave enough.

seeker · 14/02/2011 15:03

Getting offended about people's opinions on names is seriously silly.

I think Scout is lovely Smile. It doesn't sound any more nicknamey than Ellie, Archie, Lily, Beth or many other names. In fact it sounds very 'complete' to my ears.

cumbria81 · 14/02/2011 16:33

I really do not see the appeal of this name. It's hideous.

exoticfruits · 14/02/2011 16:39

I think that you would be setting them up for jokes in the playground.

othersideofchannel · 14/02/2011 18:54

I like Scout and find it makes a refreshing change to all the cutey names you hear for girls these days.

exotic, what excactly is teaseworthy about Scout?

schmee · 14/02/2011 19:03

Love it.

MrsMcCave · 14/02/2011 19:21

FWIW, reading TKAM at school, Scout was always Snout. As well as Atticus being - but of course - Twatticus. Oh, the humour when you're 14 Hmm. How about Mayella? Or Calpurnia? Wink

reddaisy · 14/02/2011 19:37

I think it is coming out 50/50 according to the mumsnet jury. It is going on my possible list!

Many more threads like these to come and the baby isn't due until September Grin

I agree PoppyDaisy, it sounds complete to me too.

lockets The other thing I do with a potential name is decide whether I would like to be called it.

And I ask DP whether he would like to be called the potential boys names, I find that helps to rule some names out.

I would be really happy being called Scout but it definitely isn't a safe choice.

I often think a boys name is nice until DP says: "Urgh no man would want to be called that!" If you want to reveal or PM your other children's names I would love to steal hear them Wink

Love the character in TKAM, but... it's a nickname, not a proper name!

Also, when you actually stop and look at it, on the page, its an incredibly ugly word. If it weren't for the character in that one book, I don't think anyone would ever consider it... there's just no loveliness about it.

reddaisy · 14/02/2011 21:27

I have Pm'd you lockets.
