Why is it everywhere I go, someone is shouting one of these names at their child?

I'm a bit disappointed, thought it was a new trend. If I have another I might work in a question mark, or a colon.

OneFish - influence of Mr Grylls perhaps?

(That's not his real name, is it? I always though "Bear Grylls" sounded like something Ray Mears might rustle up on the open fire when forced to survive in the forests of North America for a couple of weeks...)

OldieButBaddie · 06/12/2010 11:34

I have never heard anyone shout either name
I am clearly hanging out in the wrong places

CheerfulYank · 06/12/2010 18:27

I know several Jaydons and Kaydons as well as their Jaidin, Jayden, Kaydin, Kaiden counterparts, of both sexes, lots of male Braydens, a few Haydens, two Zaydens, (though one is a Xhadyn), and, God help me, a Tadon. Ugh.

It is something to do with the surname trend, which started in America because the uber-WASPs (our version of royalty don'tcha know :) ) were naming their children things like Abbott and Prescott, etc, to sort of cement their lineage to "influential" families. It trickled down, as these things will, resulting in a barrage of Parkers, Madisons, Carters, etc. (I surprisingly only know two Kennedys, and one is a (BOAK) Kinnidi.)

I now a Jayden, a Kayla, a Gianni, a D'Andre, a Ketanya, a Rhonie, a Brandon, a Clid, a Jada, a Nya, a Jaille, an Armani...I could go on.

Guess where I live?

OneFishTwoFish · 07/12/2010 10:23

UQD - I think Bear Grylls's first name is Edward. Perhaps Bear was derived from Teddy?

smilingserenely · 07/12/2010 13:47

wonder if jayden /kayden type names are heard more because they are more audible / resonant because of their cosonants are equally interspersed with vowels - referred to as bell tones by one naming expert.

also feel it's potentially unfair to lump the newly invented dare i say american imports such as kayden and jayden (not jadon an ancient biblical name) with other names such as leighton and hayden both of which have been popular for decades in wales .

CheerfulYank · 07/12/2010 16:07

Also think it's to do with the big "Irish name" boom in the US. Aidan was huge for awhile which eventually led to Ayden, Aden, etc, and then started other names ending with the -aden sound. (Liam was big too; apparently Eamonn and Declan are going to spike in the next few years. I love Declan, actually :) )

GreenButton · 07/12/2010 18:38

Stranded, are Clid, D'Andre, Rhonie and Armani boys or girls?

Clid sounds like a character in a Star Trek.

Where do you live, CR0??

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 07/12/2010 18:47

Clid is pronounced Clyde and is a boy. D'Andre and Armani boys. Rhonie is a girl. D'Andre's brother is D'Ante.

There is also a Reanna (pronounced Rhianna) in dd1's class. And a Keanna at their swim class.

OldieButBaddie · 08/12/2010 18:02

clid is too like clit for my liking

mopsyflopsy · 08/12/2010 22:30

I don't know a single Hayden/Jayden/Kayden, so yes, it must be a regional thing.

AllieW · 10/12/2010 13:14

I've heard that there are lots though not actually met any. It's disappointing because I've always loved the name Aidan which has a much older pedigree (as it were), being a Saint's name and so on. But I couldn't use it now because it's much too trendy.

rachel1970 · 13/12/2010 13:37

I've not met any Kaydens/Haydens/Jaydens either.. they must be concentrated in certain areas.

littlemissm · 14/12/2010 09:59

Well i have a Jaeden but when he was named 16 yrs ago it wasn't common at all.

figcake · 14/12/2010 10:03

It must stop ...too much (fines?? Bear

Thissideofchannel · 14/12/2010 10:34

I don't know any Ayden/Kayden/Jayden/Haydens either.... are there really that many around?

figcake, what must stop - the name or this thread Confused?

mathanxiety · 15/12/2010 02:49

I think it was Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith who unleashed the Jaden craze upon the world.

Aidan was ruined shot into popularity by SATC but before that there was Aidan Quinn..
