Welcome back and welcome for the first time to any newbies. As we go back into autumn/winter mode, sewing days are more and more appealing as the wind gales outside. I enjoyed looking back over the last thread, there were so many beautiful patterns (so little time), such beautiful makes, that thread is an absolute goldmine for inspiration. Also such wisdom from you lovely lot! Thank you. I couldn't do it without you actually as no one around me sews and you have imparted such great advice, hints and tips.

Quick question that I hope someone can help with - one of the fabrics suggested for the Sew House Seven Slacks is poplin. Does anyone know how well poplin holds up to normal wear when it’s used for loose fitting trousers?

I once managed to wear out a pair of shop bought linen trousers in a day…so am a little apprehensive about spending hours on something that may not be that hard wearing.

Hi all

I just did a long post and then lost it! I love the patchwork @SBAM. I hope you enjoy Corfu @Jins

I made 3 beachcombers for our holiday in half term and am very pleased with them, I will definitely be making more. I won't have much time now though until after we come back.

I am after a top pattern a bit like the remy raglan so loose and flowy but with set in sleeves. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was wondering about this one https://sewoverit.com/products/frida-blouse-and-dress-pdf-sewing-pattern

@Frumpyunicorn there’s also the Friday pattern Company Sagebrush top.
the True Bias Roscoe is similarly breezy but it’s gathered raglan sleeves instead. Tilly and the buttons has Mabel and Marnie which might fit the bill - Marnie more so I think.
If you use the Foldline you can filter patterns by style, looking for smock tops might get you some more ideas.

Hello, wondering if anyone has any idea what I am doing wrong as googling has failed me. My machine is misbehaving, started sewing the quilt together and some times it stitches completely fine then seemingly out the blue it will start jam, huge tangle of thread on the underside and quite a loud almost jumping noise. completely rethreading both top and bobbin threads resolve it but then 10 minutes later its doing the same thing again. I am a bit stumped and it's very frustrating as really slows the process down having to stop and start endlessly.
The machine is a Bernette Academy 05 and it wasn't a very cheap one so I am hoping this is user error!

bookbook · 13/05/2024 07:49

@Allthegoodnamestakken - have you cleaned out the bobbin casement recently ?- it is always worth doing , regardless

Frumpyunicorn · 13/05/2024 08:22

And try changing the needle too if you haven't done that recently

kittykarate · 13/05/2024 10:31

Ive had that. Check for fluff in your bobbin area. Is it a new spool of thread? I got some cheap thread and it was ok in the needle, but in the bobbin caused chaos as it mustn't have been quite smooth.

Oh and there were 3 days where I kept putting my bobbin in the holder with the thread direction going the wrong way.....

kittykarate · 13/05/2024 10:38

Anyway, I FINALLY finished my Pona jacket.

I also made the True Bias Nova jumpsuit. Now this may have been me being a dope, but I think this pattern is not very tall - I shortened the legs by my default 2 inches and I've ended up with ankle grazer hems instead of space for the elastic. Anyhow, nice enough to make, relatively quick ( started cutting fabric at 1pm, finished by 6:30)

Love the jumpsuit @kittykarate . Brilliant fabric choice. The jacket does look very sophisticated.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 14/05/2024 08:20

@bookbook that was the first thing I tried, @Frumpyunicorn haven't changed the needle so will give that a go
@kittykarate It is the first time I've used this thread on the bobbin but its DMC cotton thread not a cheap brand so I'm going to be very annoyed if that's the problem.

Chewbecca · 14/05/2024 09:45

Great work on the Pona and jumpsuit. I must wear my Pona instead of leaving it languishing in the wardrobe like all my other makes.
My bobbin thread was continually getting tangled when I started and I eventually realised it didn't happen when I held them back behind the needle when I started sewing so I think I must have not been doing something properly.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/05/2024 22:11

The last few times that my machine was being a dick, it turned out it needed the needle changing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/05/2024 22:12

Loving all the pics.

Jins · 15/05/2024 05:32

Tangled thread on the underside happened a lot on my old machine and it was always bottom bobbin tension.

Greetings from Corfu! Me-made swimwear holding up well!

Allthegoodnamestakken · 15/05/2024 07:01

Thanks for all the suggestions, turns out I was being an absolute idiot and winding the bobbins wrong!. Rewound one correctly and absolutely no issues at all in a 3 hour sewing session. Was like a different machine.

twobluechickens · 17/05/2024 23:45

Goodness, we're going to need another thread soon!

I have been doing a bit of sewing. First the Tessuti Romy top which is a bit baggy around the armscye but wearable, and I've also almost finished the top from the Meryl jumpsuit. I bought more of the same fabric to make the trousers too, and will join them up. Spent this evening cutting out a Style Arc Ethel top in some chequered linen. Had forgotten how much linen moves! And pattern matching has been a PITA. But I think it'll be a very useful top.

I'm making an easy batwing top at the moment, but mid make I have decided the neckline is too high so want to adjust it to a deeper one that suits me better. I've drawn a new neckline onto my fabric (not cut yet) and I'm now contemplating making a new front facing based on the new neckline. I may have bitten off more than I can chew! Any wise words welcomed.
