Alcohol at primary school discos…….

Is this a thing these days? For parents obvs 🤣

I imagine this varies depending on the area/ demographic of the school. This wouldn’t have been a thing at DC’s school because there were a high number of religious families for whom alcohol wouldn’t be consumed. Also there wasn’t much PTA activity for various reasons.

But from going to other schools, including nieces and nephews, alcohol seems to feature in summer and Christmas fayres etc, so perhaps the school disco is no different

‘can't you cope without a beer ?’ obviously the answer is yes, but given there’s a bar it was never an issue…

Hmmm - in some ways I can understand people's objections; alcohol does find its way into everything and I am not sure that's a good thing (I say that as someone who loves a drink but acknowledges my life is better when I lay off it). However, I don't see it's any different to parents taking their kids to the pub and letting them play in the garden while they have a drink. Or alcohol being served to the adults at a kids birthday party. Obviously it would be inappropriate for anyone to get pissed but in the context of our society which is quite alcohol orientated, I don't think it's odd of surprising.

That would be the dream! None of us WANT to stay. It’s the school who make a parent stay onsite. Fucking irritating as we literally live about 200 metres from the school gates.

We have alcohol at school sports day. It's a lovely day.

I’d expect a glass of wine to be served at an evening Christmas concert or at certain family weekend event such as a Christmas Fete with mulled wine etc. I don’t know the dynamics of a school disco but I guess if it’s a parent social I’d expect to see it.

A few of the schools near here have it at sports day and weekday afternoon picnics with the children. This annoys me more, as I think it normalises that all social events need to revolve around alcohol.

My sons school did this twice a year. Basically parents had a few drinks, the kid's ate sweets & ran around. I used to love it, no one got drunk as it was only for a couple of hour's & the PTA made a lot of money.

I’ve never heard of parents at a primary school disco, we dropped them off 10 years ago and collected 2 hours later except those who were helping out (as my dd is autistic I would usually volunteer to help because she didn’t cope well but still wanted to go)

Our local village school used to do this. Everyone lives in the village so walked and it made lots of money for the pta. No one is getting blotto, just having a small glass of wine while waiting for their dc to enjoy an hour of sweets, squash and dancing.

we also did have Pimm’s and larger at our summer fete but again, no one got drunk.

The previous school had a summer music festival, now that was a boozy affair, pretty sure children’s social services wouldn’t have been impressed, that was in an affluent village and most the village turned out for it, but crucially walking distance

Yes this sounds a bit like DDs primary. There was always a bar at the summer BBQ and mulled wine at the Christmas fair.

Don't know why OP is in shock. Unless any of the parents get blotto why do you have a problem with it?

our school has no alcohol on the premises as a rule, the majority of parents would just have 1 glass of wine or whatever but there’s always one who goes too far and this just cuts that out!

I think the reverse. Primary school discos would be a hell of a lot more bearable after a couple of glasses of wine.

Of course they can but they dont want to for the reasons they stated.
If you have to give up a night to PTA crap and standing about chatting to a bunch of random parents then yes a drink is very much welcome!

Why are there even parents there, unless volunteering to run it with teachers…. In which case it’s a safeguarding issue to be on the piss when you’re helping to take care of the kids at a disco…..

They might be more bearable but I don’t think that a good image to give children - the adults need to drink , especially around you.

having seen how children imitate your behaviour more than anything else - avoid alcohol in front of them.

I’ve never seen a parent drunk at any of the events. Our school requires an adult to be on the premises in case their kid needs them and to make sure they are escorted home.
Would MUCH prefer not to be there but that’s not the way it works, though you can supervise another kid as well as your own…

Any schools I've worked in did not allow consumption of alcohol on the premises. Teachers couldn't even have a glass of wine with their end of term buffet

If your immediate reaction to bona fide fundraising for your children's school is righteous indignation, don't have a drink and just hand over a fiver direct to the PTA.

If you like the opportunity to drink beer for charity catch up with fellow parents over a drink while your DCs are bopping away to Walk the Moon in the assembly hall, then join in.

Better to insist that parents supervise instead of forcing teachers and support staff to do it.

It was common when mine were in primary school, and made a fair amount of money for th PTA.

All those parents on the rota for 30 minutes shifts at the school disco would go get a glass of wine when they were done. Summer fair included a BBQ and beer/Pimm's stall and Christmas fair had mulled wine.
