The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped - Part 2

Hi everyone, Aussie Mumsnetter here. As some have requested a new thread be started by an Aussie I decided to do it.

I am still gripped by this case and like many, I am awaiting updates of new information.

Will a matching donor for a liver for Ian be found soon? I hope he makes a full recovery.

Will he be able to shed new light on the lunch they all shared?

And of course is she guilty of deliberately poisoning them or was it an innocent mistake?

Live updates also from the BBC:

Erin Patterson: Trial begins for Australia woman accused of toxic mushroom lunch - BBC News

velvetandsatin · 30/04/2025 02:33

Erin served "individual beef Wellingtons", the judge said.

Curiouser and curiouser...

TerrorAustralis · 30/04/2025 06:22

She doesn’t seem to bright does she? Lying about the dehydrator which the police promptly recovered from the waste facility. All after she’d posted about using it online!

Wrenjeni · 30/04/2025 07:33

The live updates are great. I can see this will take over my life for a few weeks!

Dustyblue · 30/04/2025 07:45

Day one and I'm as gripped as I was 2 years ago!

Individual plates/servings? That's far worse than a platter on the table where you help yourselves.

That could(at a push) be explained as panic. Finding residue of death cap mushrooms will be a lot harder to explain away.

Dustyblue · 30/04/2025 08:25

Right, she's going for the "terrible accident" defence.

The discussion of a cancer diagnosis at the lunch is brand new. Wow.

Amazing what a great Defence Barrister can do. Waiting for the prosecution witnesses including her ex husband. Poor Simon!

Wrenjeni · 30/04/2025 08:39

So there’s evidence that she researched the location of death cap mushrooms, drove to those locations and bought a dehydrator on the way?!
I’m looking forward to seeing how they spin that as accidental.

velvetandsatin · 30/04/2025 08:49

Right, she's going for the "terrible accident" defence.

She should have figured that route out before she was first interviewed.

No, she bought it a few months before the fatal lunch - coincidentally in mushroom season, from what I recall.

The court heard Erin Patterson purchased a Sunbeam food dehydrator in April 2023.

I think I'm going to stick with the ABC as they also have a daily roundup.

Samples taken from the dehydrator found at the waste transfer centre were positive for amanita mushrooms.

Oh man, she's cooked.

For updates you can try the Guardian online and click on the Australian edition in the top right corner. No paywall but never ever sign up for anything as they want your money. Unsurprisingly.

echt · 30/04/2025 09:57

The bit of “tragic accident” I don’t get is:

the differently-coloured plates, i.e. planned, through possibly circumstantial evidence

Will the defendant’s plates turn up clean?

She is so fucked.

I can't believe it's been two years!

Grrrpredictivetex · 30/04/2025 12:53

This is fascinating, has she been in prison last 2 years?

Dustyblue · 30/04/2025 13:33

No, it took a long time for the police investigation to result in her being arrested and taken into custody. That happened at the police station over the road from my kiddo's school... that was one bad school pick up.

Think she's been in prison awaiting trial for about a year at least?

Dustyblue · 30/04/2025 14:02

Oh dear, so she lied to the lunch guests about having cancer. Then turned up 2 days later at Leongatha hospital 'urgent care' (which is the last thing from fucking urgent) & realised the doctor/s she eventually saw had treated the others. Oops! Then insisted she had to leave.

Shit Erin, you're in trouble

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/04/2025 14:03

I didn't realise until today that she'd dumped her phone and it's never been found! Very dodgy.

I didn't know that either, can't remember it being reported before.

Her Defence team have a job on their hands. You'd feel sorry for them if they weren't charging thousands/day plus expenses 🙄

wandawaves · 30/04/2025 14:23

Oh dear... so she joined some nature forum, someone posted a sighting of death caps at a location, then the next day she travels to that location, and buys a dehydrator that day too....

Dustyblue · 30/04/2025 14:35

You couldn't make it up could you?

On the original thread from 2 years ago, I posted a link from the real estate listing for her house. The garden was a big feature & included cute pics of mushrooms growing under a tree.

Foraging is a legit hobby down this way... but you don't off your inlaws.

velvetandsatin · 30/04/2025 14:41

I like the bit where she did three factory resets on her phone, including one after the police had seized it at her property!

Well, I do a twice daily factory reset on all my devices, takes hours but those nosey cops won't leave me alone
