You dont have to use photos if you dont want to.

EG...For favourite recipe you could download images (from google) of the ingrediants needed to make up your favourite dish.

I made a LO for a CJ that had the theme of My Kinda Music and I used piccies of my favourite album covers...made mini chipboard embellishments and used UTEE to give a glossy finish.
