To not want to be woken for sex?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ve been with my husband for over 15 years and we have two young kids, 6 and 3. I’d say our sex life really comes and goes depending on stress, life and just general desire. We’ve had patches where we’ve not had sex for a few months, which always makes me quite worried. We have been better at making more an effort recently (still only like once or twice a month), but it’s hard when you’re just knackered from kids and work and the mental load etc etc.

my issue is I still feel like when we have sex is really down to him, and increasingly his “when” is in the middle of the night. This happened on Sunday night when he woke me up making moves at 1am when he knew I was fast asleep and had to get up at 6am for school run, a really stressful workday, bla bla. If I try and resist he will persist for a bit but gets the message and will leave me alone if I ask, but sometimes I do relent as I feel like I should try even though I’m exhausted as it’s bad if I’m always saying no, especially as it’s me saying we need to make more effort to have more intimate time, just wish he would try it on at a normal time when I’m actually fully conscious! He falls straight to sleep after and then I’m left awake going through my mental to do list.

i’m aware our sex life could be better, and I’m probably quite vanilla, but surely this isn’t great either? Honestly, sometimes a vibrator is so much easier!!

he is generally a very good guy and very much a feminist. But still, I’m not mad keen on these middle of the night sexy wakeups.

So sorry - I pressed the wrong flipping button - of course you are NOT being unreasonable for not wanting to be woken in the night for sex. Please ignore the ridiculous single vote there - with apologies!!!

42goingon14 · 06/10/2026 23:03

Tell him to have wank and leave you alone.

GarlicEverything · 06/10/2026 23:04

It's really bad. OK, it would be worse if he was trying while you're asleep, but it's not far off. He's disturbing your sleep, putting his needs well above yours, doing nothing to 'get you in the mood'. You're ending up performing duty sex, which is a long-term relationship killer and no man would or should be happy to feel his partner's only 'servicing' him for a quiet life.

Obviously you need to talk to him. What's stopping you going the traditional route of date nights - so you can reconnect as people who like each other - with the odd night away and occasional Early Nights?

Shinyandnew1 · 06/10/2026 23:05

So have you told him that you don’t want to be woken in the middle of the night for sex? What does he say?

What time do you go to bed? Does he come to bed much later?

GarlicEverything · 06/10/2026 23:05

@Smudge123456, click the answer you wanted, it will change.

Notanotherrestructure · 06/10/2026 23:05

I’d be pretty fuming at this. You need to have a chat and say you don’t really enjoy it at this time and therefore he needs to not wake you. If he’s a considerate partner he’ll do that.

KidsDoBetter · 06/10/2026 23:07

Personally I love being woken in the night for sex … but I don’t have young kids any longer. So I can very well see why you wouldn’t be up for that.

Soesk to him at a non-charged time. Ie not the middle of the night or when you’re both shattered.

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 06/10/2026 23:07

You need to communicate. DH and I actually had this convo early on. I categorically do not want to be woken up for sex, DH absolutely respects this and has never tried it. He said he doesnt care and if I find myself wanting it he does want me to wake him up for it - which I also have done before.

If he doesnt listen to "I do not want you to wake me up for sex. If you want it and I'm asleep you're more than welcome to take yourself off to the bathroom but you leave me alone" then he's a twat.

JLMA · 06/10/2026 23:09

I agree with pp. His “when” overwrites your needs, and that is not to have sleep disturbed so that it affects you getting back to sleep!
Does he know that when he disturbs you, you struggle to get back to sleep?
I mean, aside from that, I just think he’s being really selfish about his “when”.

It’s hard with life and young kids. Is there a better time for you both that’s not the middle of the night?

sweetpickle2 · 06/10/2026 23:16

My DH knows that if he woke me in the middle of the night for anything other than an emergency I’d never be having sex with him again.

However even if I didn’t have a zero tolerance policy to being woken up I would hate this. Does he ever try it on at other, more normal times?

