Alcohol at primary school discos…….

Is this a thing these days? For parents obvs 🤣

Why would parents want to be at a primary school disco? Quite frankly, I'm hard pushed to think of anything I would enjoy less.

my local schools don't even make it an option (and rightly so).

The school won't accept for teachers to do it. Either there are enough volunteer parents, or there's no event. Fair enough.

Volunteer AND raise money for the PTA by buying a glass of something. Win win!

I dont' think any parent want to do anything, disco, soft plays, birthday parties... even football matches in the pissing rain.

You just do. You have kids, they need a fun life. You suffer in silence because you like when they're happy, and a bit of mulled wine help ease the pain 😂

Our primary school disco lasts an hour, and the school is a 25 minute walk from where we live. If I wasn't loitering around the school the only realistic option to kill that hour would be the pub, and frankly I'd rather the profit went to the PTA than Greene King.

That's a terrible idea. I can perhaps see it at a private school where they often have wine out at parents' events?

Yes, in my experience, they are very boozy. All our school events are (ordinary state school). I don’t drink and I always find it a bit shocking. Two Christmases ago at the school Christmas disco, I had to help someone figure out what her tab was because she was drunk, the parents running the bar were drunk and no one could do the sums! I was the only sober person there to work it out for them. 🙄

It's common in all the state schools around here, why should only private school parents be the only ones allowed to have fun?

We do this at our school - we make more on the bar than any other stall.

Our primary school has never served alcohol at any of their events. I can't see that changing anytime soon either,

At our kids' primary school we always had mulled wine at the Xmas Fair and a pay bar at the Summer Fair. I was on the PTA and we raised a lot of money heating Sainsburys mulled wine in a tea urn and selling it in tiny cups for a reasonable mark up. We subsidised a lot of very lovely educational activities with the profits from those school fairs.

Astonishingly, we all managed to behave appropriately despite being the sort of parents who send their children to state schools.

We are quite a boozy school, we have quiz and bingo and comedy nights with licensed bars and sell alcohol at fairs etc. The disco organiser tried to set up a bar a couple of years ago and all hell broke loose. I had a parent on the phone to me (PTA treasurer) sobbing begging me to stop it as the disco was starting - they had ethical problems with parents drinking whilst on site at a kids event where the teachers and parent helpers were responsible for them. Multiple WhatsApps and escalation to the head from various parents who were aghast. Turns out the disco organiser didn’t actually get a licence, the parent helpers who were supposed to be watching the kids were drinking in the year 6 hall where the bar was and alcohol cans, bottles and fag butts were littered over the ground and found in the morning.

It’s been a big no ever since!

I'm guessing the average state school doesn't have a wine budget. Private schools bring it out by the bottle with the school logo on the label.

I think you've misunderstood my post.

No parents were allowed at PTA discos when I was on the PTA. 200 wild kids charging round in the dark was enough of a nightmare. We always had injuries from overexcited kids, would dread to think what chaos adults would have brought.
PTA and staff often met in the pub afterwards though!

Quite possibly because on the face of it, it suggests that alcohol is fine at indy schools but not state ones.

Blimey we also had cheese and wine at parents nights and all school shows, private school admittedly. Where ever parents had to hang around of an evening wine was available. No one got drunk. It was a polite convo and glass of wine vibe. Or a soft drink for those who prefered. I can’t see the issue

I think it would be a bad idea anywhere! In my experience though there is more alcohol available at private schools.

Our school events always have a bar, it makes the most money for our PTA.

People mainly just have a couple, haven't seen any outrageously drunken behaviour!

Well if didn’t have rhe logo on the label. It was decent wine, I think there would be some screwed up faces if that happened,

I am shocked that parents are invited/expected/allowed to attend a primary school disco. No Primary school that I ever worked in had parents involved in the Disco.

All evening events at my kids primary school 20 years ago had a bar for parents. The warm wine makes the evening do much less painful especially if its a talent show😂
I never saw anyone drunk.

Our primary school had a bar at the school fayre so I suppose it’s fairly similar. The parents were all very lovely though and no one over indulged. How wise this is probably depends on the school!
