Alcohol at primary school discos…….

I have no idea but apparently there will be alcohol licensed bar at my child’s school disco ……… I’m in utter shock!

I'm on my school PTA. Most events where parents attend have a bar, including the disco. Whenever we've not had it, we've had many many complaints from parents. Personally I don't see why adults can't go an hour without booze but it seems the majority want it.

Never heard of that before. Though parents don't stay for our school discos as not enough room in the hall.

We don't have it at the school discos but every year we have a big summer BBQ which goes on until 10 and makes a ton of money for the parents association, principally through bar sales. It's usually a 'lively' evening, especially if the weather is good. The parents stand around chatting over wine and beer and the kids run riot eating sweets and running around the playground. Good times.

My dc are adults now but IME there was always mulled wine at the Christmas bazaar and pimms at the summer fete, so I don’t see a bar at the disco as being much different. It will help raise money, but if it’s unpopular then it won’t happen next time.

This is normal IME at the events that parents stay for. Obviously not if it's only the kids!

I used to help out with discos when my kids were at school but this would have made supervising multiple kids much more fun (obviously I’m kidding 😉)

As long as it's not for the kids? Of course it's " a thing", what's the problem?

We have mulled wine and prosecco at shows, nativities, bake sales etc
We have all the above and beer for school fairs.

It helps raise funds for the PTA. Unless they force you to drink, what's wrong with it?

Yup, ours always had a bar. Parents have to wait on the premises, and would be in the designated ‘bar’ area while the kids danced on the main hall.
If I’m giving up 2 hrs on a Friday night forced to chat to a load of parents I want a beer! Used to make a fortune for the PTFA even at £2.50 a glass or bottle of beer.

It isn't a night out, it is a kids disco can't you cope without a beer ?

We also have a bar at the summer and Xmas fairs, the film night etc basically anywhere the parents are going to be hanging around rather than watching a show.
In the secondary there IS a bar during shows because there’s usually an interval.
Have never seen drunk or out of control parents at any events over the last 15 years.
My USA in laws are appalled! No alcohol at their school event, but half the adults are medicated to the eyeballs with one thing or another so maybe they don’t need booze…

It every much IS a night out for many parents with young children. And one that doesn’t require paying a fortune for a babysitter either.

I didn't know that was a thing. However I suspect it is profitable way to make money for the school. Buy some beer/wine etc on offer in the Supermarket and sell it for a decent mark up.

I wish ours allowed us to just leave the kids and go! Unfortunately they m never did. A parent always had to stay, and totally separate to the kids as well so they’d be off in a hall somewhere and we’d be corralled in a section of the playground or some classrooms waiting for 2 hrs.

I'm just imagining the absolute carnage this wpuld cause if they did it at my children's school 😆

Being in shock is a bit much. It’s an evening event, parents are expected to hang around, they’re doing it legally with a license and it’ll raise some funds. No big deal. Don’t partake if you’re driving and/or don’t fancy it.

Every event at my children’s state primary school had a bar. It’s a great way to make money for PTA.

At DD’s independent secondary we have a free bar at every single event. Even parents evening.

One particularly lucrative summer fair Pimms stall bought several new giant interactive screens for the infant’s classes one year!

Parents don’t attend the discos at my DC’s school, nor did they at mine. Really weird to have them there frankly.

Bars are the most profitable bit of PTA fundraising. Easy to organise, great margins and popular!

Nobody is expecting parents to get roaring drunk during a 2 hour disco.
