Sad

Has a thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/arts_and_crafts/1622437-So-I-had-a-really-silly-idea-to-learn-how-to-crochet and I still can't get my head around it. I've watched countless different videos and they all go too fast for me even the slow motions ones all i've managed to make is a hat for a barbie

Does anyone know of a website that has pictures with step by step instructions, please Smile

I found this website very helpful for the basic stitches. I also had a book recommended somewhere on here called crochet for kids or something but I didn't find that terribly clear tbh.

It's a shame you aren't getting to grips with it, I have discovered an absolute love of crochet, it's such a relaxing thing to do.

AnyaKnowIt · 12/12/2012 11:13

Ohh that link looks helpful Thanks

I did borrow that book, but it confused me Blush

I used a book called Crochet Unravelled when I taught myself last summer.

MimsyBorogroves · 12/12/2012 11:46

I'm trying to learn too. 45 minutes for a tiny wiggly worm thing.

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 12/12/2012 15:32

We need to set up a Hooker network for teaching newbies :)

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/12/2012 15:42

A crochet newbies help desk is definitely what I need! I got completely stuck making a sodding flower middle for a square last night,it's now back to being a ball of wool! I think I got a bit carried away with my lack of level of abilityBlush

Rounds I think are easier than rows! I mastered rounds okay but still find rows really tricky, don't seem able to hang on to all my stitches, squares become triangles.....

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 12/12/2012 17:20

So make bunting :o

AnyaKnowIt · 12/12/2012 18:32

Mimsy - it took me over an hour just to do the first knot, 2 evenings to make a worm

I'll do lessons in west hants/east dorset although I'll have to bring 3week old ds...

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/12/2012 19:16

If my triangles were nice and even I would, I do like a bit of bunting! They are more winky wonky lumpy unidentifiable shapes unfortunatelyGrin

On the positive side, I have done a few nice granny squares I am ignoring the fact they all seem to be slightly different sizes though Confused

KelleStarOfWonder · 12/12/2012 19:28

I can offer some support to anyone around Somerset. I'm more the Bath direction. I remember how stressful it is trying to figure it out, sometimes seeing it in action helps.

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 12/12/2012 23:08

I have the opposite problem, my rows are growing rather than shrinking! I started off tonight with 21 stitches and gained a stitch on every row! I was trying to do turning chains at the end of each row, mayber that was my problem. I only started teaching myself tonight though,so I will persevere...

mummybookworm · 12/12/2012 23:12

Try Knitwitch on Youtube, that helped me when I was learning.

lia66 · 12/12/2012 23:12

Oh gosh I feel your pain, my friend taught me to crochet a few weeks ago, I was merrily making a hat, ran out of wool for a couple of days and now can't remember what to do Xmas Grin

mummybookworm · 12/12/2012 23:12

Or try Attic 24

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 13/12/2012 02:05

Fowl, you're probably working the first stitch into the chain - make a mental note of the last stitch you make before the chain, and make sure that's where you work into once you've done the chain and turn :)

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 13/12/2012 02:06

Crochet Geek blog is good

SinisterSal · 13/12/2012 08:58

I learnt from cute and easy crochet. By niki. French. Has pictures and diagrams of each stitch.

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 13/12/2012 18:50

pidj I thought by row 4 that that was probably what was going wrong, but even though I was trying not to I still manage to add another 3 stitches in the next 3 rows! I am using 'The Happy Hooker' book by Debbie Stoller which is pretty good but I will give those sites a try too.

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 13/12/2012 18:56

Are you going too far the other end?

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 13/12/2012 18:59

Maybe, I was just going up until what looked like the last 'V'?

PurplePidjChickIsNotTheMessiah · 13/12/2012 19:05

Count, count, count Xmas Grin

Tollund · 13/12/2012 19:09

Jumping on because I can't crochet to save my life. Dunno if it's because I learnt to knit first and my brain can only cope with one wool based craft?

fraktion · 13/12/2012 19:39

doyouthink as a knitter I find rows easier than rounds....

There isn't really anything can can beat RL help for crochet. Sadly I'm a bit far from anyone to offer.

AnyaKnowIt · 13/12/2012 20:25

Well I've had my takeaway and going to google some of the suggestions

Wish me luck Grin
