Orgasm headache - A&E?!

Sorry for the TMI but I'll get it over with quickly.

90 mins or so ago my Saturday morning lie in ended in the way it often does, with a masturbation induced orgasm.

immediately afterwards,.for the first time in my life, a thunderclap headache.

I have read about these before (including on here). I now feel fine, and have since got up, had some toast, had a shower etc. exactly as normal. But I have googled it and it said that if it's the first time I should go to A&E immediately! This seems to go against the advice on here, and I feel absolutely fine now as if nothing happened.

I really don't want to spend the day in a&e but I also really don't want to die! AIBU to ignore Dr Google (who also told me I had skin cancer when I was actually just wearing the wrong clothes in hot weather) or do I really need to have the world's most embarrassing trip to a&e?

Friends who were A and E nurses said that what they could never understand when embarrassed men arrived with the hose of a vacuum cleaner stuck on their penis (a fairly regular occurrence apparently) having "slipped while hoovering naked" was why they always brought the whole hoover, instead of detaching the hose and just bringing the stuck bit . ...

Weekly is “pushing it” 2x per week he says is ‘safe’ but I think he just enjoys the excuse - I’m not complaining. 🤣

God, people are weird

Actually, thunderclap headaches are very extreme but do not last more than a few minutes (3-5). I have also had ice pick headaches but luckily, never a thunderclap one. I also hope I never have one. Ice pick headaches are bad enough, they make me feel as if Edward Scissorhands has been stabbing my skull.

When I had a brain haemorrhage it was a milisecond of intense pain, i was sick and then felt completely back to normal. After a few hours, i felt a bit fluey and had to lie down in a darkened room. I would never in a million years have thought that I had had a brain haemorrhage. I just felt a bit off.

Nothing wrong with Masterbation at all, but I would have been tempted to say I had been shagging some handsome Italian man all night…

I did think I might say something like that too if it ever happened to me, but then what would it say about him (or you!) that he didn’t think enough of you to accompany to A&E? I think I’d rather just say I was alone!😂

I'm out! I'm alive. Everything is fine. No need to panic. It wasn't a brain haemorrhage or anything that requires me to worry. Just got to keep a watch and go to my GP if it ever happens again like it did today. They don't think it was a thunderclap headache in the way that would concern them, and a scan confirmed that my brain is fine! Not the Saturday I had planned but at least I will live to see Sunday!

Also I'm sure I read a post on here a few weeks ago of something similar and the cause was some kind of electric shock caused by a mains powered vibrator so perhaps you should get yours looked at or replaced

What exactly is a thunderclap headache and why is it different to a normal one ?

This happened to my husband late one night contacted GP next morning they sent him straight to a&e he had blood tests, scans and they insisted on lumbar puncture because he waited past 6 hours to attend bleeds can be missed on CT scans the doctor said Thsbkfully all clear and he’s been ok since

Nothing embarrassing in talking about the orgasm - it’s a perfectly natural and normal bodily function. I would call 111 and mention everything for context. (Sorry just read to the end of the thread, glad all is well for you in the end).

A thunderclap headache due to a serious medical issue wouldn't go away on it's own, without medical treatment. You have showered, had breakfast and feel fine, don't worry.

Yes it would. Thunderclap headaches can be a sudden warning sign of life-threatening emergencies involving bleeding, tears, or blocked blood vessels inside the brain. They can also be a sign of imminent stroke or dangerously spiked blood pressure and can reach maximum intensity in less than 60 seconds and dissipate in a couple of minutes. You can’t tell the difference between a life threatening event and a harmless headache just by how the pain feels or that the pain only lasted a short time. The advice is always to treat it as a medical emergency, and either call 999 or go to A&E.

I had one of these, freaking terrifying. Like someone whacked me round the back of the head with a cricket bat. Mortifying having to describe the “post coital” headache in detail to the docs in A&E, but had a CT scan & then a lumbar puncture to rule out a haemorrhage. Worst of it was when my parents turned up at the moment the doctor was going thru the findings… I now suffer with persistent headaches & take daily migraine medication for them. And hardest part is that my orgasms are now no way near as strong as they used to be. Sigh

I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree. For every person on here with genuine medical knowledge you have myriad others who can’t spell Wednesday reliably and believe viruses can be treated with antibiotics.

The general population is woefully ill-informed about any specific topic, especially medical ones - everyone knows somebody who knows somebody who had a weird, tenuously-related incident with various outcomes - and sifting out comments with any credibility is a game of luck.

A thunderclap headache can be indicative of a bleed in the brain or even an aneurysm.

Why don't you think that's an emergency?
