What do you think of Scout?!

I love it but I am aware it could be considered a bit of a pet's name. Thoughts please, I have decided that I should have decided on all my favourite names before I got pregnant so I know if I genuinely like them or whether my hormones make names seem nicer than they are!

Pretentious.

I have a 12 week old puppy called Scout (she is a girl) and she is named after TKAMs little girl

Lovely and so cute for a puppy (boxer so full of character!) but not really sold on it for an actual human!

Ephiny · 15/02/2011 10:32

I think it's a cute nickname but personally wouldn't use as a 'proper' given name.

flower38 · 15/02/2011 12:07

terrible sorry

IslaValargeone · 15/02/2011 14:40

Loving scout, as I'm a fan of TKAM we have a Harper.

seeker · 15/02/2011 15:06

I hate to break it to you, but Harper Lee's real name was, I think, Nell.

Harper was her second name which she used to conceal her gender, like many other writer at the time.

BuntyPenfold · 15/02/2011 15:15

Why hate to break it to us?
Nell is a nice name, nn for Ellen or Helen usually.
I don't understand.

Ephiny · 15/02/2011 15:28

I don't understand either, surely Harper being an author's second rather than first name doesn't make it any less valid to use as your own dd's name Confused.

Love the name Harper actually, it's really beautiful for a girl (nothing wrong with it for a boy either, though I think it's generally seen as a girl's name). Wouldn't use Nell (or Scout as I've said) as full name but perfectly fine nicknames.

Surprising though it may seem seeker, we were quite aware of Harper Lee's first name being Nell.
What Ephiny and lockets said also.

IslaValargeone · 15/02/2011 16:59

Oh and while we are at it, she chose Harper not to conceal her gender but to avoid Nell Lee sounding like Nellie.

Bunbaker · 15/02/2011 17:09

I'm not keen either. The first things that came to mind were a dog's name and a nickname. Also boy Scouts and Scouting for Girls.

seeker · 15/02/2011 19:51

So pleased you're all so well informed!

seeker · 15/02/2011 19:54

Just strikes me that it's a bit like Woody Allen calling his unfortunate daughter Satchel as a tribute to his musical hero.

Many people just prefer to give their child a name which is recognised as a full name, rather than a nn, that's all.

Personally I don't like 'Scout' anyway, as I don't think it looks or sounds nice -though of course the character (if not the name) in TKAM is fabulous. But even with a work which looks lovely and flows beautifully, I wouldn't give it as the child's name if it were a nn. Many people just prefer to have a recognised full name.

Violethill · 15/02/2011 21:22

whoops! work = word

seeker · 15/02/2011 23:24

Do you honestly not see a problem with being a girl called Satchel? HONESTLY?

vess · 15/02/2011 23:33

I wouldn't call a child Scout personally. But then again name meanings are important to me. The meaning of 'Scout' is nothing to be excited about.

Violethill · 16/02/2011 06:49

Agree with that too vess. I wouldn't choose a name unless it had a beautiful meaning too

mamaGool · 16/02/2011 07:00

FWIW I like Scout :)
