Worry about DD at uni who just called

DD just started uni at Bristol. She just called but I only heard a noise and that was it. I am worried. Calling back but not answering

It’s very likely a pocket dial. I did the same in 2007 to my mum during a “freshers week booster” everyone was being encouraged to sign up to different clubs and stuff, I was taken out by the drama society and accidentally sat on my phone. My mum heard a muffled over-dramatic “help me” (we happened to be looking at a script for something). I didn’t know Id rang her until 8am the next day when my dad was on the intercom demanding to be let in and wanting to know where I was. Terrifying for them back home, but we laugh about it now.
Leave her for tonight - if you can, I understand you’re anxious and might not get much sleep - but bear in mind when she gets her phone out/charges it or whatever, she will see you have tired to call (and text?!) and will hopefully respond then, but it might not be until 2/3am. Try to think positive: she’s having a lovely experience with new friends and having fun!!

I can imagine your parents concern. I also heard like a scream and then off. Maybe is all on my paranoid imagination.

I shall go to sleep and think positive thoughts

Thank you

Thank you; yes, probably a pocket dial; would be good if she answers though; messages are not getting through so perhaps not reception.

I did call the university and they told me to keep trying her. And call in an hour if not reply

Oh no! Please, you didn't?

maybefour · Today 00:30

That’s a big positive. The fact she has called you & wanted you to be involved/aware about what’s going on is a great thing. She sounds like a very aware girl with a great relationship with her parent, it’s difficult to adjust but it’s the next step, and big congrats your girl is off to uni! You must be so proud!

CherryBlossom321 · Today 00:31

This would concern me too. There is nothing wrong with ensuring her safety, OP.

Aydel · Today 00:31

Not OTT to call the uni. A friend of mine had a similar call from her DD late at night, some mumbling and cut off. She just felt that something wasn’t right, called the halls, they went into her DD’s room - she had fallen off her bed and was having a fit. They called an ambulance and then called my friend back. DD fine now and had never had a fit before.

RumPidgeon · Today 00:32

Did you ring the uni again OP? I’d be worried about the dead phone but hope it’s nothing and just a pocket dial.

Lastpushtothesummit · Today 00:39

OMG. leave the poor girl alone to enjoy freshers week. It was better at uni in the days before mobiles and SM when our parents didn’t know what we got up to and they had a weekly phone call if there was time.

LadyWhistledownsSocietyPapers · Today 00:43

I'd rather my child be embarrassed for 5 minutes than something had happened and I did nothing.

All these 'well, I was fine' posts don't account for the ones who weren't.

Most likely explanation is pocket dial then losing signal in a club, but you're allowed to feel worried and act on it. It's the first time, not as if you're calling uni every day if she doesn't answer.

Worldinyourhands · Today 00:46

I'd call the university back or even go there tbh. A scream and then cut off? And phone dead since? I'd be concerned (I'm sure it's fine but I would).

Enuffnowtbh · Today 00:49

My children regularly pocket dialled at Uni . Just relax and let your child enjoy their freedom! It’s really hard as a Mum ,I really understand 🌸

Fortunateporcupine · Today 01:04

Op it looks to me that last night 16th (so now) there are some big welcome events for students in Bristol , starting late and ending at 3am. A d&b rave, a boat party, etc. They’ll probably all have bad reception , she may have called on entry and realised the signal is poor as it so often is in these venues. It looks like a very busy evening in Bristol with some big events and nightlife so there’ll be loads of people around.

Fortunateporcupine · Today 01:12

Btw these are events included in some sort of student wristband welcome thing not just random events across the city . Hope you get some rest and manage to get in touch soon 😊

Last location at Beacon House

OK so Google maps tells me this is a University of Bristol building. I wouldn’t be concerned re: the last location.

She will more than likely be at a flat party or in some club. There are always things going off every night during freshers week. And new students can become wrapped up in the excitement of it all and totally forget to contact parents because they’re so busy getting to know new people.

Try her again tomorrow. x

PollyBell · Today 01:35

I would assume it was an accident

Dahliasarebeautiful · Today 02:27

My friends daughter just started at Bristol, moved into halls on Sunday. If you want me to ask her to see if her daughter knows yours just drop me a DM. Appreciate it's unlikely but she might, on the off chance

NerrSnerr · Today 02:34

At 2.30am? By the time you’ve found out the OP’s daughter will have been in touch.

StolenTeapots · Today 02:52

Yanbu. I'd worry too until confirm all ok.

SquirrelsAreGo · Today 03:00

I would find this worrying but as an outsider, my thought was that, if she's in trouble, she wouldn't call you would she? She's call the police or similar?

So, although I'd be pacing the floor all night, in reality it seems very unlikely that she would've called because she was in a dodgy situation. Therefore, a pocket dial.

Look forward to hearing she's ok.

cityliving99 · Today 03:03

Freshers week!
And she has accidentally called…

Timeforachange26 · Yesterday 23:39

Maybe it's a pocket call and she's somewhere noisy

That seems very likely.

Raisingresiliantteens · Today 04:22

I went to sleep. Just woke up to check. She finally replied at 2am to my message that it was an error/pocket call,

Thanks everyone. I need to control my paranoid mind. Didn’t call university thanks GOD, DH is more reasonable and less paranoid and said she was fine and went to sleep

back to bed now.

I don’t mean to be unkind here and honestly I do understand the concern for your daughter, I’d feel the same but I really don’t understand why you’d want to post on here - it’s the last thing I’d think of doing in the same situation

Glad all worked out okay though

Yes but what are you anxious about. It’s a pocket dial. Have you never had one before?

I can’t believe you called the university after a pocket dial. How embarrassing for you. Whatever you do, don’t let your daughter you did that.

Edited

This.

AtlasPine · Today 05:31

This whole new level of being able to monitor young people in the family is bound to lead to more anxiety. I can see how it could reassure on one level, to have the means to know where your young adult is all the time but also create a culture of an unhealthy accountability 24/7 long after leaving home.

I'm guessing because the OP was worried about her dd, wasn't sure what to do, felt a bit helpless and panicky and was seeking support, understanding and reassurance from fellow mothers.