Smudge123456 · 06/10/2026 23:31

@garliceverything- I just see the poll results rather than the selection options - can't seem to change it :-(

PeasOff · 06/10/2026 23:36

This isn't okay and you shouldn't have to put his needs above your own.

I think a conversation is needed about boundaries and when it's okay to initiate sex if you're not okay with being woken up for it.

unsync · 06/10/2026 23:39

If you didn't wake up, would he continue?

DesperateforSunshine · 06/10/2026 23:39

It is all about the conversations. We have had it and if one of us wakes up earlier and feels amorous and starts feeling each other and they wake up having a BJ or fingers rubbing my clit then it is beautiful and we do what we do and go back to sleep for a few hours before work then it’s lovely - but it has to be consensual.

Not on the app. You can’t change it once you press it

TheSmallAssassin · 06/10/2026 23:43

This made me so cross to read! He is not a fucking feminist if he is waking you up at 1am because is feeling horny and doesn't stop immediately if you resist. What a selfish bastard! I would tell him in no uncertain terms that this is a horrible thing to do and never to do it again!

You need to properly talk about this together - I know it's not super sexy, but maybe you need to schedule sex for a bit? Why's it only down to him to initiate, what's going on there?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/10/2026 23:57

OMG I’d be raging if anyone woke me up for anything, never mind sex! Tell him that you’ll divorce him if he ever wakes you up for sex again. What an absolutely selfish prick.

TheFormerMrsTruelove · 07/10/2026 00:00

Feminist my arse. That’s bloody laughable.

Tell him that it’s no fucking wonder your sex life is so shit if his idea of a mutually enjoyable sexual experience is nudging you awake at 1am because he’d rather have sex than a wank. Is he doing anything for you at all? He isn’t giving a shit about what’s in it for you. He is literally only thinking about himself and what he wants. When was the last time he did something for you, without expecting anything in return? When was the last time he even took your pleasure into consideration? Does he even realise that you’re supposed to enjoy it too? Or is he only concerned with his own pleasure?

More and better quality sex doesn’t start at 1am, when one person wants to have an orgasm so they can get off to sleep easier. You aren’t a mug of Horlicks.

You need a serious conversation with him.

grinandslothit · 07/10/2026 00:08

I was married to someone who would do this to me. it was so infuriating having to get up in just a couple hours and go to work. He didn't have to get up and go to work

I guess I didn't realise how offensive it really was because as a woman you just tolerate these things because you're married to them
He would grope me and pester me for a long time and if I shouted at him to leave me alone then he would sulk and call me grumpy
I guess I figured out he was probably watching porn and coming into bed late so I guess I was going to be his wank sock
So no he was not a nice man and I'm no longer with him

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 07/10/2026 00:21

say ‘Are you going to do the school run then?’

Rosepinks · 07/10/2026 00:28

Good men do not do this.
Very very selfish and unkind, as you have such an early start.

You need to tell him not to do this.
If he does it again, despite being told not to, you have a sex pest on your hands.

Efforts to coerce you into sex is very wrong.
Be careful of not telling him how wrong this is.

People end relationships over this type of behaviour.

chattyness · 07/10/2026 00:32

Start telling him before you both go to sleep that he is not to wake you up for sex , tell him every night until he gets the message and refuse if he tries.

mathanxiety · 07/10/2026 02:05

He is very much not a feminist.
He is a rapey, entitled twat.

Waking you from peaceful sleep to impose on you for something he wants is awful. There is nothing so special about sex that means you owe it to him whenever he feels like it. Substitute 'cup of tea' or 'sandwich' for sex and see how unreasonable and entitled he is being.

Hearing you say no and then persisting for a bit is really awful.

Going ahead with sex when he knows fully well that you are not enthusiastic about it and are only letting him do it because it's less bother to you than making him stop is beyond awful.

Please get really, really angry with him next time he does this.

Brokentoes85 · 07/10/2026 02:14

What do you mean wakes you by making moves? Touching you?

You know pressuring someone into sex "until you relent" is coercive control and rape
