ok, I am a very basic knitter. I cant read patterns and can do a basic row, but want to knit a square of edgar (as Im sure lots of others do) so it was suggested on the other thread here that a thread was started for the less confident where we can collate advice and help without feeling a bit dim and where the more advanced can help us out a bit!

LadyWellian,

Thanks so much - for the pattern and the blocking instructions (have to admit I've never blocked my work before so am def going to give it a try). Just waiting for my wool to arrive and then I can get started.

Thanks so much Grin

morsbagmum · 23/03/2011 08:39

LadyWellian I would also like to say thank you for the heart instructions, I'm going to be brave and give it a go tonight.

greenlotus · 23/03/2011 09:40

Marking place, also did anyone sort out the Debbie Bliss yarn colours? The ones on the link don't seem to match the shade card. I get that they are blues and lilacs or doesn't it matter as long as they are broadly the right colour range?

greenlotus · 23/03/2011 09:45

I've just found the answer to my q up the thread, thanks.

I just ordered the yarn and needles for me and dd1 to get knitting as we are usuallu "big" knitters on huge needles (faster!)

SHe's so pleased to be doing it, I'm really proud of her.

Off to PM you, Pixie!

womma · 23/03/2011 15:12

Oh flip, I'm lost with all these threads all over the place!

Pixie I've deffo pm'd you about knitting a square, now I've found which yarn's been chosen and will order that. When is the deadline for this and where do I send the finished square/s to? Sorry, but there's a lot of links with a lot of pages and I'm easily confused.

Also, I wondered if it would be a nice gesture to do Edgar's DC's names in swiss embroidery on the squares? I know her little boy was called Leo, but is it untrusive to ask her DDs' names too? Just wondered if that's okay.

JulesJules · 23/03/2011 15:35

marking my place.

Have PMed you, Pixie

Hi thanks for the PM, Pixie.

I'm totally confused about the colours - was going to order one of the Debbie Bliss ones from Laughing Hens, the post further up listed 8 shade codes, (8,17,19,24,28,29,33,41)but Pixie's PM just listed 4 - 6,7,8,606

??

Pixie,

I've PM'd you

weegiemum · 23/03/2011 22:55

When you are doing a 6" square to these specs, roughly how many stitches are you casting on (I know I cast tight, so can adjust)!

Just wondered?

LadyWellian · 23/03/2011 23:15

Weegie I'm working to 33 (based on a book of 6in squares I have). I'm quite a loose knitter generally but with the Rowan Cashsoft I'm finding it looks a bit smaller than the one I did with cotton DK for my own blanket the other day. Bit hard to tell though as I haven't finished a square yet. (Will get on to it on Fr when not at work). Most of the patterns are 42-45 rows.

trumpton · 23/03/2011 23:38

Square 1 made and blocked. Bliss Cashmerino 33 stitches and 42 rows 4mm (8) needles .

Wool to MIL (88) tomorrrow for her to do a square.

Pixie I am on your list and have your address. Thank you for the the work you are doing.

sayanything · 24/03/2011 10:49

Just marking my place.

BornToFolk · 24/03/2011 11:11

Got my yarn! It's a really nice purply colour - that's OK isn't it?

I'm planning on doing a star, heart or possibly a lion (for Leo). Once I've worked out the pattern I'll post it so others can use it.

silkenladder · 24/03/2011 11:40

Just out of interest, how much wool are people getting through for one square (st st/ moss / garter)? Would be interesting to know for planning, although I'm waiting for my wool to be delivered. Could someone weigh the ball after finishing one square, maybe?

LadyW that book sounds interesting. What language is it in and could you link to it please?

Niecie · 24/03/2011 12:51

Silkenladder - I reckon about 3rd of a ball for a square. Maybe slightly less. I have done one square from some remains of a ball which didn't look like much but went a long way and I still have a decent length left which would sew up several squares.

Purple/pixie - Talking of sewing up - how is everybody finishing their work. Are we weaving in the cast on/off tails or leaving a length for sewing? Any preferences?

JemimaMop · 24/03/2011 13:10

Yarn came this morning, I have started my square. I am doing a basketweave square in Blue Jacket Cashsoft.

I have sized up to 4.5mm needles and used 35 stitches in a row to get the right size (although I do tend to knit to quite a tight tension).

DS2, who is now 6, used to have a jumper in a similar colour in a basketweave pattern when he was a baby. Broke my heart thinking about the poor Edgars :(

morsbagmum · 24/03/2011 13:57

I have done my first square - the Debbie Bliss wool is lovely to knit with, thought of the Edgars whilst i was knitting. Hoping to get a 2nd square knitted tonight.
