ok, I am a very basic knitter. I cant read patterns and can do a basic row, but want to knit a square of edgar (as Im sure lots of others do) so it was suggested on the other thread here that a thread was started for the less confident where we can collate advice and help without feeling a bit dim and where the more advanced can help us out a bit!

OP posts:
Dumbledoresgirl · 21/03/2011 19:02

DutchOma, does that result in a square with diagonal stitching?

KnittingRocks · 21/03/2011 19:33

Have ordered my wool Smile. Will try and do three or four squares - you can use the spares for something else I'm sure.

JoBettany · 21/03/2011 19:53

I won't get into town until Wednesday, but will get the supplies I need then.

magicOC · 21/03/2011 20:03

4mm is an 8 guys. Im an experienced knitter but useless writing instructions down, u taught my friend to knit face to face lol

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 20:09

I'm going to keep crocheting squares until my eyes bleed I run out, and make the blanket as big as possible Grin

Lets see if we can make ours bigger than the smelly sewers?? Wink

madamimadam · 21/03/2011 20:29

flashes novice knitter badge

Hmm. I've also put myself down on the sewing thread. Not sure of the protocol here. I'd love to contribute here too, if you could do with the squares but wouldn't want to take the place of someone else who wants to, iyswim.

But there's no better incentive for me to sort out my tension (my square could actually turn out large enough to shelter a village otherwise Blush)

Needles poised...

madamimadam · 21/03/2011 20:30

I'll also go and check my stash for colours to see if I can donate wool, in any case. I got all overambitious before Christmas.

(So I'm not only a novice, I'm a massively overly optimistic one as well...)

purplepidjin · 21/03/2011 21:32

Madam, we'll happily accept all you care to give. I was hoping to get 60 squares and make a blanket 3'x5'. I seem to have underestimated MN generosity, so am going to keep on joining squares until I run out! Anyhoo, there's no possibility of "replacing" anyone, jsut lots of thank yous Smile

see upthread a couple of posts for the yarn, hook size and finished size

zisforzebra · 21/03/2011 23:25

Hello,

I've just been trying to locate on online store for the yarn. The colour chart in the link above and those at the online suppliers I've looked at so far don't seem to match. I don't want to buy the wrong one! Could someone point me in the right direction please. So far I've tried Laughing Hens and [[http://www.getknitted.com/acatalog/Yarns_AW10.html Get Knitted]

Also, are we doing just stocking stitch or any stitch?

zisforzebra · 21/03/2011 23:26

Get Knitted Sorry!

zisforzebra · 21/03/2011 23:31

BTW, I'm having to order online because the yarn shops round here are pretty much 100% acrylic and I don't dare set foot in a decent yarn shop incase I get carried away with Mr Mastercard! Smile

LadyWellian · 22/03/2011 00:35

I've bought some of the Rowan Cashsoft (was a bit Shock at the price of it) as I went in to John Lewis on my way home today and the colours stated for the Debbie Bliss didn't match up at all (I know this issue was flagged but wasn't sure of a way round it).

I was a bit late starting what with supper and bedtime but I've done about 8 rows of st st on 4mm needles and though I haven't measured it, I'd say it's coming up a bit small, which is unusual for me to say the least!

Has anyone finished a square in Cashsoft yet? If so, are you finding it comes up small too?

Also I've got a book of 6in squares and posted a couple on the other thread yesterday. There are a couple of lovely heart ones (one plain colour but the heart done with texture, one st st in 2 colours) that I said I'd post the patterns for, but I have to translate the charts into instructions so it'll take me a while. I've done about half of the 2 colour one so far. Would people like me to go ahead and post them? There's no rocket science about them - just K and P, no shaping or fancy stitches.

How is everyone getting on? Afraid I'm not much of a teacher but will help where I can.

maclover135 · 22/03/2011 09:21

LadyWellian, I'd love the charts for the heart patterned squares please - 2 colours and textured if possible. Many thanks Smile
I'm off to buy some wool this morning.

purplepidjin · 22/03/2011 09:40

zisfor, we're going for a grey-blue-lilac-green theme. From laughing hens, the shades are 008,017, 019, 024, 028, 029, 033, 041 and from get knitted 03, 12, 13, 14, 15.

It's not a cheap wool, but we wanted to go for somethign that feels lovely and will last which acrylic doesn't really do. There is a Paypal fund and a fair few generous people who can't knit/crochet/sew are donating money instead. That will cover postage and also wool and fabric for those, like me, who have the time but not the readies Smile

purplepidjin · 22/03/2011 09:55

Oh, and just FYI, it's the weight of the wool and the size of the hook/needles that'll be providing consistency. As long as the colour blends in with the rest (ie not Barbie pink/midnight black etc) then it's fine. I'm not going to reject the squares people have kindly donated just because they aren't a specified shade of blue!!!

I feel bad having to dictate what wool people can and can't use - unfortunately, it has to be done or the blanket won't wash evenly and will be puckered, bobbled and faded within a year Sad

Anything neon will not be crossing my threshold [cackle]

zisforzebra · 22/03/2011 10:29

Purple Thank you! Don't worry about dictating, it is lovely wool and will last for years and years. I'll get straight on to Get Knitted and place my order (and try very hard not to slip some KnitPro needles into the basket at the same time!)

KnottyLocks · 22/03/2011 10:46

Oi Pidjin! Did I see you calling me a smelly sewer ? Shock

Grin
LadyWellian · 22/03/2011 10:46

maclover will post them this evening when I get home.

purplepidjin · 22/03/2011 11:06

Excellent, zis. And anything goes within the colour scheme. If you're up to fancy stitches, do that. If you can knit motifs, do that. If you can do a k1p1 and it'll take you a week, do that - everything is welcome!

FYI, this site has the Debbie Bliss at a pretty decent price. I've just ordered from there so hope it comes quickly :)

pigsinmud · 22/03/2011 15:14

Is Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino the same as Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK? I have just been in to the new wool & felting shop in town and she gave me baby cashmerino and said it was the same?! The wool/microfibre/cashmere percentages are the same as cashmerino DK. I don't want to start in case it's the wrong stuff.

Anyone know?

foundwanting · 22/03/2011 16:18

Got my wool today. It is lovely. Although John Lewis didn't have a huge choice of colours (only Baby Blue and Navy in the Rowan yarn.)

Will make a start tonight. According to my DMum, moss stitch lies 'flatter' than either garter or stocking stitch. So I'll give that a go.

applegeek · 22/03/2011 16:21

I taught myself to knit a month ago, have made 3 hats, 6 pairs of booties and am tackling a cardigan at the moment.

I love knitting and crocheting
