Sad

Has a thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/arts_and_crafts/1622437-So-I-had-a-really-silly-idea-to-learn-how-to-crochet and I still can't get my head around it. I've watched countless different videos and they all go too fast for me even the slow motions ones all i've managed to make is a hat for a barbie

Does anyone know of a website that has pictures with step by step instructions, please Smile

Good luck Anya, you can do it Xmas Grin

I'm going to try rows again tommorrow! Feels like my nemesis now, I will not be beatenXmas Grin

TheFowlAndathePussycat I have the 'Happy Hooker' book but I don't find it that helpful. For starters it's American which confuses me as the stitches are different and my hat that I tried to make from it is very small but that may be because I have a huge head

I do like the Nikki Trench books and I have a book of 100 different granny squares which I am working my way through incredibly slowly and ignoring the really tricky ones

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 14/12/2012 07:14

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6....Xmas Grin

I've actually got the 'Cute and Easy' book too, but I found the text in the Debbie Stoller book was quite good at explaining what to do. I'll go back and cross reference tonight.

I'm a needle and thread girl normally you see, but I've just finished a patchwork quilt that has taken me months, so I'm after a bit of woolly diversion Xmas Grin

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 14/12/2012 08:28

Oh god, I've just had to make 3 mini crocheted rectangles for an angry bird I'm crocheting for ds2.....they are all wonkyXmas Blush I don't know how it's happening, it would seem I can only go round on circlesXmas Hmm

The angry bird looks more confused and startled than angry too.....

AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 20:57

I still can't fecking do it Xmas Sad

Where-ish are you, Anya? I'll ask around for a teacher for you

AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 22:13

Won't be able to afford to pay for a teacher Sad

I have started to make a granny square, but its more round and its got massive holds in Xmas Blush

OP posts:
fraktion · 16/12/2012 22:19

It sounds like your tension is squiffy. I know when I started my squares were more spirals...

AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 22:19

New pic on profile Xmas Blush

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 16/12/2012 22:26

Nah, i meant someone like me that'll do it for Brew and cake. There's a few of us but i need a county or city to base my enquiries Xmas Grin

Agree with fraktion; how are you holding your wool?

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 16/12/2012 22:29

Grannies only really work for me if i do 3 trebles and just one chain. Don't forget, though, you work each group of 3 trebles into the gaping hole not the stitch with granny squares; total opposite to rows.

AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 22:36

I've been doing it in the massive gaping holes, honest grin

I've found out that my mum can do it, she has since taught both my sisters now (I've put this down to favouritism and nothing to do with how far away I live Xmas Grin )

OP posts:
AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 22:37

I'm also holding the wool like they do in the videos.

I'm going to have another go trying to do it tighter this time

Thanks
OP posts:
PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 16/12/2012 22:42

Keep it taut, relax your shoulders. 3 trebles, one chain, 3 trebles, one chain. Deep breath and...

AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 22:52

Just tried again, doing it tighter but its curling and still getting the massive holes

OP posts:
AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 22:54

Right, one last go before bed...

OP posts:
AnyaKnowIt · 16/12/2012 23:28

The holes are smaller, still not square tho, another pic on profile Xmas Grin

I'm ever so proud of myself Xmas Blush

Thanks again for all your help!

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 17/12/2012 03:09

First round should have 4 groups of 3 trebles each (the first group you make on each round will technically have 2 chain instead of the first treble)

Second round should have 8 groups. 2 groups in each hole.

Third round, there should be 2 groups then 1 group with the pairs forming corners and the singles forming the sides. It should start looking properly square on this round.

Definitely a vast improvement, you're justified in your pride Xmas Grin

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 17/12/2012 08:03

I've just realised why the grannies I've done for the Refuge blanket look so different to the ones other people sent me - I've done no chain at all between the 3 trebles :o

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 17/12/2012 08:55

Oops! Some patterns say chain 3 between, which to me ends up far too floppy Xmas Confused

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 17/12/2012 10:23

Well, it's not really an ooops as they do look fab - I was just a little confused as to why mine looked so much tighter - I knew it couldn't all be down to tension :o I kept looking at the two sets thinking Why...?

They are much more solid than the others which isn't a bad thing on a mixed square blanket I think.

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 17/12/2012 13:25

I like yours, they're a nice medium tension to work with. Mixed blankets look fab but are a complete bugger to put together especially when one clever sod uses a 3mm hook and another uses a 5mm and you accidentally put them next to each other

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 17/12/2012 14:36

Yes.... One of the slightly bigger and thus trickier squares has been stitched in back to front Blush and, as a) it was a PITA and b) it was a granny so does not really notice, I've left it :o

I don't think I'll be trusted with construction again!

End of hijack :)

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 17/12/2012 15:36

Ssh don't tell anyone but one of the early hugs has a wrong initial on Xmas Blush

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 17/12/2012 15:45

lol

AnyaKnowIt · 17/12/2012 21:08

I'm getting confused about which stitch is which Xmas Sad
