Welcome back and welcome for the first time to any newbies. As we go back into autumn/winter mode, sewing days are more and more appealing as the wind gales outside. I enjoyed looking back over the last thread, there were so many beautiful patterns (so little time), such beautiful makes, that thread is an absolute goldmine for inspiration. Also such wisdom from you lovely lot! Thank you. I couldn't do it without you actually as no one around me sews and you have imparted such great advice, hints and tips.

Argh I hate it when that happens

Oh how frustrating @Jins From a selfish perspective it’s good to know the 10 works though - I’m hoping to get some sewing time in soon so maybe the Remy will make it higher up my list. Im feeling quite autumnal despite the sunshine today so I also fancy making a cord skirt, a cord pinafore (liking the look of the free Gambit pattern on Mood), the D&D Sirocco (has anyone made a long sleeve version?).

Jins · 07/10/2023 19:47

@SBAM the 10 is satisfyingly oversized without drowning me. I may make a slight tweak as my wide shoulders are making it feel slightly tight when I lift my arms up but I think I can do it within the seam allowance. I’m going to make it slighter longer and I’m going to put some of the extra length up top to drop the armscye slightly. Raglans always seem to have pull lines (even the website examples do) but I think I can reduce them a bit.

The plain front version is a very quick sew. I’m planning a couple of each style

Spent yesterday cutting out patterns and then cutting out fabric to bring with me on holiday. I've got my sewing machine and overlocker with me, and hopefully all the bits and bobs I need, although I'm only staying an hour from home so if I've forgotten anything I can do a quick trip back. Looking forward to starting with the Anna Allen Philippa trousers this evening.

Jins · 10/10/2023 09:18

Second Remy wearable toile complete. I used a leftover piece of viscose challis from my Sauvie so both my Sew House 7 projects have been made in the same fabric 🤦‍♀️In the interests of speed and on the fly adjustments I’ve not French seamed. It’s ended up as a useful top.

So what I’ve learned for the future is that the minimal detailing doesn’t show up on busy prints and the next one with the button loop needs to be a plainer fabric.

It has made its way into my collection of patterns that will be made again and again along with LN cadence, Sinclair Poppy pants and the Ogden cami

Jins · 11/10/2023 12:26

@SBAM

This is size 10 on a size 14 mannequin.

edit - turns out you can’t edit to add a pic

Wow so good to see that

Looks great @Jins - thanks for the pic. Is that the plain front version?

I’ve got a baby quilt to finish (baby’s due next week!) before I can get on with some sewing for me. And my sewing room is an absolute mess, I’m hoping to get some child free time soon to sort it out.

Jins · 11/10/2023 18:40

Yes that’s the plain front. It’s a very quick sew which makes it perfect for a wearable toile. The button front version has more scope for adjustment as well

twobluechickens · 12/10/2023 11:29

I'm having a lovely time on holiday doing lots of sewing (and going for walks etc). So far I've made the Maison Fauve Tilda blouse (free pattern, fiddly pin tucks but otherwise quite easy), the Tessuti Athina top (fab, but will size down next time) and currently most of the way through Anna Allen's Philippa pants trousers which I'm doing in denim. I've also brought the Fibre Mood Tilly blouse pieces with me but unlikely to start that before I go home.

Currently no electricity due to planned power cut, so going to head out for a walk and lunch instead, and hopefully recommence my sewing travails later this afternoon!

SBAM · 12/10/2023 17:42

@twobluechickens what a lovely sewing holiday! Is the maison faive pattern quite high necked? The pintucks are an interesting detail.

twobluechickens · 12/10/2023 18:20

It's probably the same neckline as a crew neck t-shirt. I don't suit a really high neck but this looks nice on me. I'll post a pic of me wearing it when I'm back from my hols. The fabric I've used is quite drapey - viscose presumably - and it seemed to highlight my boobs when I tried it on, but that might have been the bra I was wearing!

NutellaEllaElla · 12/10/2023 20:44

Sounds like a blissful holiday

twobluechickens · 12/10/2023 22:48

It has been lovely - I really needed to switch off after a crazy year at work, and sewing is the best way to do that - takes all my concentration. Plus the weather has been rubbish so I've had the perfect excuse to stay in 😁

Jins · 13/10/2023 08:43

It does sound like a perfect holiday. I’m lucky to get a couple of hours for sewing and I find it very relaxing.

Today I’m going rogue. My favourite ribbed jersey sleeveless top has given me good service over many years but it’s starting to look a bit sad. Yesterday I used it to draft a pattern and today I’m going to test it with some leftover jersey that didn’t make it into the vacuum bag when I packed it all up. If it works then I foresee a future with many of these tops.

Doesn’t help with the current need for tops with sleeves unfortunately but it’s something I’ve never done before.

Jins · 13/10/2023 17:06

I’m counting this as a win!

A few tweaks are needed, the hems on the arms need to be deeper and it needs to be a wee bit shorter but it fits like the old one does. I think I liked the old one because it had hemmed neckline and armholes rather than bands.

Jins · 13/10/2023 17:06

Well that’s a useless pic but you get the idea

twobluechickens · 13/10/2023 20:35

I think that's a definite win! I'm looking at doing the same with a top I love.

Could you try facings rather than bands on the neck and armholes? I did that with the TATB Coco and it looks pretty good.

Jins · 13/10/2023 21:30

@twobluechickens this doesn’t have bands. The fabric is turned over 2cm and stretch stitched at 1.5 and 1 cm. It’s a replica of the original except the edges were cover stitched on that and I can’t do that.

I’ll probably twin needle the next one now I know it fits

twobluechickens · 13/10/2023 21:33

Ah I see!

NutellaEllaElla · 15/10/2023 21:18

it was my sister's birthday today and I gifted my her the Eve wrap dress that she chose the fabric for etc. I cringed inside as I knew all the imperfections. I hope it is wearable but I worry that the wrap neckline will gape and the fabric catches on everything and has some small runs in it. Argh. It wasn't her only proper present though.

bookbook · 16/10/2023 17:10

Its taken some time , but the dress I have been making ( well the toile ) for DD is finally almost done - just need to hem now , but I will do that when she tries it on again . I am so chuffed as it fits beautifully <phew> . I was pinning the hem , and trying to get the front wrap to match - (really , really out ) , when I went to look at the pattern , only the short version matches - the others have an upward curve 🙄would have helped if I had looked first ….😀

twobluechickens · 16/10/2023 17:43

Nice work @bookbook and @NutellaEllaElla I bet she's delighted with it.

Collars/collar stands are my nemesis. Why do they never work properly? Got the bloody thing on now but I'd hardly call it neat.

Jins · 17/10/2023 11:15

Second top made from my self drafted pattern. The twin needle tunnelled a bit but I quite like it.

Back to sleeved tops again for the next project.

edit - just spotted a stray thread that needs sorting 🤣
