Left a well-paid job over a toxic manager, AIBU?

I’ve recently walked away from a fairly well-paid job because my boss was utterly lacking in human empathy and her behaviour was so toxic it was making me feel ill. Think accusing me of not doing enough work when I was clearly overworked, telling me I had made other people look foolish in meetings with colleagues by completing reports that I had to send to senior management and that everyone else was more than happy with, telling me in online meetings that my offer to record/transcribe (trying to help her out) wasn’t needed and that it was not my meeting. Critiquing and pulling apart all my work in supervisions, telling me that other people had done the reports (not me) and speaking to me in like a four year old. Never asking how I was or bothering with any of the “wellbeing” questions that were a vital part of the supervision records.

This is someone who clearly disliked me from the start, & set out to make my professional life hell. Unfortunately she was also my line manager. Never praised pieces of work, heaped a load more on me and then sat in a handover meeting with the Snr manager (her boss) and when asked if she knew about all my pieces of work said “Nope. News to me.”

Just for context, everyone else I’ve ever worked with professionally has been great and I’ve never had any issues like this before. But she made me so uncomfortable and unsafe in her company that I handed my notice in - after trying to amicably address it directly through her and subsequently her manager when my attempts failed.

I sometimes feel angry that I’ve had to walk away from a steady job because of this toxic management culture. And then I think perhaps I did what was necessary in order to dodge a bullet. Maybe it was a wise move. I was struggling to eat, struggling to sleep, struggling to be present with my family. And physically, I felt very ill as well as mentally. But because of the ok salary I have moments where I wonder if I did the right thing.

Has anyone else done similar and not regretted it?

I think I’d have raised a grievance against her, but appreciate you may not have wanted to do so. I hope you’ve found a better role elsewhere.

StickyProblem · 04/10/2026 17:52

Your thoughts right now are just part of recovering from your awful experience. It’s a shame that nobody else stuck up for you even though you said they were fine and she was the only toxic one.
Take time to recover. You did the right thing. All the best.

Thepeopleversuswork · 04/10/2026 17:52

I’m in a similarly toxic job now (sounds remarkably similar tbh). I can’t leave at the moment because I’m the breadwinner in my family and I have huge outgoings. I would (and will) be out of the door so fast my feet won’t touch the ground if I could.

If you have the means to leave do it and don’t have a minute of regret. I’m really envious.

Are you working now?

Tinnybinnylinny · 04/10/2026 17:54

While I walked away, I did so with a very big package. I was very straightforward that I wouldn’t hesitate to take it to the end and that it was up to them if they wanted it public or not.

I am however in the privileged position of being able to do that. It still burns, as I loved the job and effectively they got away with it.

The only regret I have is that I didn’t do it sooner. It’s not worth what it can do to your health.

I hope you heal from this toxic situation and that the next role you move to you get a decent manager.

good luck!

Thank you to all who have replied and may have gone or are going through similar. I just reached a point where the band snapped. Something just switched in my mind and that resignation email wrote itself. Even though financially, things might look different for a while, I do not think we can put a price on our wellbeing. You have not get one life. To give someone that amount of destructive power over you seems……madness

You are unreasonable for not going sick and at the most inconvenient time for her and using the time off to secure a new job. And then telling her exactly what she needs to hear on your way out.

Crushed23 · 04/10/2026 18:36

I would love to do this in my current, very toxic job, but I’m on a work visa so quitting effectively means getting deported.

May I ask, @Nobodyiswatching , if you managed to find another job before you quit? Did you do any financial planning ahead of losing one income? I’m the breadwinner, so feel trapped in high-stress, high-paying jobs that destroy my health. 😔

Nimblethimble · 04/10/2026 18:38

I raised a grievance, fought everything and luckily they finally left. I'm back to being happy at work and not micro managed.

It did take a huge toll though. I wish nothing but pain and suffering for them now!

Nobodyiswatching · 04/10/2026 18:39

I resigned without another job lined up.

I have 3 months’ savings and a little thing I do on the side which earns me maybe a quarter of what I was on

OP posts:
Nobodyiswatching · 04/10/2026 18:44

@Nimblethimble I sometimes wish I’d had the courage to raise a grievance. At the time I just hit the eject button because my nervous system was screaming at me to get outta there. I don’t regret it actually. The issue is, toxic managers are not going to change. They get worse over time and the longer you stay chained to them. And eventually they will break you. So to preserve yourself and protect yourself you do need to remove yourself if you can

Leaving before the situations breaks you, so you’ve enough self esteem to deal with the job hunt isn’t a bad thing.
Best of luck!

Agreed. If they hadn't left I would not still be there.

prinkleman · 04/10/2026 18:51

I did this years ago but luckily I had another job to go to. I left three months early so lost that salary but it was worth it for my sanity. The person who took the role after me did end up putting in a complaint. I don’t know what the outcome was but it really helped me see that they were the issue not me.

HavingABlether · 04/10/2026 18:54

You did the right thing. I did it once and have never regretted it. Your mental health and self-worth are so much more valuable. I hope you get out and find somewhere you thrive.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 04/10/2026 19:04

I crashed out of teaching because of this, and the ridiculous workload. I didn't have a job to go to, but I don't regret it for a minute. The only thing that I worried about was the home lives of some of the children in my class! (Some had been taken into Care and one was going through the adoption process, so I hope that it worked out well for her, as she was a wonderful little girl).

I am now considering doing it again. I like, and get on with, everyone else at work apart from the manager and his favourite. The favourite can do no wrong; in fact, he gets all kinds of excuses made up for him. They completely ruin the job for the rest of us.

RachelGreep87 · 04/10/2026 19:14

YABU and reckless for leaving a job without another one lined up.

Timeforanothernamechange3 · 04/10/2026 19:21

I would never leave a job without another one to go to. It depends on your field though, I guess.

UndoRedo · 04/10/2026 19:22

I managed to get offered a deal to leave as my toxic manager didn't like me so much the company turned it into a redundancy situation. Took two months off and working now in a job for less money but I am enjoying the non toxic environment

Cadeaukatze · 04/10/2026 19:29

Yes I had a boss like that. Eventually she found a molehill to make into a mountain and reported me to HR and they said there would be an investigation.

I could have raised a grievance in return but they paid me off and I got about six months' gross salary.

My DH and others said for years, make them get rid of you, don't give her the satisfaction of leaving first. It was annoying I eventually gave her some ammunition but when someone dissects every aspect of your work you can't stay perfect. And like you, her manager wouldn't do anything to deal with her excesses.

You are definitely better out of it OP. It annoys me I lost a well paid job too but eventually I found a better one.

It also depends how hellish someone makes your life. I have been at the point where I was crying every time I had to go into the office as my life was made so miserable. That one manager impacted my physical and mental health - I ended up on antidepressants, with bad anxiety, not sleeping and shell of myself. Sometimes you just have to walk away.
